This is what enduring love looks like

  • Not Synced
Alec Soth: So about 10 years ago,
I got a call from a woman in Texas,
  • Not Synced
    Stacey Baker,
  • Not Synced
and she'd seen some of my photographs
    in an art exhibition
  • Not Synced
and was wondering if she could commission
me to take a portrait of her parents.
  • Not Synced
Now, at the time I hadn't met Stacey,
and I thought this was some sort of
  • Not Synced
wealthy oil tycoon and I'd struck it rich,
  • Not Synced
but it was only later that I found out
  • Not Synced
she'd actually taken out a loan
    to make this happen.
  • Not Synced
I took the picture of her parents,
  • Not Synced
but I was actually more excited
    about photographing Stacey.
  • Not Synced
The picture I made that day
    ended up becoming
  • Not Synced
one of my best known portraits.
  • Not Synced
At the time I made this picture,
Stacey was working as an attorney
  • Not Synced
    for the State of Texas.
  • Not Synced
Not long after, she left her job
    to study photography in Maine,
  • Not Synced
    and while she was there,
    she ended up meeting
  • Not Synced
    the Director of Photography
at the New York Times Magazine
  • Not Synced
and was actually offered a job.
  • Not Synced
Stacey Baker: In the years since,
    Alec and I have done
  • Not Synced
a number of magazine projects together,
  • Not Synced
    and we've become friends.
  • Not Synced
A few months ago, I started talking
to Alec about a fascination of mine.
  • Not Synced
    I've always been obsessed
    with how couples meet.
  • Not Synced
    I asked Alec how he
    and his wife Rachel met,
  • Not Synced
and he told me the story
of a high school football game
  • Not Synced
where she was 16 and he was 15,
  • Not Synced
    and he asked her out.
  • Not Synced
    He liked her purple hair.
  • Not Synced
She said yes, and that was it.
  • Not Synced
I then asked Alec if he'd be interested
    in doing a photography project
  • Not Synced
    exploring this question.
  • Not Synced
AS: And I was interested in the question,
but I was actually much more interested
  • Not Synced
in Stacey's motivation for asking it,
  • Not Synced
    particularly since I'd never known
    Stacey to have a boyfriend.
  • Not Synced
So as part of this project,
    I thought it'd be interesting
  • Not Synced
if she tried to meet someone.
  • Not Synced
So my idea was to have Stacey here
    go speed dating
  • Not Synced
in Las Vegas on Valentine's Day.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter) (Applause) (Music)
  • Not Synced
SB: We ended up at what was advertised
as the world's largest speed dating event.
  • Not Synced
    I had 19 dates
  • Not Synced
and each date lasted 3 minutes.
  • Not Synced
Participants were given a list of ice-
breaker questions to get the ball rolling,
  • Not Synced
things like, "If you could be any kind
of animal, what would you be?"
  • Not Synced
    That sort of thing.
  • Not Synced
    My first date was Colin.
  • Not Synced
    He's from England,
  • Not Synced
and he once married a woman he met
after placing an ad for a capricorn.
  • Not Synced
    Alec and I saw him
at the end of the evening,
  • Not Synced
and he said he'd kissed a woman in line
at one of the concession stands.
  • Not Synced
    Zack and Chris came
    to the dating fun together.
  • Not Synced
    This is Karl.
  • Not Synced
I asked Karl, "What's the first thing
    you notice about a woman?"
  • Not Synced
    He said, "Tits."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Matthew is attracted to women
    with muscular calves.
  • Not Synced
We talked about running. He does
    triathlons, I run half-marathons.
  • Not Synced
Alec actually liked his eyes and asked
if I was attracted to him, but I wasn't,
  • Not Synced
and I don't think he was
    attracted to me either.
  • Not Synced
    Austin and Mike came together.
  • Not Synced
Mike asked me a hypothetical question.
  • Not Synced
He said, "You're in an elevator
    running late for a meeting.
  • Not Synced
Someone makes a dash for the elevator.
  • Not Synced
Do you hold it open for them?"
  • Not Synced
And I said I would not.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Cliff said the first thing he notices
about a woman is her teeth,
  • Not Synced
and we complimented each others' teeth.
  • Not Synced
Because he's an open mouth sleeper,
  • Not Synced
he says he has to floss more
    to help prevent gum disease,
  • Not Synced
and so I asked him how often he flosses,
  • Not Synced
and he said, "Every other day."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Now, as someone who flosses twice a day,
  • Not Synced
    I wasn't really sure that
    that was flossing more
  • Not Synced
but I don't think I said that out loud.
  • Not Synced
    Bill is an auditor,
  • Not Synced
    and we talked the entire
    three minutes about auditing.
  • Not Synced
    The first thing Spencer notices
about a woman is her complexion.
  • Not Synced
He feels a lot of women
    wear too much makeup,
  • Not Synced
and that they should only wear enough
to accentuate the features that they have.
  • Not Synced
I told him I didn't wear any makeup at all
  • Not Synced
    and he seemed to think
that that was a good thing.
  • Not Synced
Craig told me he didn't think
I was willing to be vulnerable.
  • Not Synced
He was also frustrated when I couldn't
    remember my most embarrassing moment.
  • Not Synced
He thought I was lying, but I wasn't.
  • Not Synced
I didn't think he liked me at all,
but at the end of the night,
  • Not Synced
he came back to me and he gave me
    a box of chocolates.
  • Not Synced
William was really difficult to talk to.
  • Not Synced
    I think he was drunk.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Actor Chris McKenna
was the MC of the event.
  • Not Synced
    He used to be on
    "The Young and the Restless."
  • Not Synced
I didn't actually go on a date with him.
  • Not Synced
Alex said he saw several women
give their phone numbers to him.
  • Not Synced
Needless to say, I didn't fall in love.
  • Not Synced
    I didn't feel a particular connection with
any of the men that I went on dates with,
  • Not Synced
and I didn't feel like they felt
a particular connection with me either.
  • Not Synced
AS: Now, the most beautiful thing to me
  • Not Synced
    -- (Laughter) -- as a photographer
  • Not Synced
    is the quality of vulnerability.
  • Not Synced
The physical exterior reveals a crack
in which you can get a glimpse
  • Not Synced
    at a more fragile interior.
  • Not Synced
    At this date-a-thon event,
I saw so many examples of that,
  • Not Synced
but as I watched Stacey's dates
and talked to her about them,
  • Not Synced
    I realized how different
photograph love is from real love.
  • Not Synced
What is real love? How does it work?
  • Not Synced
In order to work on this question
and to figure out how someone goes
  • Not Synced
    from meeting on a date
    to having a life together,
  • Not Synced
Stacey and I went to Sun City Summerlin,
  • Not Synced
    which is the largest
    retirement community in Las vegas.
  • Not Synced
    Our contact there was George,
  • Not Synced
who runs the community's photography club.
  • Not Synced
He arranged for us to meet other couples
    in their makeshift photo studio.
  • Not Synced
SB: After 45 years of marriage,
Anastasia's husband died two years ago,
  • Not Synced
s owe asked if she had
    an old wedding picture.
  • Not Synced
    She met her husband
when she was a 15-year old waitress
  • Not Synced
at a small barbecue place in Michigan.
  • Not Synced
    He was 30.
  • Not Synced
    She'd lied about her age.
  • Not Synced
He was the first person she'd dated.
  • Not Synced
Dean had been named Photographer of
the Year in Las Vegas two years in a row,
  • Not Synced
    and this caught Alec's attention,
  • Not Synced
as did the fact that he met his wife Judy
  • Not Synced
at the same age when Alec met Rachel.
  • Not Synced
    Dean admitted that he likes
    to look at beautiful women,
  • Not Synced
    but he's never questioned
    his decision to marry Judy.
  • Not Synced
    AS: George met Josephine
    at a parish dance.
  • Not Synced
He was 18, she was 15.
  • Not Synced
Like a lot of the couples we met,
    they weren't especially philosophical
  • Not Synced
    about their early choices.
  • Not Synced
    George said something
that really stuck with me. He said,
  • Not Synced
    "When you get that feeling
    you just go with it."
  • Not Synced
Bob and Trudy met on a blind date
when she was still in high school.
  • Not Synced
    They said they weren't particularly
attracted to each other when the first met.
  • Not Synced
    Nevertheless, they were
    married soon after.
  • Not Synced
SB: The story that stayed with me the most
  • Not Synced
was that of George, the photography club
    president, and his wife Mary.
  • Not Synced
    This was George and Mary's
    second marriage.
  • Not Synced
They met at a country/western club
in Louisville, Kentucky called the Sahara.
  • Not Synced
    He was there alone drinking
    and she was with friends.
  • Not Synced
    When they started dating,
he owed the IRS 9,000 dollars in taxes,
  • Not Synced
and she offered to help him
    get out of debt,
  • Not Synced
so for the next year, he turned
    his paychecks over to Mary,
  • Not Synced
and she got him out of debt.
  • Not Synced
    George was actually an alcoholic
when they married and Mary knew it.
  • Not Synced
At some point in their marriage,
    he says he consumed
  • Not Synced
    54 beers in one day.
  • Not Synced
Another time, when he was drunk,
    he threatened to kill Mary
  • Not Synced
    and her two kids,
  • Not Synced
    but they escaped
  • Not Synced
at a SWAT Team was called to the house.
  • Not Synced
    Amazingly, Mary took him back,
  • Not Synced
    and eventually things got better.
  • Not Synced
    George has been involved
    in Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Not Synced
and hasn't had a drink in 36 years.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
At the end of the day,
    after we left Sun City,
  • Not Synced
I told Alec that I didn't actually think
  • Not Synced
that the stories of how these couples met
    was all that interesting.
  • Not Synced
    What was more interesting
  • Not Synced
was how they managed to stay together.
  • Not Synced
AS: They all had this beautiful
    quality of endurance,
  • Not Synced
but that was true of the singles, too.
  • Not Synced
    The world is hard,
and the singles were out there
  • Not Synced
trying to connect with other people,
  • Not Synced
    and the couples
    were holding onto each other
  • Not Synced
    after all these decades.
  • Not Synced
My favorite pictures on this trip
    were of Joe and Roseanne.
  • Not Synced
Now, by the time we met Joe and Roseanne,
  • Not Synced
we'd gotten in the habit of asking couples
if they had an old wedding photograph.
  • Not Synced
    In their case, they simultaneously
    pulled out of their wallets
  • Not Synced
    the exact same photograph.
  • Not Synced
    What's more beautiful,
    I thought to myself,
  • Not Synced
this image of a young couple
who has just fallen in love
  • Not Synced
or the idea of these two people
holding onto this image for decades?
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
