State of Mozilla: Johnathan Nightingale ''How Firefox is continuing to break new ground''
-
0:05 - 0:11We should stop pretending that there are discrete islands of Firefox that exist;
-
0:11 - 0:19It's not actually useful to talk about Firefox Desktop and Firefox for phone
-
0:19 - 0:22because if you look at the array of devices that are out there, that human beings
-
0:22 - 0:26are buying, that are internet connected, that they want to get Firefox on,
-
0:26 - 0:28it's a continuum.
-
0:28 - 0:32We built Firefox and it succeeded, not beyond our dreams because our dreams
-
0:32 - 0:35were pretty gigantic - certainly right to the edge of them and
-
0:35 - 0:38I feel pretty good about that, and now hundreds of millions
-
0:38 - 0:41of people trust us everyday, and I feel pretty good about that
-
0:41 - 0:45and it's a responsibility that a lot of us take very seriously.
-
0:45 - 0:54Our job is to get that Firefox means something broader than it's form factor;
-
0:54 - 0:59that there's a set of things that make Firefox what it is;
-
0:59 - 1:02and we need to start from that. We need to, to think globally
-
1:02 - 1:06and then act locally. We need to think about what it is to be Firefox and
-
1:06 - 1:10then apply it to each particular platform and both halves of that
-
1:10 - 1:13are important. We shouldn't be designing features in isolation for
-
1:13 - 1:17desktop or mobile or tablets, we should be thinking about what it is, what it means
-
1:17 - 1:22across the entire Firefox spectrum and then, just as important,
-
1:22 - 1:26we should understand how that applies to each form factor.
-
1:26 - 1:34And this is not easy. Iteration is how we move the web forward day by day, right
-
1:34 - 1:38like a lot of the time, the way to prove the platform is to fix the crappy little
-
1:38 - 1:41bugs that get in the way of it being truly excellent.
-
1:41 - 1:45And we've got to do that, by all means. Because every time we decide
-
1:45 - 1:47one of those things is important, we do it.
-
1:47 - 1:52When our products individually are great, we feel pretty good about that
-
1:52 - 1:58and the PlayStore shows it; but when our products combine into a universe saving force
-
1:58 - 2:01[audience laughter]
-
2:01 - 2:03purely miraculous things happen.
