You can grow new brain cells. Here's how

  • Not Synced
Can we, as adults, grow new nerve cells?
  • Not Synced
    There's still some confusion
    about that question,
  • Not Synced
as this is a fairly new field of research.
  • Not Synced
    For example, I was talking
to one of my colleagues, Robert --
  • Not Synced
    who is an oncologist --
  • Not Synced
    and he was telling me,
  • Not Synced
    "Sandrine, this is puzzling,
  • Not Synced
some of my patients that have been told
they are cured of their cancer,
  • Not Synced
    still develop symptoms of depression."
  • Not Synced
    And I responded to him,
  • Not Synced
"Well, from my point of view
    that makes sense.
  • Not Synced
The drug you give to your patients
that stops the cancer cells multiplying,
  • Not Synced
    also stops the newborn neurons
    being generated in their brain."
  • Not Synced
And then Robert looked at me
like I was crazy and said,
  • Not Synced
"But Sandrine, these are adult patients,
adults do not grow new nerve cells."
  • Not Synced
And much to his surprise, I said,
    "Well actually, we do."
  • Not Synced
    And this is a phenomenon
    that we call Neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    [Neurogenesis]
  • Not Synced
Now Robert is not a neuroscientist,
  • Not Synced
so when he went to medical school
he was not taught what we know now --
  • Not Synced
    that the adult brain
    can generate new nerve cells.
  • Not Synced
    So Robert --
  • Not Synced
    you know --
  • Not Synced
being a good doctor that he is,
  • Not Synced
wanted to come to my lab
to understand the topic a little better.
  • Not Synced
And I took him for a tour
  • Not Synced
of one the of most exciting
    parts of the brain
  • Not Synced
when it comes to Neurogenesis --
  • Not Synced
    and this is the Hippocampus.
  • Not Synced
So this is this gray structure
in the center of the brain.
  • Not Synced
And what we've known for what
    seems like already very long,
  • Not Synced
is that this is important for learning,
and memory and mood and emotion.
  • Not Synced
    However, what we
    have learned more recently,
  • Not Synced
is that this is one of the unique
    structures of the adult brain
  • Not Synced
where new neurons can be generated.
  • Not Synced
    And if we slide
    through the hippocampus,
  • Not Synced
    and zoom in,
  • Not Synced
what you actually see here in blue
  • Not Synced
    is a newborn neuron
    in an adult mouse brain.
  • Not Synced
So when it comes to the human brain,
  • Not Synced
    my colleague Dr. Jonas Frisén
    from the Karolinska Institute,
  • Not Synced
    has estimated that we produce
  • Not Synced
    700 new neurons per day
    in the hippocampus.
  • Not Synced
So you might think this is not much
  • Not Synced
    according to the billions
    of neurons we have,
  • Not Synced
but by the time we will turn 50,
  • Not Synced
we will have exchanged all the neurons
we were born with in that structure
  • Not Synced
    with adult-born neurons.
  • Not Synced
So, why are these neurons important
    and what are their functions?
  • Not Synced
So first, we know that they're important
    for learning and memory.
  • Not Synced
And in the lab we have shown
  • Not Synced
that if we block the ability
    of the adult brain
  • Not Synced
    to produce new neurons
    in the Hippocampus,
  • Not Synced
then we block certain memory abilities.
  • Not Synced
And this is especially new and true
    for spacial recognition --
  • Not Synced
    so like, how you navigate
    your way in the city.
  • Not Synced
So we are still learning a lot,
  • Not Synced
and we are not only important
    for memory capacity,
  • Not Synced
but also for the quality of the memory.
  • Not Synced
    And we will be helpful
to add time to our memory
  • Not Synced
    and we will help differentiate
    very similar memories.
  • Not Synced
Like, how do you find your bike
  • Not Synced
but you park at this station
    everyday in the same area
  • Not Synced
but in a slightly different position?
  • Not Synced
    And more interesting
    to my colleague Robert,
  • Not Synced
is the research we have been doing
    on Neurogenesis and Depression.
  • Not Synced
So in an animal model of depression,
  • Not Synced
    we see that we have
    a lower level of neurogenesis,
  • Not Synced
    and if we give antidepressants,
  • Not Synced
    then we increase the production
    of these newborn neurons,
  • Not Synced
    and we decrease
    the symptoms of depression,
  • Not Synced
    establishing a clear link
    between neurogenesis and depression.
  • Not Synced
    But moreover, if you
    just block neurogenesis,
  • Not Synced
    then you block the efficacy
    of the antidepressant.
  • Not Synced
So by then, Robert had understood
  • Not Synced
    that very likely his patients
    were suffering from depression
  • Not Synced
even after being cured of their cancer
  • Not Synced
because the cancer drug had stopped
the newborn neurons to be generated,
  • Not Synced
    And it will take time
  • Not Synced
    to generate new neurons
    that reach their normal functions.
  • Not Synced
    So, collectively, now,
  • Not Synced
we think we have enough evidence to say
that Neurogenesis is a target of choice
  • Not Synced
    if we want to improve
    memory information or mood,
  • Not Synced
    or even prevent their decline
    associated with aging,
  • Not Synced
    or associated with stress.
  • Not Synced
    So the next question is,
  • Not Synced
    can we control Neurogenesis?
  • Not Synced
    The answer is yes.
  • Not Synced
And we are now going to do a little quiz.
  • Not Synced
So I'm going to give you a set
    of behaviors and activities,
  • Not Synced
and you tell me if you think
    it will increase neurogenesis
  • Not Synced
or if it will decrease neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    Are we ready?
  • Not Synced
    Okay, let's go.
  • Not Synced
    So what about learning?
  • Not Synced
    Increasing?
  • Not Synced
    Yes.
  • Not Synced
    So learning will increase
the production of these new neurons.
  • Not Synced
    How about stress?
  • Not Synced
Yes, stress will decrease the production
of new neurons in the hippocampus.
  • Not Synced
    How about sleep deprivation?
  • Not Synced
    Indeed, it will decrease neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    How about sex?
  • Not Synced
    Oh wow!
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Yes, you are right, it will increase
    the production of new neurons.
  • Not Synced
However, it's all about balance here.
  • Not Synced
We don't want to fall in a situation
  • Not Synced
    about too much sex
    leading to sleep deprivation.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    So how about getting older?
  • Not Synced
    So Neurogenesis' rate
will decrease as we get older,
  • Not Synced
    but it is still occurring.
  • Not Synced
And then finally, how about running?
  • Not Synced
So, I will let you judge
    that one by yourself.
  • Not Synced
So this is one of the first studies
that was carried out by one of my mentors,
  • Not Synced
Prof. Rusty Gage for the Salk Institute,
  • Not Synced
    showing that the environment
    can have an impact
  • Not Synced
on the production of new neurons.
  • Not Synced
And here you see a section
of the hippocampus of a mouse
  • Not Synced
that had no running wheel in its cage.
  • Not Synced
And the little black dots you see
    are actually newborn neurons-to-be.
  • Not Synced
And now, you see a section
of the hippocampus of a mouse
  • Not Synced
that did have a running wheel in its cage.
  • Not Synced
So you see the massive increase
    in the black dots
  • Not Synced
    representing the new neurons-to-be.
  • Not Synced
    So activity impacts neurogenesis
    but that's not all.
  • Not Synced
What you eat will have an effect
  • Not Synced
on the production of new neurons
    in the hippocampus.
  • Not Synced
So here we have a sample of diet --
  • Not Synced
of nutrients that have been shown
    to have efficacy.
  • Not Synced
    And I'm just going
to point a few out for you.
  • Not Synced
    So calorie restriction of 20%-30%
    will increase neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    Intermittent fasting --
  • Not Synced
so spaces of time between your meal --
  • Not Synced
    will increase neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    Intake of Flavonoids,
  • Not Synced
    which are contained
    in dark chocolate or blueberries,
  • Not Synced
    will increase neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    Omega-3 fatty acids,
  • Not Synced
present in fatty fish, like salmon,
  • Not Synced
    will increase the production
    of these new neurons.
  • Not Synced
    Conversely, a diet rich
    in high saturated fat,
  • Not Synced
    will have a negative impact
    on neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    Ethanol --
  • Not Synced
    intake of alcohol --
  • Not Synced
    will decrease neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
However, not everything is lost --
  • Not Synced
    Resveratrol, which is
    contained in red wine,
  • Not Synced
    has been shown to promote
the survival of these new neurons.
  • Not Synced
So next time you are at a dinner party,
  • Not Synced
you might want to reach for this possibly
    "Neurogenesis-neutral" drink.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And then finally,
let me point out the last one --
  • Not Synced
    a quick one.
  • Not Synced
    So Japanese groups
    are fascinated with food textures,
  • Not Synced
and they have shown that actually
    soft diet impairs neurogenesis,
  • Not Synced
    as opposed to food
    that requires mastication --
  • Not Synced
    chewing, or crunchy food.
  • Not Synced
    So all of this data,
  • Not Synced
    where we need to look
    at the cellular level,
  • Not Synced
has been generated using animal models.
  • Not Synced
But this diet has also been given
    to human participants,
  • Not Synced
    and what we could see
  • Not Synced
is that the diet modulates memory and mood
in the same way it modulates neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    Such as, calorie restriction
    will improve memory capacity,
  • Not Synced
whereas a high-fat diet will exacerbate
    symptoms of depression --
  • Not Synced
as opposed to Omega-3 fatty acids,
    which increase neurogenesis,
  • Not Synced
    and also help to decrease
    the symptoms of depression.
  • Not Synced
So we think that the effect of diet
on mental health, on memory and mood,
  • Not Synced
is actually mediated by the production
of the new neurons in the hippocampus.
  • Not Synced
And it is not only what you eat,
  • Not Synced
    but it's also the texture
of the food when you eat it,
  • Not Synced
    and the amount you eat.
  • Not Synced
    On our side --
  • Not Synced
    neuroscientists interested
    in neurogenesis --
  • Not Synced
    we need to understand better
the function of these new neurons,
  • Not Synced
and how we can control their survival
    and their production.
  • Not Synced
We also need to find a way to protect
    the neurogenesis of Robert's patients.
  • Not Synced
    And on your side --
  • Not Synced
    I leave you in charge
    of your Neurogenesis.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Margaret Heffernan:
    Fantastic research, Sandrine!
  • Not Synced
Now, I told you you changed my life --
  • Not Synced
I now eat a lot of blueberries.
  • Not Synced
    I'm really interested
    in the running thing --
  • Not Synced
    Do I have to run?
  • Not Synced
Or is it really just about
  • Not Synced
    aerobic exercise
    getting oxygen to the brain?
  • Not Synced
Could it be any kind of vigorous exercise?
  • Not Synced
Sandrine Thuret: So for the moment,
  • Not Synced
    we can't really say
if it's just the running itself,
  • Not Synced
but we think that anything that indeed
    will increase the production --
  • Not Synced
of moving the blood flow to the brain --
  • Not Synced
    should be beneficial.
  • Not Synced
MH: Right, so I don't have
to get a running wheel in my office?
  • Not Synced
    ST: No, you don't!
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    MH: Oh, what a relief!
  • Not Synced
    Okay, that's wonderful.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you so much.
  • Not Synced
    ST: Thank you, thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
