Farming with Conservation Agriculture in Kenya
-
0:01 - 0:03[Music]
-
0:20 - 0:23Conventional farming is so tiresome,
-
0:23 - 0:25it needs a lot of labor,
-
0:25 - 0:27a lot of work has to be done in the farm
-
0:27 - 0:29unlike conservation agriculture.
-
0:29 - 0:33I started conservation agriculture
after training -
0:33 - 0:36where we were trained by master
-
0:36 - 0:38trainers who were trained by FAO.
-
0:38 - 0:42I had 56 farmers, they all started
-
0:42 - 0:44conservation agriculture
in their farms. -
0:44 - 0:46The jab planter is so good.
It is very quick. -
0:46 - 0:48I normally adjust it to the point where
-
0:48 - 0:51if I need two seeds,
two seeds are released -
0:51 - 0:54and 0.5 grams of fertilizer
-
0:54 - 0:56is released at the same time.
-
0:56 - 0:59I use the shallow weeder
because it disturbs -
0:59 - 1:03the soil less and it shaves all
-
1:03 - 1:06the small weeds which are growing.
-
1:06 - 1:08In minimum tillage, the matter
-
1:08 - 1:11is to conserve moisture in the soil.
-
1:11 - 1:14I planted three kilograms
of Makueni beans -
1:14 - 1:17It's a local breed. I was able
-
1:17 - 1:20to get two bags. Conservation agriculture
-
1:20 - 1:24has a very big impact to me. We are able
-
1:24 - 1:26to have food throughout the year,
-
1:26 - 1:29I'm able to pay school fees
for my children, -
1:29 - 1:33and I'm also able to pay that land.
-
1:34 - 1:36[Music]
-
1:37 - 1:41Using conservation agriculture,
-
1:41 - 1:46the yields have more than quadrupled
over time -
1:46 - 1:49and we expect this to rise
-
1:49 - 1:53as the mulch level is continuously
built up, -
1:53 - 1:57because it's only
with the build-up of mulch -
1:57 - 1:59and the minimum tillage that we'll be able
-
1:59 - 2:02to utilize adequately well
-
2:02 - 2:05the minimal moisture available.
-
2:06 - 2:09Our grandfathers used to farm here,
-
2:09 - 2:12same land, and they would clear
-
2:12 - 2:14everything that remained.
-
2:14 - 2:15We would harvest
-
2:15 - 2:18and let the animals graze
on the same land -
2:18 - 2:20and they would clear
everything that remained. -
2:20 - 2:22The soil would then become infertile.
-
2:22 - 2:24If I don't maintain
conservation agriculture -
2:24 - 2:27and restore the soil's fertility,
I'll get nothing from the farm. -
2:27 - 2:29I learned that a hard pan had formed.
-
2:40 - 2:43Once the hard pan was broken
-
2:43 - 2:45my farm improved.
-
2:45 - 2:49I used animal manure and when I planted
-
2:49 - 2:51the produce was much better too.
-
2:51 - 2:54People in the village began to appreciate
-
2:54 - 2:57conservation agriculture.
-
2:57 - 3:02We sell our cowpeas
at the aggregation store as a group. -
3:02 - 3:05The market prices are much better
-
3:05 - 3:09when the produce is aggregated.
-
3:09 - 3:14It is important to combine our produce.
-
3:14 - 3:17We've been taught by FAO
-
3:17 - 3:19that here in Makueni,
-
3:19 - 3:25we have to use our intelligence and our
intelligence is conservation agriculture. -
3:25 - 3:26[Music]
-
3:33 - 3:37A while back farmers were farming
-
3:37 - 3:39using the old method
-
3:39 - 3:41and the harvest was quite low.
-
3:41 - 3:43Using conservation agriculture,
-
3:43 - 3:45the farmers were taught how to farm
-
3:45 - 3:47using conservation agriculture
-
3:47 - 3:49and were brought hybrid soya
-
3:49 - 3:51and sunflower seeds.
-
3:51 - 3:53We have a few products.
-
3:53 - 3:55At the factory we make
-
3:55 - 3:59roasted soya drink.
-
3:59 - 4:02It is fast-moving because people love it.
-
4:02 - 4:03We also have another product of soya.
-
4:03 - 4:07Soya cake is a by-product
of pressing the oil. -
4:07 - 4:10Then we have another product of soya,
-
4:10 - 4:12which is soya oil.
-
4:12 - 4:13We also have sunflower oil,
-
4:13 - 4:17cold-pressed sunflower oil.
-
4:17 - 4:20We produce it without using any chemicals
-
4:20 - 4:23unlike the commercial ones.
-
4:23 - 4:25Once the oil is pressed,
-
4:25 - 4:27there is a by-product
-
4:27 - 4:30known as the sunflower cake.
-
4:30 - 4:34That sunflower cake is in such high demand
-
4:34 - 4:35that we can't even meet it.
-
4:35 - 4:38In that regard I'd say
-
4:38 - 4:40it has really helped my business,
-
4:40 - 4:43as well as gaining a lot of knowledge
-
4:43 - 4:45[Music]
