Can you solve the locker riddle? - Lisa Winer
-
0:07 - 0:10Your rich, eccentric uncle
just passed away, -
0:10 - 0:17and you and your 99 nasty relatives have
been invited to the reading of his will. -
0:17 - 0:19He wanted to leave
all of his money to you, -
0:19 - 0:25but he knew that if he did,
your relatives would pester you forever. -
0:25 - 0:27So he is banking on the fact
-
0:27 - 0:33that he taught you everything
you need to know about riddles. -
0:33 - 0:36Your uncle left the following
note in his will: -
0:36 - 0:38"I have created a puzzle.
-
0:38 - 0:42If all 100 of you answer it together,
you will share the money evenly. -
0:42 - 0:46However, if you are the first to find
the pattern and solve the problem -
0:46 - 0:49without going through all of the leg work,
-
0:49 - 0:53you will get the entire inheritance
all to yourself. -
0:53 - 0:54Good luck."
-
0:54 - 0:59The lawyer takes you and your 99 relatives
to a secret room in the mansion -
0:59 - 1:02that contains 100 lockers,
-
1:02 - 1:04each hiding a single word.
-
1:04 - 1:05He explains:
-
1:05 - 1:10Every relative is assigned a number
from 1 to 100. -
1:10 - 1:13Heir 1 will open every locker.
-
1:13 - 1:17Heir 2 will then
close every second locker. -
1:17 - 1:21Heir 3 will change the status
of every third locker, -
1:21 - 1:24specifically if it's open,
she'll close it, -
1:24 - 1:27but if it's closed, she'll open it.
-
1:27 - 1:31This pattern will continue until
all 100 of you have gone. -
1:31 - 1:34The words in the lockers that remain
open at the end -
1:34 - 1:38will help you crack the code for the safe.
-
1:38 - 1:43Before cousin Thaddeus can even start
down the line, -
1:43 - 1:49you step forward and tell the lawyer
you know which lockers will remain open. -
1:49 - 1:51But how?
-
1:51 - 1:54Pause the video now if you want
to figure it out for yourself! -
1:54 - 1:55Answer in: 3
-
1:55 - 1:57Answer in: 2
-
1:57 - 1:58Answer in: 1
-
1:58 - 2:02The key is realizing that the number
of times a locker is touched -
2:02 - 2:06is the same as the number of factors
in the locker number. -
2:06 - 2:09For example, in locker #6,
-
2:09 - 2:11Person 1 will open it,
-
2:11 - 2:13Person 2 will close it,
-
2:13 - 2:14Person 3 will open it,
-
2:14 - 2:17and Person 6 will close it.
-
2:17 - 2:22The numbers 1, 2, 3, and 6
are the factors of 6. -
2:22 - 2:25So when a locker has an even number
of factors -
2:25 - 2:27it will remain closed,
-
2:27 - 2:29and when it has an odd number of factors,
-
2:29 - 2:31it will remain open.
-
2:31 - 2:34Most of the lockers
have an even number of factors, -
2:34 - 2:38which makes sense because factors
naturally pair up. -
2:38 - 2:41In fact, the only lockers that have
an odd number of factors -
2:41 - 2:44are perfect squares
-
2:44 - 2:49because those have one factor that when
multiplied by itself equals the number. -
2:49 - 2:51For Locker 9, 1 will open it,
-
2:51 - 2:533 will close,
-
2:53 - 2:55and 9 will open it.
-
2:55 - 2:573 x 3 = 9,
-
2:57 - 2:59but the 3 can only be counted once.
-
2:59 - 3:05Therefore, every locker that is
a perfect square will remain open. -
3:05 - 3:07You know that these ten lockers
are the solution, -
3:07 - 3:11so you open them immediately
and read the words inside: -
3:11 - 3:17"The code is the first five lockers
touched only twice." -
3:17 - 3:22You realize that the only lockers
touched twice have to be prime numbers -
3:22 - 3:24since each only has two factors:
-
3:24 - 3:271 and itself.
-
3:27 - 3:31So the code is 2-3-5-7-11.
-
3:31 - 3:33The lawyer brings you to the safe,
-
3:33 - 3:35and you claim your inheritance.
-
3:35 - 3:39Too bad your relatives were always
too busy being nasty to each other -
3:39 - 3:41to pay attention
to your eccentric uncle's riddles.
