9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Pat Mitchell: It's so great[br]to see you, my friend. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Jane Fonda: Hi Pat.[br]It's great to be with you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 PM: Jane, for the ones who may not[br]have seen the extraordinary coverage 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 around the world of Fire Drill Fridays 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the impact that they have already had, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 talk to us about the origin of this idea, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this particular response[br]to the climate crisis. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: I was very inspired by Greta Thunberg, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the Swedish student, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and by the young school climate strikers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Greta says, we've got to get[br]out of our comfort zone. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have to behave like our house[br]is burning, because it is. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And so she really struck a chord in me, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then, learning that just about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a hundred percent[br]of climate scientists agree, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they agree that a drastic[br]emergency is upon us, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that it is human-caused. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But they said, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we can do something about it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have the time, the technology, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the tools. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have everything we need[br]except political will 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to meet the challenge,[br]and it's an enormous challenge. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have 11 years, many say, a decade, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I thought, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Oh I'm so lucky 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that I am healthy and living 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a decade where we who are alive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 can actually make the difference. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We can make the difference 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as to whether there's going[br]to be a livable future or not. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 What a glorious responsibility we have. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have to step up to the plate, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and when you're famous, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there's a lot of things that you can do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You have a bigger platform. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I decided that, like Greta, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was going to put my body on the line 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and move to the center[br]of American power, Washington, DC, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and have a rally every Friday[br]like the students do, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we work with the students. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They speak at my rallies[br]and I speak at their rallies, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that after we speak, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we engage in civil disobedience 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and risk getting arrested. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Civil disobedience is a powerful tool 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that has changed history many times, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 both in the United States 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the '60s during[br]the Civil Rights Movement, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of course in India with Mahatma Gandhi, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I didn't know in the beginning[br]if it was going to work or not, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but it's made me very happy[br]to see what's happening. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 PM: It's also led to your being arrested 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 multiple times, actually, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 spending at least a night or two[br]in Washington, DC jails, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and while all of us I think recognize[br]the emergency and the actions 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that you so kindly mentioned[br]others have taken, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm not sure that we[br]would put our bodies at risk, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 our lives, our careers, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and our lives on hold 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as you have done. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Do you have any concerns[br]about that at this point?
