The hidden meanings of yin and yang - John Bellaimey

  • Not Synced
You might have seen this symbol before,
  • Not Synced
whether it's as a temporary tattoo
  • Not Synced
    or at a Chinese temple.
  • Not Synced
    It's called the yin-yang symbol.
  • Not Synced
    It comes from Taoism,
  • Not Synced
    a religion born in China
  • Not Synced
and it has far more meaning than you probably realize.
  • Not Synced
The yin is the dark swirl,
  • Not Synced
and the yang is the light one,
  • Not Synced
and each side has a dot of the opposite color,
  • Not Synced
which gives a clue to the meaning of yin and yang.
  • Not Synced
Everything contains the seed of its opposite.
  • Not Synced
Darth Vadar has the seed of goodness,
  • Not Synced
and Luke has the potential to follow his father
  • Not Synced
    to the dark side.
  • Not Synced
    Like Luke and his father,
  • Not Synced
yin and yang are not total opposites,
  • Not Synced
they are relative to each other.
  • Not Synced
Taoists believe that the universe is made up
  • Not Synced
    of energies, vibrations, and matter,
  • Not Synced
    which behave differently
  • Not Synced
    in different contexts.
  • Not Synced
Something can be yin or yang
  • Not Synced
    depending on,
  • Not Synced
well, depending on lots of things.
  • Not Synced
So, while wheat that's growing is yang,
  • Not Synced
when it's being reaped, it's yin.
  • Not Synced
    A wave's crest is yang,
  • Not Synced
    and the trough is yin.
  • Not Synced
Villages on the sunny side of a valley in China
  • Not Synced
have names like Liuyang or Shiyang,
  • Not Synced
    but on the shady side,
  • Not Synced
for example of the Yangtze River Valley,
  • Not Synced
    there's Jiangyin.
  • Not Synced
The brake is yin to the gas pedal's yang.
  • Not Synced
    An eggshell is yang,
  • Not Synced
    the egg inside is yin.
  • Not Synced
    You think you're getting it?
  • Not Synced
    Yang is harder,
  • Not Synced
    stronger,
  • Not Synced
    brighter,
  • Not Synced
    and faster,
  • Not Synced
but one can turn into the other
  • Not Synced
or are two sides of the same coin.
  • Not Synced
    The sunbeams are yang
  • Not Synced
    in comparison to the shadows.
  • Not Synced
    The pitch is yang,
  • Not Synced
    the catch is yin.
  • Not Synced
    The yang starts an action,
  • Not Synced
    and the yin receives it,
  • Not Synced
    completes it.
  • Not Synced
Yin is the inside space of a cup,
  • Not Synced
it wouldn't be a cup without it.
  • Not Synced
    Yang is the cup.
  • Not Synced
The coffee's heat, however, is yang,
  • Not Synced
    and its blackness is yin.
  • Not Synced
    Yang goes berserk sometimes,
  • Not Synced
but there's some very powerful yins, too,
  • Not Synced
if they don't quite go berserk.
  • Not Synced
Yin is the darker swirl, the female,
  • Not Synced
but there is a white dot in it.
  • Not Synced
And yang is the lighter, the male,
  • Not Synced
but it has a black dot.
  • Not Synced
Water flowing calmly in a river is yin,
  • Not Synced
but when it goes over the waterfall,
  • Not Synced
    it's very yang.
  • Not Synced
    Toothpicks are yin
  • Not Synced
    compared with a telephone pole.
  • Not Synced
The back of a person is more yin
  • Not Synced
    than the front.
  • Not Synced
The top of a person is the yang end.
  • Not Synced
Taoism teaches that there is a power in the universe.
  • Not Synced
It's higher, deeper, and truer than any other force.
  • Not Synced
    They call it the Tao.
  • Not Synced
    It means the way.
  • Not Synced
Like the force in Star Wars,
  • Not Synced
    the Tao has two sides.
  • Not Synced
Unlike other religions where the higher power is all good,
  • Not Synced
and perhaps has an all-evil rival,
  • Not Synced
Taoism teaches that we need to learn
  • Not Synced
    from both yin and yang.
  • Not Synced
And unlike religions with gods that are personal,
  • Not Synced
the higher power in Taoism is not.
  • Not Synced
Taoists believe that living in harmony with the way,
  • Not Synced
a person will not have to fight
  • Not Synced
    against the universe's natural flow.
  • Not Synced
    So, for example, listen more,
  • Not Synced
    argue less.
  • Not Synced
Be ready to back up or undo something,
  • Not Synced
and you will make even faster progress.
  • Not Synced
Don't worry about being the best,
  • Not Synced
    be who you are.
  • Not Synced
    Live simply.
  • Not Synced
Complications take you away from the Tao.
  • Not Synced
"The wise person is flexible," Taoists say.
  • Not Synced
    Learning to use the Tao
  • Not Synced
is what Taoism is all about,
  • Not Synced
and that's why you should know
  • Not Synced
    your yin from your yang.

The ubiquitous yin-yang symbol holds its roots in Taoism/Daoism, a Chinese religion and philosophy. The yin, the dark swirl, is associated with shadows, femininity, and the trough of a wave; the yang, the light swirl, represents brightness, passion and growth. John Bellaimey explains why we all contain the spirit of yin and of yang -- and how we can achieve a balance of both in our lives.
