Why I protest for climate justice

  • Not Synced
    Pat Mitchell: It's so great
    to see you, my friend.
  • Not Synced
    Jane Fonda: Hi Pat.
It's great to be with you.
  • Not Synced
PM: Jane, for the ones who may not
    have seen the extraordinary coverage
  • Not Synced
around the world of Fire Drill Fridays
  • Not Synced
and the impact that they have already had,
  • Not Synced
talk to us about the origin of this idea,
  • Not Synced
    this particular response
    to the climate crisis.
  • Not Synced
JF: I was very inspired by Greta Thunberg,
  • Not Synced
    the Swedish student,
  • Not Synced
and by the young school climate strikers.
  • Not Synced
Greta says, we've got to get
    out of our comfort zone.
  • Not Synced
We have to behave like our house
    is burning, because it is.
  • Not Synced
And so she really struck a chord in me,
  • Not Synced
and then, learning that just about
  • Not Synced
    a hundred percent
    of climate scientists agree,
  • Not Synced
    they agree that a drastic
    emergency is upon us,
  • Not Synced
    that it is human-caused.
  • Not Synced
    But they said,
  • Not Synced
we can do something about it.
  • Not Synced
We have the time, the technology,
  • Not Synced
    the tools.
  • Not Synced
    We have everything we need
    except political will
  • Not Synced
    to meet the challenge,
    and it's an enormous challenge.
  • Not Synced
We have 11 years, many say, a decade,
  • Not Synced
    and I thought,
  • Not Synced
    Oh I'm so lucky
  • Not Synced
that I am healthy and living
  • Not Synced
in a decade where we who are alive
  • Not Synced
    can actually make the difference.
  • Not Synced
    We can make the difference
  • Not Synced
    as to whether there's going
to be a livable future or not.
  • Not Synced
What a glorious responsibility we have.
  • Not Synced
We have to step up to the plate,
  • Not Synced
    and when you're famous,
  • Not Synced
there's a lot of things that you can do.
  • Not Synced
    You have a bigger platform.
  • Not Synced
So I decided that, like Greta,
  • Not Synced
I was going to put my body on the line
  • Not Synced
    and move to the center
    of American power, Washington, DC,
  • Not Synced
and have a rally every Friday
    like the students do,
  • Not Synced
and we work with the students.
  • Not Synced
    They speak at my rallies
and I speak at their rallies,
  • Not Synced
    and that after we speak,
  • Not Synced
    we engage in civil disobedience
  • Not Synced
    and risk getting arrested.
  • Not Synced
Civil disobedience is a powerful tool
  • Not Synced
that has changed history many times,
  • Not Synced
    both in the United States
  • Not Synced
    in the '60s during
    the Civil Rights Movement,
  • Not Synced
of course in India with Mahatma Gandhi,
  • Not Synced
and I didn't know in the beginning
if it was going to work or not,
  • Not Synced
but it's made me very happy
    to see what's happening.
  • Not Synced
PM: It's also led to your being arrested
  • Not Synced
    multiple times, actually,
  • Not Synced
spending at least a night or two
    in Washington, DC jails,
  • Not Synced
and while all of us I think recognize
    the emergency and the actions
  • Not Synced
    that you so kindly mentioned
    others have taken,
  • Not Synced
    I'm not sure that we
would put our bodies at risk,
  • Not Synced
    our lives, our careers,
  • Not Synced
    and our lives on hold
  • Not Synced
    as you have done.
  • Not Synced
    Do you have any concerns
    about that at this point?
