Diversity and Inclusion: Lessons In Friendship and Love | Maryam Elassar | TEDxAmanaAcademy
-
0:11 - 0:14Hi, my name is Maryam Elassar.
-
0:14 - 0:17This is my fourth year
in Amana Academy School, -
0:17 - 0:20and this is my first time
giving a Ted Talk. -
0:20 - 0:25I'll be talking about my idea how to unify
the people of this world together, -
0:25 - 0:29so we can all live peacefully
and stop fighting over our differences, -
0:29 - 0:33and focus more on our similarities.
-
0:33 - 0:37It all started one day
when I went to the park after school. -
0:37 - 0:40I didn't have anyone to play with.
-
0:40 - 0:42And then this girl came.
-
0:42 - 0:44She was so quiet and shy.
-
0:44 - 0:46My mom saw her and said,
-
0:46 - 0:48"Why won't you go and talk to that girl?
-
0:48 - 0:49Then you can play together."
-
0:49 - 0:51I thought it was a good idea.
-
0:52 - 0:56Once I went to the girl, asking her
if she would like to play with me, -
0:56 - 0:59she looked at me with her eyes wide open.
-
0:59 - 1:04Suddenly, she seemed confused
and stared at me like I was an alien. -
1:04 - 1:06I stared at her back.
-
1:07 - 1:11Then she said with a foreign accent,
"Why are you dressed that way? -
1:11 - 1:13You look weird."
-
1:13 - 1:17I felt sad because she was judging me
based on what I was wearing -
1:17 - 1:21So I said to her, "And why
are you talking in a weird way?" -
1:21 - 1:23To pay her back for what she said.
-
1:24 - 1:27The girl now seemed
embarrassed by what I said -
1:27 - 1:30and I didn't want her to be sad.
-
1:30 - 1:33Maybe I wasn't supposed
to pay her back that way, -
1:34 - 1:35so I got an idea.
-
1:36 - 1:37I told the girl,
-
1:37 - 1:41"I will tell you why I dress this way
and tell you a little about myself, -
1:41 - 1:45and in return, you will tell me
why you talk differently -
1:45 - 1:48and tell me a little about yourself too.
-
1:48 - 1:50Maybe after we understand each other
-
1:50 - 1:53we can become friends instead of enemies.
-
1:53 - 1:56Then we can play together and have fun."
-
1:57 - 2:02I started explaining that wearing
a head cover and long skirts -
2:02 - 2:05is just good for my religion for girls,
-
2:05 - 2:06and I'm a Muslim child.
-
2:07 - 2:09The girl still looked puzzled.
-
2:09 - 2:12Then she said, "What's a Muslim child?"
-
2:12 - 2:14Right away I had a splendid idea.
-
2:14 - 2:17I remembered the poem I always recited
-
2:17 - 2:20when I felt the need
to explain myself to others. -
2:20 - 2:25I read it in my favourite book
called "Muslim Child" when I was five, -
2:25 - 2:30and decided to use it in situations
like this, so it could become handy. -
2:30 - 2:34I stood in front of the girl and told her,
-
2:34 - 2:39"Listen to this, and hopefully,
you'll accept me as a friend afterwards." -
2:41 - 2:45Please, for all of you who want
to know what a Muslim child is. -
2:45 - 2:48Allow me to share this with you as well:
-
2:50 - 2:56"Muslim child, child of peace,
child of war from a far off distant shore; -
2:57 - 2:59what do your black eyes see?
-
3:03 - 3:08My eyes are not only black,
sometimes they are blue as the sky, -
3:08 - 3:12or green as a tropical sea,
or brown as a trunk of a palm tree, -
3:12 - 3:14and every shade in-between.
-
3:15 - 3:20My skin can be black as molasses,
or as pink as the blush on a rose, -
3:20 - 3:24as golden as freshly made honey,
or dark copper brown as a penny, -
3:24 - 3:27and every shade in-between.
-
3:27 - 3:31I am the richest of rich
and the poorest of poor. -
3:31 - 3:36As famous as famous can be,
a general's child, pampered and bored, -
3:36 - 3:39a soldier's child, orphaned by war.
-
3:39 - 3:41And every rank in between.
-
3:42 - 3:46I come from many countries,
speaking many languages, -
3:46 - 3:49but in one set of beliefs;
-
3:49 - 3:54I believe in Noah, Jesus, Abraham,
Muhammad, and Moses. -
3:54 - 3:55And in God who sent them.
-
3:55 - 3:58And in every messenger in between.
-
3:59 - 4:01So then, Muslim child, child of peace;
-
4:01 - 4:04what do your bright eyes see?
-
4:04 - 4:09I see that we're each a piece
in the puzzle of humanity. -
4:09 - 4:13I'll try to understand you,
if you try to understand me." -
4:15 - 4:19Now back to my story,
guess what the girl did? -
4:19 - 4:23She gave me the biggest smile ever,
clapped for me, and told me, -
4:23 - 4:25"I would love to be your friend."
-
4:25 - 4:27Isn't that amazing?
-
4:27 - 4:31How just a sincere couple
of words, full of knowledge, -
4:31 - 4:34can change the whole situation?
-
4:34 - 4:38I told the girl, "Now it's your turn
to tell me about yourself. -
4:38 - 4:42I have to understand you
like you understand me now." -
4:42 - 4:44The girl started to tell her story.
-
4:45 - 4:49I am from Mexico; we came here
for a better chance of life. -
4:49 - 4:51My dad is a farmer.
-
4:51 - 4:57He tries to support my family by moving
from place to place, finding new jobs. -
4:57 - 4:59We moved to this area last month.
-
4:59 - 5:02I'm still trying to adjust
to my new school. -
5:02 - 5:06It's just so hard for me to improve
my foreign accent that fast. -
5:07 - 5:10I understand better than I speak.
-
5:10 - 5:13And I don't have a lot of friends
to practice speaking with. -
5:13 - 5:16"Maybe if we become friends
you can help me", she said. -
5:18 - 5:23I felt sad and asked her
to forgive me for my ignorance -
5:23 - 5:26when I made a comment
about the way she speaks. -
5:26 - 5:29And told the girl,
"I would love to be your friend. -
5:29 - 5:30Now let's go play."
-
5:30 - 5:35I had so much fun playing with her
and I gained a new friend. -
5:38 - 5:44Please, now, for everyone listening to me,
I hope you got the idea: -
5:44 - 5:47we all have to start fighting
ignorance with knowledge. -
5:47 - 5:51Stop picking on each other,
overcome our differences. -
5:51 - 5:57If each one of us start to pass
a good book, or a nice quote, -
5:57 - 6:00give a beautiful speech,
or write an inspiring story, -
6:00 - 6:05hopefully, my generation can live
in a more peaceful world. -
6:06 - 6:10We all come from different
cultures and backgrounds. -
6:10 - 6:15The way I dress shouldn't change
how people view me in the world. -
6:15 - 6:20Instead, we should all be judged
by our actions and characters. -
6:20 - 6:22Thank you for listening.
-
6:22 - 6:24(Applause)
