DIY Banana Backpack | Make Thrift Buy #9

  • 0:03 - 0:09
Welcome back to make thrift buy, a show where you guys send me cool clothes and accessories from the internet and I try my best to recreate them.
  • 0:09 - 0:14
Today's suggestion was sent in by Vatoyyo, who sent me a link to this banana backpack.
  • 0:14 - 0:23
Now, I found this same item all over different store envy shops, so it does seem to be a cheap, mass-produced design and it's also something you could totally make for yourself.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
So I've been keeping an eye out for plain backpacks,
  • 0:25 - 0:29
at market stalls and thrift stores and I found this one the other day.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
I thought it looked pretty similar so now I'm going to begin.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
The first thing I did was to work out a good banana design on a piece of paper
  • 0:35 - 0:37
before trying it out on the bag itself.
  • 0:37 - 0:42
Next I mixed up some yellow and white acrylic paint to make a good banana colour
  • 0:42 - 0:45
and added some fabric medium to help the design stay permanent on the fabric.
  • 0:45 - 0:51
This isn't really needed if you're not going to be washing your backpack much but seeing as I had some lying around, I thought 'why not?'
  • 0:51 - 0:57
Then I laid the backpack flat and put a plastic bag inside to stop the paint from transferring through to the opposite side.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
Then I started painting banana shapes on to my bag.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
The first thing I did was to cover up this quite prominent stain with this strategically placed banana.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Then I continued painting on bananas in a random fashion.
  • 1:07 - 1:15
Now, you can wait for your paint to dry naturally or you can get impatient like me and speed up the process with a hairdryer.
  • 1:16 - 1:21
Once I had covered my backpack with bananas , I ironed over them to set them into the fabric.
  • 1:21 - 1:27
Then, using a permanent black marker, I drew a couple of simple lines over the top of the paint to finish off the design
  • 1:27 - 1:29
and I repeated this for all of the bananas.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
Way too easy to make and I've given a new life to this old, stained backpack.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
If you have any suggestions for things for me to try out
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    then leave a comment below.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
Thank you all so much for watching and I will see you guys in the next episode.
