Sheri Dew, "Will You Engage in the Wrestle?" BYU-Idaho Devotional

  • 0:08 - 0:10
(MUSIC) NARRATOR: This Brigham Young University—
  • 0:10 - 0:12
Idaho devotional address by Sheri Dew,
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    CEO of Deseret Book,
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    was given May 17th, 2016.
  • 0:21 - 0:26
SHERI DEW: Brothers and sisters, it is such a privilege to be here today,
  • 0:26 - 0:29
and especially to be here with President and Sister Gilbert.
  • 0:29 - 0:34
They are dear and treasured friends and they're remarkable exemplars.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
Now, we're not here today to listen to me speak,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
we are here to receive revelation.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
So I invite you to invite the Holy Ghost to speak to
  • 0:45 - 0:50
you so that you will hear what you need to hear.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
A couple of years ago, a reporter from
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    an international broadcasting network visited
  • 0:54 - 0:57
Salt Lake City researching a story on women in the church.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
She was intrigued that a female was leading
  • 1:00 - 1:03
a church owned media company and asked me for an interview.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    I liked this reporter.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
She had done her homework and she asked good questions,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
though one of them was very predictable.
  • 1:10 - 1:16
"How do you feel about not being eligible for priesthood ordination?" She asked.
  • 1:16 - 1:22
I outlined the extensive leadership opportunities that women have in the church,
  • 1:22 - 1:27
and then explained that as a woman endowed with power in the temple,
  • 1:27 - 1:33
I had complete access to God's power or priesthood power for my own life.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
And I explained that my focus had long
  • 1:36 - 1:40
been on learning how to gain full access to that power.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
She paused then and she asked,
  • 1:44 - 1:51
"Are you saying that you believe you have more access to God's power than I do?"
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    Okay, that's a loaded question.
  • 1:55 - 2:02
(LAUGHTER) My brain began to spin in search of a truthful but politically correct answer.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
But that day, I could not bring myself to sell
  • 2:06 - 2:09
our doctrine or our privileges as women short,
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    so finally I said,
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    "Well, actually, yes."
  • 2:15 - 2:18
Now, do not misunderstand what I'm saying.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
I quickly added, "I am not saying the Lord loves me more than He loves you,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
and I'm not saying that I'm better than you.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
I'm not saying that He's more likely to bless me than you,
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    but if you're asking,
  • 2:29 - 2:34
if I believe that I have greater access to God's power than you do,
  • 2:34 - 2:36
then the answer has to be yes.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
That's one of the blessings of joining this church.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
That's why we join the church.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
We believe that when we make promises to God to follow His son,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
He in turn makes promises to us.
  • 2:46 - 2:52
And one of those promises is that He will give us greater access to His power."
  • 2:52 - 2:57
As I spoke, the Spirit filled the room and it disarmed her.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    Her demeanor softened noticeably.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
And then she asked if I would tell her how the gospel has affected me personally.
  • 3:05 - 3:09
In other words, she basically opened the door for me to bear my testimony.
  • 3:09 - 3:14
I told her that Jesus Christ hasn't just made a difference in my life,
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    He's made all the difference;
  • 3:16 - 3:21
that every good thing that has ever happened to me has come because of my membership in
  • 3:21 - 3:26
His church; and that I have experienced the Savior's healing,
  • 3:26 - 3:30
enabling, strengthening power again and again.
  • 3:30 - 3:36
At that point, the spirit flooded the room and we were both in tears.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
She finally could speak and she said,
  • 3:39 - 3:44
"That's beautiful, I wish I could say that about my church."
  • 3:44 - 3:47
And I said, "Well, we could help you with that."
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    (LAUGHTER) That day I experienced
  • 3:51 - 3:56
the sublime beauty of standing as a witness and bearing witness of truth.
  • 3:56 - 4:00
Consider the miracle of it: through the power of the Holy Ghost,
  • 4:00 - 4:05
we can know what is true with enough confidence and enough surety to testify of truth.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
We can only bear witness of what we know.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
We can't testify of a wish or a hope or even a belief.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
We can express a hope, a wish,
  • 4:15 - 4:18
or a belief, but we cannot stand as witnesses of
  • 4:18 - 4:22
Jesus Christ unless we can bear witness of Him.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
We can defend the faith only if we have faith.
  • 4:26 - 4:32
Our society seems determined to set aside any semblance of faith or right and wrong.
  • 4:32 - 4:36
But the world's condition today is no surprise to the Lord
  • 4:36 - 4:39
who told the Prophet Joseph that we are living in the 11th hour,
  • 4:39 - 4:43
that this is the last time He will call laborers into His vineyard,
  • 4:43 - 4:46
and that His vineyard has become corrupted.
  • 4:46 - 4:53
But the Lord also declared that in the midst of all this moral and spiritual chaos,
  • 4:53 - 4:56
the fullness of His gospel would be proclaimed by the
  • 4:56 - 5:00
weak and the simple and to the ends of the world,
  • 5:00 - 5:03
and He promised that if we would open our mouths,
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    they would be filled.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
You and I are the weak and the simple,
  • 5:07 - 5:12
but we're not here now by accident or without the Lord's endorsement.
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    President George Q. Cannon,
  • 5:13 - 5:18
who served as a counselor to four Presidents of the Church, taught that
  • 5:18 - 5:21
"because of the magnitude of the work to be accomplished,
  • 5:21 - 5:27
it has required apparently the most valiant men and women to come forth now.
  • 5:27 - 5:29
God has reserved spirits for this dispensation
  • 5:29 - 5:33
who have the courage and determination to face the world
  • 5:33 - 5:38
and all the powers of the evil one and to build up the Zion of our God
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    fearless of all consequences."
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    Make no mistake about it.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
You're here now because in the beginning,
  • 5:46 - 5:54
our Father chose you to be here now, and He has hard work for you to do.
  • 5:54 - 6:00
How then do we strengthen our faith so that we can defend the faith?
  • 6:00 - 6:04
Four years ago, a marvelous young woman who had just graduated
  • 6:04 - 6:07
with honors from BYU called me, absolutely distraught.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    Through sobs, she blurted out,
  • 6:10 - 6:14
"I'm just not sure I believe the Church is true anymore, and I'm scared.
  • 6:14 - 6:18
What if my family really isn't going to be together forever?"
  • 6:18 - 6:21
I asked her, "Do you want to have a testimony?"
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    "Yes." She said.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
"Are you willing to work for it?"
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    Again, "yes." And she was.
  • 6:28 - 6:34
She went to work. She had a great bishop and an off-the-charts Relief Society president,
  • 6:34 - 6:35
both of whom worked with her.
  • 6:35 - 6:37
Friends and family came to her rescue, and
  • 6:37 - 6:40
she and I began to meet for gospel study sessions.
  • 6:40 - 6:45
I told her, bring your scriptures and every question you have.
  • 6:45 - 6:49
Questions are good. Let's see what the Lord will teach us together.
  • 6:49 - 6:54
She took me at my word and brought one thorny question after another.
  • 6:54 - 6:58
Honestly, she brought questions I'd never thought of in my life.
  • 6:58 - 7:03
We searched the scriptures and the teachings of prophets for answers.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
Little by little, she began to realize that just
  • 7:06 - 7:11
because she had questions didn't mean she didn't have a testimony—
  • 7:11 - 7:14
the scriptures are filled with accounts of prophets who had questions—
  • 7:14 - 7:18
and she began to recognize when the Spirit was bearing witness to her,
  • 7:18 - 7:22
including and especially, bearing witness that prophets,
  • 7:22 - 7:25
seers, and revelators are truly prophets.
  • 7:25 - 7:29
Her testimony began to grow, and over time the crisis passed.
  • 7:29 - 7:33
Then about a year ago, she called again. "Sister Dew,
  • 7:33 - 7:36
I wanted you to be one of the first to know that
  • 7:36 - 7:38
I'm holding in my hand a temple recommend.
  • 7:38 - 7:41
Will you come when I received my endowment?"
  • 7:41 - 7:44
Then she added, "Do you know what you said,
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    that helped me the most?"
  • 7:46 - 7:48
Well, I had absolutely no clue.
  • 7:48 - 7:52
She said, "You told me that questions are good, and that
  • 7:52 - 7:58
allowed me to see myself as a seeker rather than a doubter."
  • 7:58 - 8:01
I was just overjoyed with that conversation.
  • 8:01 - 8:02
    But then two days later,
  • 8:02 - 8:07
I received a much different call from another BYU graduate.
  • 8:07 - 8:09
    "Sister Dew, " she said.
  • 8:09 - 8:11
"Before you hear it from someone else,
  • 8:11 - 8:15
I want you to hear it from me and to know that I am pregnant."
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    She was not married.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
She said that for several years she had doubted
  • 8:18 - 8:20
the truthfulness of the gospel and had finally
  • 8:20 - 8:25
decided there was no reason to keep living the law of chastity.
  • 8:25 - 8:28
I told her that I was not her judge, and that I loved her.
  • 8:28 - 8:32
Then I asked her if she would like to have a testimony.
  • 8:32 - 8:35
    "No, I don't think so, "
  • 8:35 - 8:39
she said. The contrast was stunning.
  • 8:39 - 8:40
    At about the same time,
  • 8:40 - 8:45
these two young women had questions that threatened their testimonies.
  • 8:45 - 8:47
One of them sent out a cry for help, and
  • 8:47 - 8:53
family, friends and leaders followed President Monson's counsel and went to her rescue.
  • 8:53 - 8:55
The other girl nursed her doubt and convinced
  • 8:55 - 8:58
herself that her immoral choices were acceptable.
  • 8:58 - 9:01
I love and deeply care about this girl,
  • 9:01 - 9:06
but for now, she has chosen a spiritually perilous path.
  • 9:06 - 9:10
One girl's questions propelled her to become a seeker of truth.
  • 9:10 - 9:14
The other girl used her questions to justify her immorality.
  • 9:14 - 9:19
My dear friends, my message today is simply, questions are good.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
Questions are good if they are inspired questions,
  • 9:22 - 9:26
asked in faith, and asked of credible sources where
  • 9:26 - 9:30
the Spirit will direct and confirm the answer.
  • 9:30 - 9:34
Nephi asked an inspired question in faith
  • 9:34 - 9:38
when he asked the Lord if he could see what his father saw.
  • 9:38 - 9:41
The Lord responded by showing Nephi the tree of life,
  • 9:41 - 9:43
the iron rod, the great and spacious building and
  • 9:43 - 9:46
mists of darkness, and the fruit of the tree,
  • 9:46 - 9:49
which is sweet above all that is sweet.
  • 9:49 - 9:52
And then the vision didn't stop there.
  • 9:52 - 9:56
Nephi saw the birth, ministry, and crucifixion of the Savior.
  • 9:56 - 9:58
He saw the coming forth of Latter-day scripture,
  • 9:58 - 10:02
the Restoration, and the building of Latter-day Zion.
  • 10:02 - 10:05
Nephi saw all this and much more,
  • 10:05 - 10:08
only to return to his father's tent and find Laman and
  • 10:08 - 10:12
Lemuel arguing about the meaning of their father's vision.
  • 10:12 - 10:14
    When Nephi ask them,
  • 10:14 - 10:16
"Have ye inquired of the Lord, "
  • 10:16 - 10:20
they gave the classic response of doubters:
  • 10:20 - 10:23
"We have not, for the Lord maketh no such thing known
  • 10:23 - 10:28
unto us" as though nothing was required of them.
  • 10:28 - 10:33
None of us are entitled to revelation without effort on our part.
  • 10:33 - 10:37
Answers from God don't just magically appear.
  • 10:37 - 10:39
If we want to grow spiritually,
  • 10:39 - 10:44
the Lord expects us to ask questions and seek answers.
  • 10:44 - 10:47
"If thou shalt ask," he promised,
  • 10:47 - 10:52
"thou shalt receive revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge."
  • 10:52 - 10:54
How much clearer can it be?
  • 10:54 - 11:01
The Lord loves inspired questions asked in faith because they lead to knowledge,
  • 11:01 - 11:04
to revelation, and to greater faith.
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    We all have questions.
  • 11:07 - 11:11
Some are doctrinal, historical, or procedural.
  • 11:11 - 11:14
    Some are simply intensely personal.
  • 11:14 - 11:20
Here are just a few questions that men and women your age have asked me recently.
  • 11:20 - 11:24
Why am I the only one in my family who struggles to believe?
  • 11:24 - 11:27
Should I serve a mission if my parents don't want me to?
  • 11:27 - 11:31
Why did I spend all that time on a mission and not convert anyone?
  • 11:31 - 11:37
Why can't I find the one? Yeah, tell me about it. (LAUGHTER)
  • 11:40 - 11:43
We don't have time to go into that one.
  • 11:43 - 11:46
    (LAUGHTER) If I go
  • 11:46 - 11:50
to graduate school, will the Lord think that means I don't want to get married?
  • 11:50 - 11:53
Will I be able to provide for a family today?
  • 11:53 - 11:57
Will the Lord ever forgive me for breaking my covenants?
  • 11:57 - 12:00
I came home early from my mission, what do I do now?
  • 12:00 - 12:02
How does the Lord feel about me?
  • 12:02 - 12:05
    Is a prophet infallible?
  • 12:05 - 12:08
Did Joseph Smith really have more than one wife?
  • 12:08 - 12:11
How do I know if I'm receiving revelation?
  • 12:11 - 12:15
Do I dare get serious with a guy who has struggled with pornography?
  • 12:15 - 12:17
Why can't women be ordained to the priesthood?
  • 12:17 - 12:19
    What's that about?
  • 12:19 - 12:23
What if the Church's position on gay marriage bothers me?
  • 12:23 - 12:28
How do I understand the temple when I can't even ask questions about it?
  • 12:29 - 12:31
May I answer these questions and
  • 12:31 - 12:36
frankly any questions you may have by posing a question?
  • 12:36 - 12:41
Are you willing to engage in the wrestle—
  • 12:41 - 12:46
    in an ongoing spiritual wrestle?
  • 12:46 - 12:52
Enos described the wrestle that he had before God to obtain a remission of his sins,
  • 12:52 - 12:56
and Alma wrestled with God in mighty prayer.
  • 12:56 - 12:59
Now, champion wrestlers tell me that it isn't
  • 12:59 - 13:03
necessarily the strongest wrestler with the biggest muscles who wins.
  • 13:03 - 13:09
It's the wrestler who knows how to leverage his strength to overpower his opponent.
  • 13:09 - 13:17
Spiritual wrestling leverages the strength of true doctrine to overpower our weaknesses,
  • 13:17 - 13:19
our wavering faith and our lack of knowledge.
  • 13:19 - 13:22
    Spiritual wrestlers are seekers.
  • 13:22 - 13:26
They are men and women of faith who want to understand more than they presently do,
  • 13:26 - 13:31
and who are serious about increasing the light and knowledge in their lives.
  • 13:31 - 13:36
I recently engaged in a wrestle. When the policy was announced that the children of
  • 13:36 - 13:41
gay parents might not be eligible for baptism at age eight, I was confused.
  • 13:41 - 13:44
I did not question the brethren or doubt their inspiration,
  • 13:44 - 13:48
but neither did I understand the doctrinal basis for the policy.
  • 13:48 - 13:51
So I asked the Lord to teach me.
  • 13:51 - 13:53
    I prayed, searched the scriptures,
  • 13:53 - 13:55
    studied the teachings of prophets,
  • 13:55 - 13:58
and pondered my question in the temple.
  • 13:58 - 14:00
This went on for several months.
  • 14:00 - 14:05
Then one day, a colleague made a statement that sparked a new thought for me.
  • 14:05 - 14:11
And in that moment, the Spirit illuminated the doctrine in my heart and mind.
  • 14:11 - 14:14
Now, I consider that answer that day,
  • 14:14 - 14:19
personal revelation and not something I shouldn't necessarily teach.
  • 14:19 - 14:25
I'll admit that I have wept with friends to whom this policy directly applies.
  • 14:25 - 14:29
But understanding the doctrine gave me peace.
  • 14:29 - 14:33
    When we have unresolved questions,
  • 14:33 - 14:36
our challenge doesn't lie in what we think we know.
  • 14:36 - 14:39
It lies in what we don't yet know.
  • 14:39 - 14:45
The Lord has promised to open the eyes of our understandings and to reveal all mysteries,
  • 14:45 - 14:50
but he isn't likely to do any of these things unless we seek to know.
  • 14:50 - 14:54
Dr. Truman Madsen taught that he could find
  • 14:54 - 14:59
"nothing in the scriptures to excuse anyone from brain sweat,
  • 14:59 - 15:03
and from the arduous lifetime burden of seeking
  • 15:03 - 15:06
'revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge'."
  • 15:06 - 15:12
He was describing an ongoing spiritual wrestle.
  • 15:12 - 15:18
The Lord wants us to ask every probing question we can muster,
  • 15:18 - 15:23
because not asking questions can be far more dangerous than asking them.
  • 15:23 - 15:27
In other words, sin makes you stupid,
  • 15:27 - 15:31
and so does refusing to seek after truth.
  • 15:31 - 15:34
Remember my friend who thought she'd lost her testimony?
  • 15:34 - 15:36
    Her doubt was triggered by
  • 15:36 - 15:40
a television drama featuring a scientist who didn't believe in God.
  • 15:40 - 15:42
    I said, "Wait,
  • 15:42 - 15:47
are you telling me that a fictional character fabricated by
  • 15:47 - 15:53
a Hollywood writer has obliterated 24 years of gospel teaching?"
  • 15:53 - 15:57
"But that woman is so smart," my friend said.
  • 15:57 - 16:02
There have always been and will always be charismatic men and
  • 16:02 - 16:06
women who can launch what sound like on the surface
  • 16:06 - 16:09
reasoned arguments against the Father and the Son,
  • 16:09 - 16:11
    the Restoration, the Prophet Joseph,
  • 16:11 - 16:14
the Book of Mormon, and living prophets.
  • 16:14 - 16:16
But doubters and pundits never tell
  • 16:16 - 16:20
the whole story because they don't know the whole story, and they don't want to know.
  • 16:20 - 16:22
    They opt for clever soundbites,
  • 16:22 - 16:25
hoping no one digs deeper than they have.
  • 16:25 - 16:28
Soundbites will never lead to a testimony.
  • 16:28 - 16:31
As seekers of truth, our safety lies in asking
  • 16:31 - 16:35
the right questions in faith and of the right sources,
  • 16:35 - 16:38
meaning asking those who only speak truth,
  • 16:38 - 16:40
    such as the scriptures,
  • 16:40 - 16:44
prophets, and the Lord through the Holy Ghost.
  • 16:44 - 16:48
President Spencer W. Kimball declared this:
  • 16:48 - 16:51
"Why. oh, why do people think they can fathom
  • 16:51 - 16:54
the most complex spiritual depths without
  • 16:54 - 16:58
the necessary work accompanied by compliance with the laws that govern it?
  • 16:58 - 17:03
Absurd it is, but you will find popular personalities, who seem never to
  • 17:03 - 17:08
have lived a single law of God, discoursing about religion.
  • 17:08 - 17:14
How ridiculous for such persons to attempt to outline for the world a way of life.
  • 17:14 - 17:17
One cannot know God nor understand his works or
  • 17:17 - 17:22
plans unless he follows the laws which govern."
  • 17:22 - 17:25
    Questions are not just good,
  • 17:25 - 17:31
they are vital because the ensuing spiritual wrestle leads to answers,
  • 17:31 - 17:34
    to knowledge, and to revelation,
  • 17:34 - 17:37
and it also leads to greater faith.
  • 17:37 - 17:44
That's important because men and women of faith are expected to have faith.
  • 17:44 - 17:47
While the Lord will reveal many things to us,
  • 17:47 - 17:52
He's never told His covenant people everything about everything.
  • 17:52 - 17:57
We're admonished to doubt not, but be believing.
  • 17:57 - 18:01
But doubting not does not mean understanding everything.
  • 18:01 - 18:04
Doubting is not synonymous with having questions,
  • 18:04 - 18:07
to doubt is to reject truth and faith.
  • 18:07 - 18:09
    As covenant sons and daughters,
  • 18:09 - 18:11
we are required to have faith,
  • 18:11 - 18:13
to live by faith, to ask in faith,
  • 18:13 - 18:17
nothing wavering, and to overcome by faith.
  • 18:17 - 18:21
Learning by faith is as crucial as learning by study,
  • 18:21 - 18:25
because there are some things we simply cannot learn from a book.
  • 18:25 - 18:30
Elder Dallin H. Oaks underscored this truth in the recent general conference:
  • 18:30 - 18:33
    "After all we can publish,
  • 18:33 - 18:39
our members are sometimes left with basic questions that cannot be resolved by study.
  • 18:39 - 18:41
Some things can be learned only by faith.
  • 18:41 - 18:44
Our ultimate reliance must be on faith in
  • 18:44 - 18:49
the witness we have received from the Holy Ghost."
  • 18:49 - 18:53
Thus, once the Spirit has borne witness to you
  • 18:53 - 18:57
that God is our Father and Jesus is the Christ,
  • 18:57 - 19:00
that Joseph Smith was a prophet called to restore
  • 19:00 - 19:03
the gospel, and that we are led by a prophet today,
  • 19:03 - 19:05
then you know the gospel is true because
  • 19:05 - 19:10
the Spirit has borne witness of the foundational truths that comprise a testimony.
  • 19:10 - 19:12
    You have a testimony.
  • 19:12 - 19:15
At that point, when questions arise or when
  • 19:15 - 19:19
blessings you've been pleading for remain unfulfilled,
  • 19:19 - 19:24
they are not an indication that you don't have a testimony or that the gospel isn't true.
  • 19:24 - 19:27
They are an invitation for you to grow spiritually.
  • 19:27 - 19:30
I repeat, once you have received
  • 19:30 - 19:34
a spiritual witness of the truths that form a testimony,
  • 19:34 - 19:39
even your thorniest questions about our doctrine, history,
  • 19:39 - 19:41
    positions on sensitive issues,
  • 19:41 - 19:46
or the aching desires of your hearts are about personal growth.
  • 19:46 - 19:52
They are opportunities for you to receive personal revelation and to increase your faith.
  • 19:52 - 19:58
We don't have to have answers to every question in order to receive a witness,
  • 19:58 - 20:03
bear witness, and stand as a witness.
  • 20:03 - 20:06
But questions, especially the tough ones,
  • 20:06 - 20:07
will propel us to engage in
  • 20:07 - 20:12
a spiritual wrestle so that the Lord can continue to lead us along.
  • 20:12 - 20:15
    Without plain old spiritual work,
  • 20:15 - 20:17
even God can't make us grow,
  • 20:17 - 20:20
    or at least He won't.
  • 20:20 - 20:23
My life has been filled with spiritual wrestling.
  • 20:23 - 20:27
Not because of any great valor on my part,
  • 20:27 - 20:29
but because I have yearned to understand why
  • 20:29 - 20:33
certain things were happening to me and why others were not.
  • 20:33 - 20:36
    For decades, I have fasted,
  • 20:36 - 20:38
prayed, and pleaded for a husband.
  • 20:38 - 20:40
    I've asked who he is,
  • 20:40 - 20:42
where he is, and when he's coming.
  • 20:42 - 20:44
    As of this very moment,
  • 20:44 - 20:47
I still don't know the answer to any of those questions.
  • 20:47 - 20:51
But, the ongoing spiritual wrestle has
  • 20:51 - 20:56
blessed me with the knowledge that Jesus Christ is my Savior,
  • 20:56 - 20:59
that His gospel is filled with power,
  • 20:59 - 21:02
and that God will talk to me and direct me.
  • 21:02 - 21:05
Growing spiritually and receiving answers to
  • 21:05 - 21:09
our questions depends upon our ability to feel,
  • 21:09 - 21:12
hear, and understand the whisperings of the Spirit.
  • 21:12 - 21:15
    It is worth engaging in
  • 21:15 - 21:20
an ongoing spiritual wrestle to learn to receive personal revelation.
  • 21:20 - 21:24
Because we can only know what is true when the Spirit bears witness
  • 21:24 - 21:29
to our hearts and our minds as only the Holy Ghost can.
  • 21:29 - 21:31
    Revelation must include both
  • 21:31 - 21:35
because intellect alone cannot produce a testimony.
  • 21:35 - 21:38
You cannot think your way to conversion
  • 21:38 - 21:42
because you cannot convince your mind of something your heart does not feel.
  • 21:42 - 21:50
The Prophet Joseph declared that "The Holy Ghost comprehends more than all the world."
  • 21:50 - 21:56
And then he said that we must all grow into the principle of revelation.
  • 21:56 - 22:00
And President Henry B. Eyring added this:
  • 22:00 - 22:04
"We all know that human judgment and logical thinking will not be
  • 22:04 - 22:08
enough to get answers to the questions that matter most in life.
  • 22:08 - 22:11
    We need revelation from God.
  • 22:11 - 22:13
We need not just one flash of light and comfort,
  • 22:13 - 22:19
but we need the continuing blessing of communication with God."
  • 22:19 - 22:24
Every truth-seeking member of the Church can and
  • 22:24 - 22:28
should be receiving revelation for his or her life.
  • 22:28 - 22:30
In my early 20s, I faced
  • 22:30 - 22:34
a difficult decision and asked a friend for a priesthood blessing.
  • 22:34 - 22:37
He asked what the Lord had already told me,
  • 22:37 - 22:40
and I admitted that I could feel the presence of the Spirit,
  • 22:40 - 22:43
but I couldn't discern specific revelation.
  • 22:43 - 22:47
He then asked if I had ever asked the Lord to teach me
  • 22:47 - 22:50
what it felt like when He was speaking to me.
  • 22:50 - 22:52
    Well, I hadn't.
  • 22:52 - 22:58
But that night, I began to ask the Lord to teach me the language of revelation.
  • 22:58 - 23:01
    That was 40 years ago.
  • 23:01 - 23:06
And over time, I have come to know that what President Boyd K. Packer taught is true.
  • 23:06 - 23:09
That ''if all you know is what you can see with
  • 23:09 - 23:13
your natural eyes and hear with your natural ears,
  • 23:13 - 23:17
then you will not know very much."
  • 23:17 - 23:24
Seekers have certain habits that are key to learning to communicate with God.
  • 23:24 - 23:27
For starters, they engage in the wrestle,
  • 23:27 - 23:29
    meaning they work at it.
  • 23:29 - 23:31
They immerse themselves regularly in the scriptures
  • 23:31 - 23:35
because the scriptures are the textbook for the Lord's language.
  • 23:35 - 23:39
They also work to be increasingly pure—
  • 23:39 - 23:41
    pure in their heart and thoughts;
  • 23:41 - 23:42
    pure in what they say,
  • 23:42 - 23:45
    watch, read, and listen to.
  • 23:45 - 23:48
    Purity invites the Spirit.
  • 23:48 - 23:52
    And then, pure seekers listen.
  • 23:52 - 23:57
One of my former institute students periodically turns off everything electronic.
  • 23:57 - 24:00
    TV off, music off,
  • 24:00 - 24:03
phone off, computer off, iPad off.
  • 24:03 - 24:08
She says, "I like to let the Lord know, I'm listening."
  • 24:08 - 24:11
As you cultivate these spiritual habits,
  • 24:11 - 24:14
there are two questions—actually more than that—
  • 24:14 - 24:17
but there are at least two questions that will help open the heavens.
  • 24:17 - 24:22
First, ask the Lord to teach you what it feels and sounds like for
  • 24:22 - 24:29
you when He is speaking to you via the Holy Ghost, and then watch how He tutors you.
  • 24:29 - 24:34
And second, if you've never asked the Lord how He feels about you,
  • 24:34 - 24:38
that is a great question to ask.
  • 24:38 - 24:40
    In time and over time,
  • 24:40 - 24:41
    He will tell you.
  • 24:41 - 24:47
And as He does, you'll learn more and more about speaking His language.
  • 24:47 - 24:50
When the Lord sees that you want to communicate with Him,
  • 24:50 - 24:53
    He will teach you how.
  • 24:53 - 24:58
Recently, a friend working on her PhD received an impression
  • 24:58 - 25:02
during a Relief Society Conference to shift the focus of her dissertation.
  • 25:02 - 25:05
She also felt prompted during that conference to go
  • 25:05 - 25:09
directly to the temple to ask the Lord further questions.
  • 25:09 - 25:11
    She said, "While there,
  • 25:11 - 25:15
I was told how to make this new focus work and how I
  • 25:15 - 25:19
could be both academically unbiased and spiritually honest.
  • 25:19 - 25:23
I occasionally receive clear words from the Spirit," she said,
  • 25:23 - 25:26
"but never have I been given such clear instructions.
  • 25:26 - 25:29
The task ahead feels incredibly difficult,
  • 25:29 - 25:34
but I know what direction to go and that the Lord expects it of me,
  • 25:34 - 25:37
and that makes all the difference."
  • 25:37 - 25:44
Receiving revelation is the key to receiving answers to our questions.
  • 25:44 - 25:49
Joseph Smith promised that "even the least Saint may
  • 25:49 - 25:55
know all things as fast as he is able to bear them."
  • 25:55 - 25:59
My dear friends, make no mistake about it.
  • 25:59 - 26:02
We are here now because we're supposed to be here now,
  • 26:02 - 26:06
and we each have a mission to fulfill.
  • 26:06 - 26:08
    Part of that mission
  • 26:08 - 26:16
—a really important part of that mission—is to stand as witnesses of truth.
  • 26:16 - 26:19
And that means we must receive a witness that Jesus is
  • 26:19 - 26:24
the Christ and that His gospel has been restored.
  • 26:24 - 26:27
    I invite you to decide
  • 26:27 - 26:32
today that you will pay the price to wrestle with difficult questions,
  • 26:32 - 26:35
to become lifetime seekers of truth,
  • 26:35 - 26:39
to learn to speak the Lord's language,
  • 26:39 - 26:45
and to receive a witness of Jesus Christ and the restoration of His gospel.
  • 26:45 - 26:46
    If you will,
  • 26:46 - 26:51
you will have the privilege of helping prepare the Earth for His return.
  • 26:51 - 26:58
You'll be able to defend the faith because of your ever increasing faith.
  • 26:58 - 27:01
The Savior is going to come again.
  • 27:01 - 27:05
May we stand for Him and with Him.
  • 27:05 - 27:08
I testify that God is our Father,
  • 27:08 - 27:11
    that Jesus is the Christ.
  • 27:11 - 27:12
    This is His church,
  • 27:12 - 27:17
it has been restored, and it is filled with His power,
  • 27:17 - 27:22
and if we want to communicate with heaven and receive answers to our questions,
  • 27:22 - 27:26
I testify the heavens will open, and we can learn
  • 27:26 - 27:31
and stand as witnesses in the name of Jesus Christ,
  • 27:31 - 27:40
    amen. (MUSIC)
