Solidarity dinners | Carlos García Maganto | TEDxMadrid

  • 0:10 - 0:12
    Hello everyone.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
Well, Antonella already shared with you
the reasons I am here to talk.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
I don't now if you remember me,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
but I have been here last year
with a group of 16 students,
  • 0:20 - 0:25
ready to participate in a school
    for innovation for postgraduates.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    This is me.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
Our challenge was something we thought
    it was very interesting, namely,
  • 0:30 - 0:34
what could be done to reuse
    the food restaurants throw away?
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    We thought it was interesting,
but we wanted to do it at a bigger scale.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
We wanted to have a better understanding
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    and consider all solutions
    that could be found
  • 0:43 - 0:47
in the area of social entrepreneurship
    and linked back at food.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
This is how we got to visit The Food Bank,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
we got to know more about
    all kinds of social enterprises,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    we found out more about
    ecologic agriculture,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
and alternative ways of food distribution,
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    only to finally realize
  • 1:00 - 1:05
    that what interested us most
was the act of eating in itself.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    There is something about eating
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    that is closely linked
    with current tendencies
  • 1:11 - 1:13
about the eating act we all are part of.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    It is a social act
    where we can share things.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
It's an experience in a world
    where we prefer
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    to live and share things
    rather than own them.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
And all that in the Spanish society
  • 1:28 - 1:30
that we all know is very supportive.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    Our country is the second
most generous in donations in the world.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
This is how Givo was created,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
as a way for everyone to create
    their small social enterprise
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    by starting with something
we all are so familiar with: food.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    Givo is a web platform
    where you can cook
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    meals and dinners together with
    friends and total strangers.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    It's very easy: you access
    the page, create an event,
  • 1:53 - 1:58
decide on the number of participants,
how much you want to get paid,
  • 1:58 - 2:03
and all the money you raise will be
donated to the cause you most care for.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    It's a way for everybody
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    irrespective of their economic power
    to be truly supportive.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
And also a way to transforming
something that we all usually do,
  • 2:11 - 2:16
such as inviting friends over dinner,
    into something more special.
  • 2:16 - 2:20
We need your help to promote
    this project and see it succeeding;
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    we also need a programmer.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    So, if anyone is interested,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    or just wants to know
    more about the project,
  • 2:26 - 2:30
please look for us, we'll be around
and very glad to tell you more about it.
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    Thank you very much.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    (Applause)
