Expanding your identity | Amy Walker | TEDxPhoenixville
-
0:08 - 0:11I'm Amy Walker and I'm a believaholic.
-
0:11 - 0:14(Audience) Hi, Amy.
-
0:14 - 0:15Thank you.
-
0:15 - 0:20I believe that you are capable
of anything you set your mind to. -
0:20 - 0:22When people ask me
to teach them a new skill, -
0:22 - 0:26they're really asking for me
to believe that they're capable of it. -
0:26 - 0:27They want to do it.
-
0:27 - 0:30They just don't quite think
that they can, yet. -
0:30 - 0:35And so I show them,
over and over, that it is possible. -
0:37 - 0:40In small enough increments,
I help them expand their identity -
0:40 - 0:42so that even though they begin by saying,
-
0:42 - 0:45"Oh, I'm just taking lessons,"
-
0:46 - 0:48gradually they'll expand their identity
-
0:48 - 0:53to include the title
"I'm a singer," "I'm an actor," etc. -
0:54 - 0:56I did not begin this way.
-
0:57 - 0:59At the tender age of 14,
-
0:59 - 1:03I was your above-average student
with below-average confidence. -
1:04 - 1:08Depressed, apologetic, and not popular.
-
1:08 - 1:12It wasn't until the end
of my middle-school internment, -
1:12 - 1:13(Laughter)
-
1:13 - 1:15the eighth-grade dance,
-
1:15 - 1:18that all that began to change.
-
1:18 - 1:20I'd somehow managed to squeeze my way
-
1:20 - 1:23into the impenetrable circle
of popular people. -
1:24 - 1:26Clearly out of my element,
-
1:26 - 1:30I began doing what I always did then
and looked around for someone to copy. -
1:31 - 1:35But as I perused all those faces
with too much dark lipliner, -
1:36 - 1:40I noticed that these popular people,
who always know what they're doing, right, -
1:41 - 1:43were looking around
for someone else to follow. -
1:44 - 1:47So I just closed my eyes
and said to myself, -
1:48 - 1:52"Amy Frances Walker,
doesn't matter what they think. -
1:52 - 1:57Music is in your blood.
You've been singing since the highchair. -
1:58 - 2:00Surely, you can dance.
-
2:00 - 2:02You just don't realize it yet.
-
2:02 - 2:07So you reach into your heart,
and you feel the pulse of that music -
2:07 - 2:11and let it carry your body into dance."
-
2:18 - 2:23And as I opened my eyes,
I noticed that they were all following me. -
2:24 - 2:26Suddenly, I had the opportunity to become
-
2:26 - 2:30"She who knows how to dance
at social gatherings." -
2:30 - 2:31(Laughter)
-
2:31 - 2:36It was a big deal for a 14-year-old,
grunge-era fashion casualty. -
2:36 - 2:38(Laughter)
-
2:38 - 2:40And so we encounter a crossroads:
-
2:40 - 2:43The opportunity to be
-
2:43 - 2:45or not to be
-
2:45 - 2:48something we've been
longing to experience. -
2:49 - 2:51I used to look at
a beautiful person and think, -
2:51 - 2:54"She is so gorgeous.
I could never look like that." -
2:54 - 2:56Of course, as we all know,
-
2:56 - 3:01the entire world is only allowed
2000 beauty points, total. -
3:01 - 3:03(Laughter)
-
3:03 - 3:07And since Beyoncé and Juliette Binoche
are obviously 900 points each, -
3:08 - 3:12I must be like a point zero-zero-two
or something, right? -
3:13 - 3:19But if I can look at a rotting leaf
in a way that I see the beauty in it, -
3:19 - 3:22clearly, beauty is not a substance.
-
3:23 - 3:26It's not a material
that only certain things are made of. -
3:26 - 3:28Things like:
-
3:28 - 3:31"Raindrops on roses
and whiskers on kittens, -
3:31 - 3:35and Julie Andrews
because we're all smitten, -
3:35 - 3:38beauty is found in all manner of things,
-
3:38 - 3:44beauty's the way you behold how it sings."
-
3:46 - 3:48(Applause)
-
3:50 - 3:54I began to practice seeing
the abundance of beauty around me. -
3:56 - 4:00The more deeply I observed
beauty singing in every form, -
4:00 - 4:03the more I began to see it in myself.
-
4:03 - 4:08I started rewriting a bunch of old labels
I'd been carrying for a long time: -
4:08 - 4:13not thin enough, not pretty enough,
not talented enough, not good enough. -
4:14 - 4:17It's a challenge to break
old judgment patterns -
4:17 - 4:19you've been identifying with for so long,
-
4:19 - 4:22often without even being aware of them.
-
4:22 - 4:24It can be scary.
-
4:24 - 4:26I've had to abandon the relative comfort
-
4:26 - 4:28of who I think I am
-
4:28 - 4:31for the possibility of whom I may become.
-
4:34 - 4:35It can be hard.
-
4:36 - 4:39It can require courage, you know.
-
4:39 - 4:41But as a wise fish once said,
-
4:41 - 4:42(Laughter)
-
4:42 - 4:44"Just keep swimming.
-
4:44 - 4:46Swimming, swimming. What do we we do?
-
4:46 - 4:52We swim, ha hahaha.
I thank you, Alan and Pixar." -
4:52 - 4:54(Laughter) (Applause)
-
4:55 - 4:57Dory.
-
5:00 - 5:04Courage is not the absence of fear;
-
5:05 - 5:09it's when you just keep swimming
and sing louder than the voice of doubt. -
5:10 - 5:12And so as you watch these speakers today,
-
5:12 - 5:14I invite you to practice seeing
-
5:14 - 5:16the beauty and the potential
in each one of them, -
5:16 - 5:19even beyond the wonders
that they present today. -
5:20 - 5:22As you offer them an opportunity to grow,
-
5:22 - 5:25you'll find that empowerment
reflected back to you -
5:25 - 5:28because they're all here
to share what they've learned -
5:28 - 5:31that you might take it
to new heights on your own path. -
5:31 - 5:32Thank you.
-
5:32 - 5:34(Applause)
