Why carrying works

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Now, let's do the exact
    same addition problem
  • 0:03 - 0:04
that we did in the last video.
  • 0:04 - 0:06
But I'm going to expand out
these numbers so that we really
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    understand what's
    going on when we're
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    doing all of this carrying.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    So this 5 is in
    the hundreds place.
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    So it really represents
    5 hundreds or 500.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    3 represents 3 tens because
it is in the tens place.
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    So it represents 30.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
And the 6, well, it just
    represents 6 ones or 6.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    Likewise, this 3 represents 300.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    This 9 is 9 tens or 90.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    And this 8 just
    represents 8 ones or 8.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
And now we can add these two up.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    Now let's start in the
    right-most column-- this ones
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    column.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    6 plus 8, we've
    already figured out,
  • 0:45 - 0:49
is equal to 14, which is
the same thing as 10 plus 4.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    So let's write the
    part that's not
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    a multiple of 10 in
    this ones column.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
So let's put that 4 there.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    And the part that
    is a multiple of 10,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    we can now carry into
    this tens column.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
And that's just to keep track
of it-- just to make sure
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    that we don't lose
    that 10, we're
  • 1:07 - 1:08
putting it into the tens column.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
Now we can add all the tens.
  • 1:10 - 1:15
    10 plus 30 plus 90, we've
    already figured out is 130.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    Well the part that is
    not a multiple of 100,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
we can write in this tens
    column-- so the 30 part.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    And then the part that
    is a multiple of 100,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    we can put in the
    hundreds column.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    So we could put the
    100 right over here.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    Notice, we've just
    carried the 1.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    But essentially, we've carried
    100, because we put a 1
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    in the hundreds place.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    10 plus 30 plus
    90 is 100 plus 30.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
This is equal to 100 plus 30.
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    That's all we've done.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
Now we can add the hundreds.
  • 1:44 - 1:49
    100 plus 500 plus 300 we've
    already figured out is 900.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
So we can write it as 900.
  • 1:52 - 1:52
    And we're done!
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    We've figured out that
    500 plus 30 plus 6,
  • 1:55 - 2:02
    plus 300 plus 90 plus 8, is
    equal to 900 plus 30 plus 4,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
which is the same thing as 934.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    So hopefully this gives
you a little bit more sense
  • 2:07 - 2:10
of what we're doing when we
    "carry the 1" every time.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    6 plus 8 is 14.
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    We carried the 1.
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    That 1 represents 10.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    It represents this
    10 right over here.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    Just so we don't
    lose track of it.
  • 2:17 - 2:23
Then we say that 10 plus
    30 plus 90 is equal to 130.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    So that's 30 plus 100.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    Then we add the hundreds
    together and we get 900.
