When it comes to laughter, we are all alike | Ahmed Ahmed | TEDxDoha
-
0:00 - 0:04Host: Ladies and gentlemen,
allow me to introduce you -
0:04 - 0:09the one and only, the very funny,
my mentor and comedian, idol, -
0:09 - 0:10Ahmed Ahmed.
-
0:10 - 0:12(Applause)
-
0:15 - 0:17Ahmed Ahmed: Hello everyone!
-
0:17 - 0:21How about another round of applause
for Mohammed, everybody, please! -
0:21 - 0:22(Applause) (Cheers)
-
0:25 - 0:26Thank you for coming out,
-
0:26 - 0:29I'm really honored
to be part of this platform, -
0:29 - 0:31and working with the TEDx organizers,
-
0:31 - 0:35and this whole thing
that's happening in Doha. -
0:35 - 0:38It's eye-opening for me
and it's been a great experience so far. -
0:38 - 0:42For those of you who don't know
who I am, my name is Ahmed Ahmed, -
0:42 - 0:45and I've been an actor for 20 years,
-
0:45 - 0:47a comedian for 15 years,
-
0:47 - 0:49and it's great being a comedian.
-
0:49 - 0:53I get to travel all over the world
and meet people from all over the world, -
0:53 - 0:56the problem is,
getting there it's always the trick -
0:56 - 1:02because if you Google my name,
it comes up on the FBI's most wanted list. -
1:02 - 1:03(Laughter)
-
1:04 - 1:06There's this terrorist
in the Middle East -
1:06 - 1:09- he's from Egypt -
and he kind of looks like me. -
1:11 - 1:13He uses all the names;
-
1:13 - 1:18the aliases he goes by are "Ahmed Ahmed",
and "Ahmed The Egyptian". -
1:18 - 1:21So, I'm like, I got to find
this guy, it's killing me. -
1:21 - 1:22(Laughter)
-
1:22 - 1:24And then it dawned to me,
-
1:24 - 1:26maybe he's in the Middle East
googling me, going: -
1:26 - 1:29"Hey bro, look, there is
this comedian in America, man!" -
1:29 - 1:30(Laughter)
-
1:30 - 1:32"He's using my name,
I can't believe this!" -
1:32 - 1:33(Laughter)
-
1:33 - 1:34Random Arabs walk up to him:
-
1:34 - 1:37"Hey bro, I saw you on YouTube,
you're so funny, tell me a joke!" -
1:37 - 1:39And he's like: "I'm not a comedian, bro."
-
1:39 - 1:42"I'm a terrorist,
want me to prove it to you?" -
1:42 - 1:43(Laughter)
-
1:43 - 1:44"I blow myself up right now, I swear!"
-
1:44 - 1:46(Laughter)
-
1:46 - 1:48"Google me!"
-
1:48 - 1:49(Laughter)
-
1:49 - 1:53The great thing is
that traveling around the world, -
1:53 - 1:58we got the privilege and honor
to come to the Middle East, -
1:58 - 2:00and some of you are surely familiar
with our tour called, -
2:00 - 2:03"The axis of evil comedy tour"
-
2:03 - 2:06which we were privileged to do in 2007,
-
2:06 - 2:10and we have done 27 sold out shows,
-
2:10 - 2:13in 5 countries, and in 30 days.
-
2:13 - 2:16And it was a great,
sort of pioneering experience for -
2:16 - 2:20not only for us
but the generations that followed us. -
2:20 - 2:24And the last tour we did in 2009,
we were able to document this tour. -
2:24 - 2:29We went to Dubai, Lebanon,
Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. -
2:29 - 2:34It was another groundbreaking tour for us
because we got to document it as a film, -
2:34 - 2:36and called it "Just like us."
-
2:36 - 2:40We were blessed and honored to be
in the Tribeca Film Festival, -
2:40 - 2:42that's where we premiered our film.
-
2:42 - 2:46And after being denied by
a lot of festivals, Tribeca embraced us. -
2:46 - 2:50When we got into Tribeca,
they did the same thing as they did here, -
2:50 - 2:53they gave us a nice world premier,
-
2:53 - 2:55celebrities showed up,
-
2:55 - 2:58I was introduce to Robert De Niro.
-
2:58 - 3:02When I met Robert De Niro,
I was fascinated -
3:02 - 3:05because he's one of the guys
who made me want to be an actor. -
3:05 - 3:08So the publicists
pulled me aside, and they said: -
3:08 - 3:10"Ahmed, this is Robert De Niro.
-
3:10 - 3:13Mr. De Niro,
this is director Ahmed Ahmed." -
3:13 - 3:15And De Niro looks at me and he goes --
-
3:15 - 3:17(Laughter)
-
3:21 - 3:23"My wife and I watched your movie, and --
-
3:24 - 3:26it's good."
-
3:26 - 3:28(Laughter)
-
3:28 - 3:29"Your movie was --
-
3:30 - 3:32it's good."
-
3:32 - 3:33(Laughter)
-
3:33 - 3:35I said: "Thanks!
This is coming from Robert De Niro." -
3:35 - 3:39He says: "I noticed there's a part
in your movie where..." (Laughter) -
3:39 - 3:43"you go to Egypt. You know,
I've been in Egypt before." -
3:43 - 3:44I go: "Yeah? Where?"
-
3:44 - 3:46He goes: "You now, around."
-
3:46 - 3:48(Laughter)
-
3:48 - 3:51Like, don't ask too many questions,
or I'm going to wack you! -
3:51 - 3:52(Laughter)
-
3:52 - 3:56So, I said: "Wow, this is great,
can I introduce you to my father?" -
3:56 - 3:58He's like: "Yeah, yeah, of course."
-
3:58 - 4:00So my father is on the film,
he actually steals the movie. -
4:00 - 4:04And my father is a 5'5'' Egyptian guy,
-
4:04 - 4:07who doesn't watch American television,
doesn't watch American movies, -
4:07 - 4:10he's got no clue who De Niro is.
-
4:10 - 4:12(Laughter)
-
4:12 - 4:16I said: "Baba, I'm going to
introduce you to Robert De Niro." -
4:16 - 4:19And he goes: "Yes, yes, let him meet me."
-
4:19 - 4:20(Laughter)
-
4:26 - 4:29I'm like, "Oh, this is going
to go horribly -" -
4:30 - 4:32"Just be cool, dad."
-
4:32 - 4:35"Mr. De Niro, this is my father,
Abu Bakhar Ahmed." -
4:35 - 4:38"Dad, this is Robert De Niro,
it's his Film Festival." -
4:38 - 4:40And De Niro looks at my dad and he goes --
-
4:40 - 4:42(Laughter)
-
4:42 - 4:44"You're the guy in the movie!"
-
4:44 - 4:45(Laughter)
-
4:45 - 4:46And he hugs my dad.
-
4:46 - 4:49And they had a moment,
and it was really sweet. -
4:49 - 4:54We had an after party after the screening
and the whole thing, -
4:54 - 4:57and my dad is walking around
the after party telling all his friends: -
4:57 - 5:00(imitating father's voice)
"I just met Johnny De Niro." -
5:00 - 5:01(Laughter)
-
5:01 - 5:04"He's good guy, nice guy."
-
5:04 - 5:07I said: "Baba, it's Bobby De Niro."
-
5:07 - 5:10(imitating father's voice) "Bobby, Johnny.
Ahmed, they are the same thing." -
5:10 - 5:11(Laughter)
-
5:11 - 5:12I talk about my father
-
5:13 - 5:16because he's one of the people
who has influenced me as a comedian, -
5:16 - 5:20because he's one of the funniest guys
I've ever been around. -
5:20 - 5:24He's also, being Egyptian, has
the (Egyptian) "muthif" -- -
5:24 - 5:26(Laughter)
-
5:26 - 5:28which means, he's light-blooded.
-
5:29 - 5:32For the non-Arab speaking people.
-
5:32 - 5:33(Laughter)
-
5:33 - 5:36And he's always cracking jokes,
he can't help it, -
5:36 - 5:38he has to crack a joke wherever he goes.
-
5:38 - 5:40He smoked for 40 years,
had a heart attack, -
5:40 - 5:43and they had to give him
an open-heart surgery. -
5:43 - 5:46He goes under the knife,
-
5:46 - 5:49they dissect him like a frog,
cut the heart out of his body, -
5:49 - 5:52take veins out of his legs
to make new arteries, -
5:52 - 5:53it was a major operation.
-
5:53 - 5:56He's at the Intensive
Care Unit for 12 hours. -
5:57 - 6:00He wakes up from
the anesthesia, open his eyes, -
6:00 - 6:03there's two nurses hovering over him,
he looks up and he says: -
6:03 - 6:06(Exhaling) "Where I am?"
-
6:06 - 6:08(Laughter)
-
6:08 - 6:10One of the nurses said, "ICU".
-
6:10 - 6:12He says: "I see you too, but where I am?"
-
6:12 - 6:15(Laughter)
-
6:15 - 6:17(imitating father's voice)
"That was a good one." -
6:17 - 6:19(Laughter)
-
6:19 - 6:21The nurse says: "Are you OK, Mr. Ahmed?"
-
6:21 - 6:23He goes: "Yes, I am OK."
-
6:23 - 6:25"Thanks God."
-
6:25 - 6:27"Thanks God, I am OK."
-
6:27 - 6:30"I know I cannot be dead.
This is not Heaven." -
6:30 - 6:33(Laughter)
-
6:33 - 6:35"There's only two of you."
-
6:35 - 6:37(Laughter) (Cheers)
-
6:42 - 6:46Now, with our film -- (Chuckles)
-
6:48 - 6:50we've managed to cover a lot of ground.
-
6:50 - 6:53We've been in 17 film festivals
since Tribeca, -
6:53 - 6:57we've been honored to be here,
at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, -
6:57 - 7:01and I've also met some influential people,
aside from Robert De Niro. -
7:01 - 7:03I was doing a speech
-
7:03 - 7:06at the Arab-American Institute
in Washington D.C., -
7:06 - 7:10that James Zogby, who is the President,
asked me to come to speak at. -
7:10 - 7:12It was for the Khalid Al Gibran Award,
-
7:12 - 7:14where they gave an award
to somebody, and he said: -
7:14 - 7:16"Would you come up
and speak for 7-8 minutes?" -
7:16 - 7:19I said: "Sure, can I show
a trailer for my film?" -
7:19 - 7:20He says: "Sure, why not."
-
7:20 - 7:23So, I showed the trailer for my film
and in the audience that night, -
7:23 - 7:26was somebody from Barack Obama's camp
-
7:26 - 7:30because a couple of weeks later,
I received an email that said: -
7:30 - 7:32"Dear Mr. Ahmed Ahmed,
-
7:32 - 7:34the President of the United States,
Barack Obama, -
7:34 - 7:37would like to invite you
to the White House -
7:37 - 7:40for his Iftar dinner
in observance of Ramadan." -
7:40 - 7:43I thought it was a joke,
so I replied: "LOL". -
7:43 - 7:45(Laughter)
-
7:45 - 7:48"Wink, wink... is this Rob?"
-
7:48 - 7:50(Laughter)
-
7:50 - 7:51"Send".
-
7:51 - 7:53I got a replied the next day,
-
7:53 - 7:55"No, for real, you're invited
to the White House." -
7:55 - 7:57(Laughter)
-
7:57 - 8:02I got a plane ticket, flew to D.C.,
I showed up to the White House, -
8:02 - 8:05and there's about 150 Muslims
standing outside. -
8:05 - 8:07And I'm like: "This looks really shady."
-
8:07 - 8:09(Laughter)
-
8:09 - 8:13This woman walks up with the hijab,
and she got a guest list, and she says: -
8:13 - 8:16"Are you here for the dinner?"
I said: "Yes, I am." -
8:16 - 8:17"What's your name?"
"Ahmed Ahmed." -
8:17 - 8:20And she's flipping through
the pages on the guest list, -
8:20 - 8:23and the most important people
in the world were there, -
8:23 - 8:26ambassadors, diplomats, royalty, VIPs.
-
8:26 - 8:29On the very bottom it says,
"community member" -
8:29 - 8:31(Laughter)
-
8:31 - 8:32Ahmed Ahmed.
-
8:32 - 8:36She checks me off, I go in,
we all kind of mingle in the lobby, -
8:36 - 8:39and next thing I know, I hear
the Adhan call the prayer, -
8:39 - 8:41in the White House.
-
8:41 - 8:43Next thing you know,
these two doors popped open -
8:43 - 8:46into the big banquet hall
where they have the big dinners, -
8:46 - 8:48and it was completely empty.
-
8:48 - 8:51On the floors were huge prayer rugs.
-
8:51 - 8:53So, all the Muslims walked in,
took their shoes off, -
8:53 - 8:58an imam came in, started the prayer,
and we made prayer in the White House. -
8:58 - 9:03After my prayer, I'm sitting on my knees,
looking up to the ceiling, -
9:03 - 9:06and I thought to myself, "We got in!"
-
9:06 - 9:07(Laughter)
-
9:09 - 9:10(Applause)
-
9:15 - 9:17After the prayer was over with,
-
9:17 - 9:21everyone put their shoes on
and proceeded into the dinner room. -
9:21 - 9:22Now, in the dinner room,
-
9:22 - 9:26there was about 20-30 tables
with about 10 people at each table. -
9:26 - 9:29I don't know who the wedding planner
was for this thing, -
9:29 - 9:31but the had me at table number 7.
-
9:31 - 9:35Table number 7 was
right next to Barack Obama's table, -
9:35 - 9:39and in front of the podium
where he was doing his speech. -
9:39 - 9:40So, I'd sit down,
-
9:40 - 9:44and there's a little name card
with my name, Ahmed Ahmed. -
9:44 - 9:46I'm looking at it, I'm like,
oh, this is great. -
9:46 - 9:49I'm taking silverware
and putting it into my -- -
9:49 - 9:50I'm taking whatever I can
-
9:50 - 9:52because I want evidence
that I was at the White House. -
9:52 - 9:57Next thing I know, this important-looking
short guy with a bald head sits next to me -
9:57 - 10:00and I said: "As-salamu-alaikum",
he goes: "Wa-alaikum-salaam." -
10:00 - 10:02And I said: "So, what do you do?"
-
10:02 - 10:04He said: "I am the Ambassador
of Libya, and you?" -
10:04 - 10:06(Laughter)
-
10:08 - 10:09"It's not important --"
-
10:09 - 10:11(Laughter)
-
10:11 - 10:14What am I going to say
to the Ambassador of Libya? -
10:14 - 10:16Next thing I know, Barack walks in
-
10:16 - 10:19- I call him Barack
because we're on first name basis - -
10:19 - 10:20(Laughter)
-
10:23 - 10:27he goes up to the podium,
and he does this beautiful speech, -
10:27 - 10:31and then he goes to the table next to me,
sits down for about 20 minutes, -
10:31 - 10:33and right before dinner was over with,
-
10:33 - 10:38he gets up and starts shaking
everyone's hand in the dinner room. -
10:38 - 10:42And he's giving everyone
like 15-30 seconds. -
10:42 - 10:46So, when he's coming toward me,
I'm like, what do I say to the President? -
10:46 - 10:49He walks up, he stick his hand up,
and I go: "As-salamu-alaikum", -
10:49 - 10:52and he goes: "Wa-alaikum-salaam."
-
10:52 - 10:55And I said: "It's an honor
to be here, at this Iftar dinner." -
10:55 - 11:00"I'm grateful for the opportunity
and thanks for having me." -
11:00 - 11:04And I said: "Not for nothing,
but you were in Saudi Arabia -
11:04 - 11:07the same day we were,
when you went to meet the King." -
11:07 - 11:11"What were you doing in Saudi?"
I said: "We were doing comedy shows." -
11:11 - 11:14He goes: "You're a comedian."
I was like: "Yeah, on my good days." -
11:14 - 11:16(Laughter)
-
11:16 - 11:17He was like: "Well, that's great."
-
11:17 - 11:20I said: "Well, we made a movie
about it, you are in it." -
11:20 - 11:21He goes: "Really?"
-
11:23 - 11:27I said: "Yeah, I actually brought a copy
and I gave it to your assistant. -
11:28 - 11:29I know you're busy--"
-
11:29 - 11:31(Laughter)
-
11:31 - 11:33"trying to save
the world and everything --" -
11:33 - 11:34(Laughter)
-
11:37 - 11:40"but if you have some time,
I'd love for you to watch it." -
11:40 - 11:43And he says:
"Well, how long is your project?" -
11:43 - 11:44I said: "It's 72 minutes."
-
11:44 - 11:49He says: "I can't promise you 72
but I give you 30," and he walked away. -
11:51 - 11:52(Laughter)
-
11:55 - 11:57And when he walked away,
I thought to myself: -
11:57 - 12:00"Well, can you get Michelle
to watch the other 42?" -
12:00 - 12:02(Laughter)
-
12:02 - 12:06Anyway, he came back,
he had to walk past my table -
12:06 - 12:10because it was near the exit,
he has to walk past our table, -
12:10 - 12:14he comes right past me,
and naturally, I stand up, and I go: -
12:14 - 12:17"Mr. President, thank you very much
for having me at this dinner." -
12:17 - 12:19And he says: "That's our pleasure".
-
12:19 - 12:22And he pats me at the shoulder and says:
"I'll make sure and watch your video." -
12:22 - 12:25And he walked away
and I was like-- (Chuckle) -
12:25 - 12:26video?
-
12:26 - 12:28(Laughter)
-
12:28 - 12:29It's a film, dude.
-
12:29 - 12:31(Laughter)
-
12:31 - 12:33justlikeusthemovie.com -- look it up.
-
12:35 - 12:37Well, that led to another experience.
-
12:38 - 12:41Apparently, what's happening in D.C. is
-
12:43 - 12:44they're trying to fix foreign policies.
-
12:44 - 12:48Our governments are trying
to shake hands with the Middle East, -
12:48 - 12:49especially the Muslim world.
-
12:49 - 12:54The next day I received an email
from Hillary Clinton's Office. -
12:54 - 12:57Hillary's Clinton's Office
sends me an email saying -- -
12:57 - 12:59(Laughter)
-
13:01 - 13:04All my friends think
I'm Forrest Gump, just so you know. -
13:04 - 13:06(Laughter)
-
13:07 - 13:11They are like: "Dude, you're always
at important places, with important people -
13:11 - 13:12and nobody knows you!"
-
13:12 - 13:14(Laughter)
-
13:16 - 13:22Hillary Clinton gives me the same invite:
-
13:22 - 13:25"State Department, September 7th,
-
13:25 - 13:27we'd be honored
if you attend the Iftar dinner." -
13:27 - 13:29I'm like, great, this has to be real
-
13:29 - 13:32because nobody is going to play a prank
from the State Department, -
13:32 - 13:35and I think Hillary was like:
"Give me Barack's list." -
13:35 - 13:36(Laughter)
-
13:36 - 13:40"I want to know who's on Barack's list,
I want those people at my dinner." -
13:40 - 13:41Her dinner was a little different --
-
13:41 - 13:45She had about 300 people,
mostly people who were 40 and under, -
13:45 - 13:47that were progressive in their fields.
-
13:47 - 13:53Novelists, playwrights, doctors,
lawyers, engineers, comedians, -
13:53 - 13:57directors, actors, actresses, dancers.
-
13:57 - 14:00And I was really shocked
that she was pushing this initiative -
14:00 - 14:05to have people from
our community at her dinner. -
14:05 - 14:06And same thing:
-
14:06 - 14:10walked in, my table was number 5,
-
14:11 - 14:14and I'm looking at my card,
I'm looking at the tables, and I'm like, -
14:14 - 14:16maybe I'm in the back,
where is this thing? -
14:16 - 14:19And I noticed it's right
in front of the podium again. -
14:19 - 14:21So, I'm like, I love the wedding planner.
-
14:21 - 14:23(Laughter)
-
14:23 - 14:27So, I sit down, Hillary Clinton walks in,
-
14:27 - 14:29she gives this amazing speech,
-
14:29 - 14:30and then she walks around,
-
14:30 - 14:33does the same thing,
shakes everybody hands -
14:33 - 14:35- this is the before dinner, mind you -
-
14:35 - 14:36Now, when she gets to me, I said:
-
14:36 - 14:39"Hello, Secretary, my name is Ahmed Ahmed,
-
14:39 - 14:44I was invited by Farah Pandith,
one of the people in your camp, -
14:44 - 14:46it's an honor to be here."
-
14:46 - 14:49And she said: "It's great to have you."
And I said: "I'm a stand-up comedian." -
14:49 - 14:53And she said: "Well, then you'd better
make me laugh at dinner." -
14:53 - 14:56So, I'm like: "Cool, I guess
I'm sitting with the Secretary." -
14:56 - 14:58She sits right across from me.
-
14:58 - 15:01Now, to my left is the Ambassador
of Kuwait, and to right was -- -
15:01 - 15:04I don't know, somebody else
that was too important to talk to. -
15:04 - 15:06(Laughter)
-
15:06 - 15:08And Hillary, I call her Hil,
-
15:08 - 15:11(Laughter)
-
15:11 - 15:13Hil leaned over
-
15:13 - 15:16and I thought she was going right
to the ambassadors or the diplomats, -
15:16 - 15:20[but] she leans right into me and says:
"So, tell me about your comedy shows." -
15:20 - 15:23"We've been performing
in the Middle East for the past 3 years." -
15:23 - 15:26"How many people show up to your shows?"
"Sometimes 2,000 - 3,000." -
15:26 - 15:29She says: "That's amazing.
And you do it in English?" -
15:29 - 15:32I said: "Yes, we do it in English."
She said: "And did they get it?" -
15:32 - 15:34(Laughter)
-
15:35 - 15:36I said: "Yeah, they get it."
-
15:36 - 15:37(Laughter)
-
15:37 - 15:40"We actually made a movie about it.
It's called 'Just like us'." -
15:40 - 15:43"I'd love to see it."
"Funny you should mention that --" -
15:43 - 15:44And I got her a DVD.
-
15:44 - 15:46(Laughter)
-
15:47 - 15:52She sent me a really nice personalized
thank-you note, a few weeks later, -
15:52 - 15:54recognizing the work that we're doing.
-
15:54 - 15:58I say "we" because there's a lot of us
doing stand-up comedy initiative -
15:58 - 16:01because we all have to laugh
at ourselves at the end of the day, -
16:01 - 16:05despite our cultural differences,
despite our religious differences, -
16:05 - 16:08we are all just alike
when it comes to laughter. -
16:08 - 16:11And when she sent me this note,
I got some chill at my spine -
16:11 - 16:15because it was a really nice note,
and she took the time to do it. -
16:15 - 16:18I give her kudos for that.
-
16:18 - 16:24When I left D.C. I went on a tour,
I was sort of going around, -
16:24 - 16:27to the UK, went to Scandinavia,
-
16:27 - 16:30and eventually ended up here, in Doha.
-
16:30 - 16:33And what happened was,
when I was flying here to Doha, -
16:33 - 16:35because my name is in all these lists,
-
16:35 - 16:39it's very tough to flight around
with the name Ahmed Ahmed. -
16:39 - 16:42I can't even flight a kite anymore,
that's how bad it's gotten. -
16:42 - 16:43(Laughter)
-
16:43 - 16:45And I'm always getting profiled
-
16:45 - 16:49- and I get profile
before being profiled - -
16:49 - 16:52I'm walking to the ticket
counter to check-in -
16:52 - 16:55and I can see the woman
looking at me as I'm walking up. -
16:55 - 16:57She's an older African-American woman,
-
16:57 - 17:00and I give her my ID
and she does one of these -- -
17:00 - 17:02(imitating the woman) Hmm...uh...
-
17:02 - 17:03(Laughter)
-
17:06 - 17:09(Clicking sound imitating typing
on computer) (Imitating the woman) -
17:09 - 17:13"Yeah, honey, you know your name
comes up on a list, you know that." -
17:13 - 17:14(Laughter)
-
17:14 - 17:15"I have to make a phone call."
-
17:16 - 17:19(Clicking sound
imitating phone dialing) -
17:19 - 17:21(Imitating the woman) "Yeah, we got one."
-
17:21 - 17:22(Laughter)
-
17:23 - 17:27(Imitating the woman)

Many subtitles I had to go over the 21 character/sec reading speed because the speaker speaks quite fast, so it was a bit challenging. I adjusted as much as I could, but some I had to leave as it is or they wouldn't be synced correctly.
Also, I hit "submit" then I remembered I did not edit the Title and Description. Sorry for that and thank you for reviewing.
