-
0:15 - 0:16Thank you, Remo.
-
0:16 - 0:18That was probably more information
than you needed. -
0:18 - 0:21Yes, I did fly in this morning and
it's fantastic to be here. -
0:22 - 0:26I've always wanted to come to Sydney, and
it took Remo and TEDx to get me here. -
0:26 - 0:27So, thank you Remo.
-
0:27 - 0:31We launched this little experiment at TED
just over a year ago called TEDx -
0:32 - 0:35where x equals
independently organized events. -
0:35 - 0:40And it gives anybody, anywhere in the world
the opportunity to host a TED-like event. -
0:41 - 0:45Now, the idea for TEDx came
from a number of different places. -
0:45 - 0:47Up until about 4 years ago,
-
0:47 - 0:51TED was a small exclusive conference
that very few people had been to. -
0:52 - 0:54Remo had been.
He'd been coming to for 20 years. -
0:54 - 0:57But, very few people
had been to the TED conference. -
0:57 - 0:59And 4 years ago, we put
TED Talks online for free. -
1:00 - 1:04And over 250 million people
have seen TED talks to date, -
1:04 - 1:06and this has really transformed
the TED brand. -
1:07 - 1:11As a result, more and more people
were coming up to us and requesting -
1:11 - 1:15if they could host an offical TED confernce
in their city or country, -
1:15 - 1:18and the TED team is a tiny team
and this idea was very hard to scale, -
1:19 - 1:21and, finally, we at TED
really do believe -
1:21 - 1:24that sometimes it's better
to view TED talks in a group situation -
1:24 - 1:26where you can have
a conversation around them -
1:26 - 1:29rather than in a solitary way
in front of your computer. -
1:29 - 1:31So, it was really
the convergence of these ideas -
1:31 - 1:33out of which
the TEDx concept emerged. -
1:35 - 1:39So, as I said TEDx launched
about a year ago, just over a year ago, -
1:39 - 1:43I just wanted to paint a brief picture
of what's transpired over the last year. -
1:44 - 1:46We've had about
500 TEDx events worldwide. -
1:46 - 1:48We have over 500 more
planned for this year. -
1:49 - 1:52About a hundred of those have been
on university campuses, and -
1:52 - 1:56another hundred-plus planned
on university campuses for this year. -
1:57 - 2:01We've had about 40 TEDx events
that will be oriented towards kids -
2:01 - 2:03between now
and the end of this year. -
2:04 - 2:08And, these events have differed greatly
in size, shape and format. -
2:08 - 2:11We have had everything
from a small little TEDx event -
2:11 - 2:15that happened in one of the largest
shanty towns in the world, TEDxKibera -
2:15 - 2:17where the organizer
put a sheet on the wall -
2:17 - 2:21and projected some TED talks and
invited some speakers in from the local community. -
2:22 - 2:25To a series of very ambitious events
like TEDxSydney today, -
2:25 - 2:28which could almost be a day at TED.
-
2:28 - 2:31To an event that I actually
just came from two days ago -
2:31 - 2:33that happened
under the Great Wall of China -
2:33 - 2:38and in this ancient setting under the stars,
and this was truly remarkable. -
2:38 - 2:41To an event that's happening
later this year on November 20th -
2:41 - 2:45and we just announced that at TEDxTokyo,
we going to have a TEDxYouth day -
2:45 - 2:51where a whole series of TEDx events
will happen over the span of 24 hours -
2:51 - 2:54that are geared for and towards
children and youth. -
2:55 - 2:57And so people come,
and they come to TEDx -
2:57 - 3:00and they hear these amazing speakers
and they have remarkable conversations, -
3:00 - 3:02and they often say to me
"Now what?" -
3:03 - 3:06And, what I'd love to encourage you all to do
is go back into your communities, -
3:06 - 3:07into under-privileged
neighborhoods, -
3:07 - 3:09into schools and
host your own little TEDx events. -
3:09 - 3:13They don't have to be as ambitious as this,
they don't have to have live speakers, -
3:13 - 3:16You can just show some TED talks,
inspire some people, -
3:16 - 3:19have a conversation around them,
and help us spread ideas. -
3:21 - 3:25And so, in closing, it has been
an amazing journey, the last few months. -
3:26 - 3:30And we at TED are awed and inspired
by it and we're not sure where it is going, -
3:30 - 3:32but we believe
it will be transformative -
3:32 - 3:34and it'll be thanks to you,
TEDxSydney community, -
3:35 - 3:37and other communities around the world
that I hope make it so. -
3:38 - 3:41So, in closing, I just wanted to say.
I've known Remo for 20 years, -
3:41 - 3:43he's been coming
to TED for 20 years. -
3:44 - 3:46And I was really excited when he said
he'd sign on to do this TEDxSydney. -
3:47 - 3:50I just found out from the forum, that
there is going to be another one next year. -
3:51 - 3:54So, next year I promise to come back
for more than 24 hours. -
3:54 - 3:55Thank you.
-
3:55 - 4:00(Applause)

Again, lots of mistakes in spelling, punctuation, misheard and omitted words. Please look back over the changes I've made and take note. I don't know whether the problem is that your English isn't really good enough for you to be creating transcripts in English - in which case I encourage you to focus instead on translating talks into your own native language, or whether it's just that you need to be more careful and proofread your work closely before submitting it. If this is the case, I recommend that instead of submitting it as soon as you're done, you leave it for a day or two, then come back to it with a fresh eye and try to fix all the mistakes.
I should not be having to make this many adjustments to a video that has reached the approval stage. Thanks for your understanding!
