Lightbeam for Firefox
-
0:03 - 0:07This morning, I checked 4 web sites as I do every day
-
0:07 - 0:11I look at my surfing conditions in the area, I check local news,
-
0:11 - 0:16a look at national news, and I looked a little bit of the tech website that I go to every day
-
0:16 - 0:18by the time I finish my cup of cofe
-
0:18 - 0:22I actually interacted with over a hundred and twenty different companies
-
0:22 - 0:26I checked 4 web sites, 120 companies.
-
0:26 - 0:29Very few people understand that,
-
0:29 - 0:32very few people recognize that the interactions they
have online -
0:32 - 0:38are far more expansive than just the web sites that they think they're visiting each day.
-
0:38 - 0:41And so we built Lightbeam to help each one of us understand
-
0:41 - 0:45what tracking is occurring, and what kind of information we're sending out
-
0:45 - 0:46in our daily lives
-
0:46 - 0:50it's a Firefox add-on that provides users a view
-
0:50 - 0:53into all of their online interactions.
-
0:53 - 0:56Lightbeam is part of a much larger mission.
-
0:56 - 0:58We build Firefox for the same reason,
-
0:58 - 1:01so that when you use Firefox,
-
1:01 - 1:03you have a base level of protection,
-
1:03 - 1:06a base level of flexibility,
-
1:06 - 1:08and a base level of figuring out what's going on
-
1:08 - 1:11and making some changes if you should want to.
-
1:11 - 1:14Not only do you have the content that the publisher is making available,
-
1:14 - 1:18but now you have like buttons and tweet this.
-
1:18 - 1:21Each one of those elements that the page is loaded for you
-
1:21 - 1:24is being provided by a different company,
-
1:24 - 1:28and so in that one moment that you see that website
-
1:28 - 1:32all those other companies are also seeing YOU at that site.
-
1:32 - 1:35We see Lightbeam as both a teaching tool
-
1:35 - 1:37for the people who use it,
-
1:37 - 1:39and also a learning tool for all of us.
-
1:39 - 1:41When we take back that curtain,
-
1:41 - 1:45and we expose kinds of all the interactions that users have.
-
1:45 - 1:47It's not necessarily good or bad,
-
1:47 - 1:50I think the bad that we're focusing on here
-
1:50 - 1:53is the lack of awareness, the lack of understanding.
-
1:53 - 1:55The first step in any of these types of issues
-
1:55 - 1:58is understanding all those different companies you're interacting with.
-
1:58 - 2:01It really is a Wizard of Oz moment to kind of see
-
2:01 - 2:07that behind-the-scenes true functioning of how the web operates.
