We need to give people the possibility to experience | Kirsi Hyttinen | TEDxOtaniemi
-
0:13 - 0:15Good afternoon everybody.
-
0:15 - 0:21I was actually invited
to give a speech about my PhD. -
0:22 - 0:25I asked those who invited me,
-
0:25 - 0:29"Are you really sure you want me
to talk about my PhD?" -
0:29 - 0:30They said, "Yes."
-
0:30 - 0:34I was like, "Do you want it
to be interesting?" -
0:34 - 0:37They said, "Yes, yes we do."
-
0:38 - 0:42I was like, "Let me think again."
-
0:42 - 0:46I can tell you though
that working on a PhD is not so exciting. -
0:46 - 0:49It's a lot of studying,
it's a lot of reading, -
0:49 - 0:51it's a lot of writing,
-
0:51 - 0:55and lately, it's a lot of time
spent with my laptop. -
0:55 - 1:02So today, I'm going to talk
about some issues behind my PhD, -
1:03 - 1:10and how to use online learning tools
for higher education in fragile areas. -
1:10 - 1:14I'm going to talk about
current learning technologies -
1:15 - 1:20- especially if we have
good Internet access - -
1:20 - 1:24those smart, good tools
that we are using on a daily basis, -
1:24 - 1:28and about how they could be
used more effectively -
1:28 - 1:31in fragile areas for conflict prevention.
-
1:32 - 1:34Let's start with a couple
of stories and pictures. -
1:35 - 1:39What do you see in this picture here?
-
1:40 - 1:43Do you see a kid? A child?
-
1:43 - 1:47You surely see somebody swimming.
-
1:47 - 1:49Do you see this as a learning experience
-
1:50 - 1:54for somebody who's for the first time
under water in the swimming pool? -
1:55 - 1:56Maybe.
-
1:57 - 2:01At the same time,
I see a little kid who's scared -
2:01 - 2:03because that's something new for him.
-
2:03 - 2:06The kid is keeping
his eyes open all the time, -
2:06 - 2:09because he doesn't know
what is going to happen next. -
2:09 - 2:10No one really told him
-
2:10 - 2:12that he should use swimming goggles
-
2:12 - 2:15when he's swimming.
-
2:17 - 2:20Let's go to the next one;
what about this picture? -
2:21 - 2:24We see children again, happy ones.
-
2:26 - 2:30They're maybe enjoying their school day
as being part of their education. -
2:31 - 2:34Do you see leaders? Future leaders maybe?
-
2:35 - 2:39Because those are going to be the kids
who are going to be educated. -
2:40 - 2:43These are kids that are smart.
-
2:43 - 2:47They maybe make some new innovations
for the Cleantech. -
2:47 - 2:50Those might be the kids
-
2:50 - 2:57who will actually find out answers
for Europe's migration challenges. -
2:57 - 3:03Maybe, we'll see migration from Europe
to these countries as well, in the future. -
3:04 - 3:06If you didn't see it
like this, why is that? -
3:08 - 3:12Is it because they come
from poorer backgrounds, -
3:13 - 3:21or maybe because they don't have
access to electricity and education? -
3:23 - 3:24Think about that. Maybe that's why,
-
3:25 - 3:29The truth of the matter
is that we're surrounded -
3:29 - 3:34by conflict and violence
in these affected areas -
3:35 - 3:39and more and more people,
especially children and kids, -
3:39 - 3:42are affected by this.
-
3:42 - 3:45The political situation
is a little bit uncertain, -
3:47 - 3:49and the future doesn't seem so bright.
-
3:50 - 3:52I know that people
are working hard to help, -
3:52 - 3:55they're really trying to support
these countries and their people, -
3:56 - 3:59find out a way to educate them.
-
3:59 - 4:05find out a way to bring them
clean water or food, in the future. -
4:06 - 4:09But the facts I've been
commenting on are not so bright, -
4:09 - 4:16so I've been thinking
that we should fill in these gaps somehow, -
4:16 - 4:22we should figure out smarter solutions
to tackle these future challenges. -
4:23 - 4:29A smart man, Nelson Mandela, said
that education is the most powerful weapon -
4:29 - 4:33we can actually use
to change the world in the future. -
4:33 - 4:34Why is it so?
-
4:34 - 4:38People in our society, on a daily basis,
-
4:38 - 4:42go to school, enjoy
education, get educated, -
4:43 - 4:44We have our goals,
-
4:44 - 4:48and orientation to the world of work,
-
4:49 - 4:52but we can also empower
societies through education. -
4:53 - 4:59And this could also be
in the future a solution -
4:59 - 5:04to conflicts and crises in fragile areas,
-
5:04 - 5:11and one of the weapons or ways
out of extreme poverty. -
5:14 - 5:19Like I said, I'm going to talk
about online learning tools, -
5:19 - 5:22and then we jump into your experiences.
-
5:22 - 5:27I am sure that all of us
have our experiences -
5:27 - 5:30with learning management systems
-
5:30 - 5:34as part of our school days,
as part of our university days, -
5:34 - 5:36maybe as part of our work days.
-
5:36 - 5:39Everyone has experienced them
in one way or another, -
5:40 - 5:44and I've heard about
a lot of challenges, as well. -
5:44 - 5:47There are always some log-in challenges
- you cannot get access - -
5:48 - 5:52but at the same time, these systems
are a very good tool for sharing documents -
5:53 - 5:57storing them, collecting data,
or having a discussion. -
5:58 - 6:02They also bring communities
around a certain system at the same time. -
6:02 - 6:06The challenge seem to be
that those are complex systems. -
6:06 - 6:10People need access to education,
like we do have, which is a good thing. -
6:11 - 6:15Meanwhile, those learning
systems also need -
6:15 - 6:18somebody who is facilitating them
on a regular basis. -
6:18 - 6:20But when you have this feeling
-
6:20 - 6:25- when you need to hand in your essay,
or return your working hours -
6:26 - 6:29no matter if it is a school or work day -
-
6:30 - 6:33that you have a problem logging in,
-
6:33 - 6:35you need to call somebody,
you need to email somebody. -
6:36 - 6:39and it can take hours, maybe days,
to get the right information back. -
6:40 - 6:42Hopefully, it is faster than that.
-
6:42 - 6:44So there's a complexity issue
-
6:44 - 6:48at the core of the learning management
systems that we are currently using. -
6:49 - 6:55Despite that, we seem to be motivated
to use our mobile devices. -
6:56 - 7:00I see here some people I can recognize.
-
7:00 - 7:04We use to scroll on Twitter,
-
7:04 - 7:08we like to check our Facebook status
and talk with our friends on Facebook. -
7:09 - 7:14It's very easy to do so
and a fast way to get access to videos. -
7:16 - 7:18You want to spend time with [inaudible];
-
7:18 - 7:21you maybe use Dropbox or whatever.
-
7:22 - 7:25You are motivated
to use these online learning tools. -
7:26 - 7:28Actually, I call them
online learning tools -
7:28 - 7:30because you're learning
from them all the time. -
7:31 - 7:33At the same time,
-
7:33 - 7:37I think that motivation is
key in the learning process itself. -
7:37 - 7:41It's much better to be motivated
to use technology, -
7:41 - 7:45it's much better to use the technology
that you already know. -
7:45 - 7:47And at the same time,
-
7:47 - 7:52these are the tools we currently use
on a daily basis, globally. -
7:55 - 8:00So this is the question
I introduced in the beginning, -
8:00 - 8:02"Are we maybe looking for something else
-
8:02 - 8:06to tackle challenges that are globally
present in fragile and conflict areas? -
8:07 - 8:13Should we maybe be matching
these two things, ICT and good education. -
8:13 - 8:17to open up these opportunities
for kids and children, -
8:17 - 8:19and higher education?
-
8:19 - 8:23Especially now, when mobile devices
are used more than ever before? -
8:24 - 8:26Maybe these could also be the answers
-
8:26 - 8:29on how to tackle these challenges
in the future. -
8:29 - 8:33Because in the end, I still think
that despite complexity -
8:33 - 8:36- we've lots of complex issues
in the world - -
8:36 - 8:39it seems that the right answers
might be simpler: -
8:40 - 8:43somebody should talk to this kid
-
8:43 - 8:47and tell him it's much more comfortable
to wear swimming goggles -
8:47 - 8:51to avoid his eyes getting so red.
-
8:51 - 8:53Thank you.
-
8:53 - 8:54(Applause)
