[Voiceover:] We're creating a smarter, more sustainable Sydney.
  • 0:03 - 0:07
    [water running]
Water is one of our most valuable resources ,
  • 0:07 - 0:11
but we use drinking quality water for things that don't really need it
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    while storm water
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    [rain and thunder]
    and water from our showers,
  • 0:14 - 0:18
washing machines and basins goes down the drain
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    wasted.
    [pipe draining]
  • 0:19 - 0:23
That's why we're planning a decentralized water system.
  • 0:23 - 0:28
This includes a local, recycled water system alongside our current water network.
  • 0:28 - 0:33
This local water will be treated and then distributed using a separate purple pipe.
  • 0:33 - 0:39
It will be used for non-drinking purposes only like watering gardens and parks and flushing loos.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
By using treated and filtered recycled water,
  • 0:42 - 0:46
we could help supply the city of Sydney's non-drinking water needs
  • 0:46 - 0:50
leaving our drinking water for drinking.
    [water dripping]
  • 0:50 - 0:54
In 2010, Austin, Texas saved more than 7 billion litres of water [Yee-Haw]
  • 0:54 - 0:56
through the use of reclaimed water
  • 0:57 - 1:00
and Singapore has one of the largest water recycling plants in the world
  • 1:00 - 1:03
where it's an actual tourist attraction.
    [cameras clicking]
  • 1:04 -
Recycling water will help us preserve
    our precious drinking water

and by introducing innovations like rain
gardens in our parks and streets

    [rainforest sounds]
  • Not Synced
    we'll also reduce pollution
    going into our water ways,
  • Not Synced
adding to the water saving actions
    we're already doing.

    Creating a sustainable Sydney 2030;
a green, global and connected city.
