The Mission Blue connection | Amy Novogratz | TEDxGreatPacificGarbagePatch
-
0:26 - 0:30We're here today to address
one of the most pressing issues we face: -
0:30 - 0:34the health of our oceans
and the plastics that contaminate them, -
0:34 - 0:35the impact on marine life,
-
0:35 - 0:41and the hazards they face,
the hazards that we all face. -
0:43 - 0:47As a member of the TED community,
I've witnessed the power of collaboration. -
0:47 - 0:49It's through gatherings like this
-
0:49 - 0:53that unite us and help us hackle
the most critical challenges. -
0:53 - 0:57Indeed, together, we actually
can make magic happen. -
0:59 - 1:04As the director at the TED Prize,
it's my job, and also, really my privilege -
1:04 - 1:09to bring people together
and put them behind big ideas. -
1:09 - 1:11To give you a little context:
-
1:11 - 1:15the TED Prize was born out
of the TED conference. -
1:15 - 1:16It's the vision
-
1:16 - 1:20of the leading entrepreneurs,
innovators, and entertainers -
1:20 - 1:24to change the world one wish at a time.
-
1:24 - 1:31The winner is awarded 100,000 dollars
and a wish to change the world. -
1:34 - 1:37They are chosen because of the difference
they've already made -
1:37 - 1:42and really their ability to inspire
this community and catalyze them to act. -
1:42 - 1:46In 2009, Dr. Sylvia Earle
won the TED Prize -
1:48 - 1:52because of her lifelong commitment
to saving the oceans. -
1:52 - 1:57Sylvia was already a hero to many,
and her wish was to ignite public support -
1:57 - 2:01to create a global network
of marine protected areas -
2:01 - 2:03in order to save and restore the ocean.
-
2:03 - 2:06As a part of her wish, I participated
-
2:06 - 2:09on the Mission Blue voyage
to the Galapagos, -
2:09 - 2:13made up of technology innovators,
conservationists, entrepreneurs, -
2:13 - 2:17actors, and artists who were
all there for one reason: -
2:17 - 2:19protecting our seas.
-
2:28 - 2:33You can imagine there was
a lot of intelligence, passion, and energy -
2:33 - 2:35on board of that one vessel.
-
2:35 - 2:39And one of those people was Dianna Cohen
-
2:39 - 2:43the co-founder
of the Plastic Pollution Coalition. -
2:43 - 2:46And Dianna really made us all aware
of the consequences of plastic -
2:46 - 2:49and inspired us to act.
-
2:49 - 2:53It's nothing short of heartbreaking
to be out there on the sea, -
2:54 - 2:58one of the most beautiful
and vital resources on our planet, -
2:58 - 3:01and to realize the scope
of plastic pollution -
3:01 - 3:05and its impact on marine life
and on our own health. -
3:05 - 3:08Proving the positive power
of the TED community, -
3:08 - 3:12many of us got off that boat,
and we simply refuse to use plastic, -
3:12 - 3:16and some made generous commitments
to help spread this message. -
3:16 - 3:18The TED prize originated
-
3:18 - 3:21because we wanted to take
all of the inspiration, the energy, -
3:21 - 3:25that sense of possibility
that you feel while experiencing TED, -
3:25 - 3:29and put it behind big ideas
in order to really make an impact. -
3:36 - 3:42So for me, it's been amazing to see
what Sylvia's wish has spawned -
3:42 - 3:47so many initiatives
and so many generous commitments. -
3:47 - 3:49What started with Sylvia
making a wish at TED -
3:49 - 3:52lead to 100 of us
getting on board of a boat -
3:52 - 3:55and working together to figure out
a solution to save the ocean, -
3:55 - 3:59and that lead to Diana Cohen
and the Plastic Pollution Coalition -
3:59 - 4:00producing this event.
-
4:00 - 4:03And then, with all of you in the room,
and so many of you watching online, -
4:03 - 4:06there is a real potential
for countless of other acts -
4:06 - 4:09that will help make this
a healthier planet. -
4:10 - 4:14You are at the forefront of this movement
to get plastics out of the water, -
4:14 - 4:18and it's with your support
that we will see real change. -
4:18 - 4:19It's an honor to be here today,
-
4:19 - 4:20and I want to thank you
-
4:20 - 4:25for your leadership that will lead
to a healthier planet and create a world -
4:25 - 4:29where our children and where
their children will be able to thrive. -
4:29 - 4:30Thank you.
-
4:30 - 4:32(Applause)
