Wellness Central: Cold & Flu
-
0:00 - 0:04>> [Background Music] The last time
I got the flu, I wasn't able to go -
0:04 - 0:05to class and missed a lot of work.
-
0:05 - 0:10>> The last time I got a bad cold or
a flu was actually just last week. -
0:10 - 0:14And I was on one of my long days, so I
missed a ton of class during that time. -
0:14 - 0:20So I sort of had to work extra hard just
to make up all the material that I missed. -
0:20 - 0:22When I was sick, I couldn't even leave the bed.
-
0:22 - 0:28So it's not actually attending the lecture,
but also I could barely read when I was sick. -
0:28 - 0:33>> It did affect me as a student
because I would fall far behind. -
0:33 - 0:38Like, they would give me my work to do at
home, but, still, when you're not feeling well, -
0:38 - 0:42you kind of don't have, like, the
capability of doing your work. -
0:42 - 0:45>> The last time I had a cold, I had a
lot of trouble concentrating in class -
0:45 - 0:48because I constantly wanted to blow my nose.
-
0:49 - 0:55>> I haven't had the flu in I don't know how
long, probably because I drink good, pure water, -
0:56 - 1:01exercise, and I eat good, pure food.
-
1:02 - 1:05>> I definitely caught a cold
or flu from being at the school. -
1:05 - 1:06But it's just the biggest thing.
-
1:06 - 1:11Everyone just starts getting sick
and everyone sneezing, coughing, -
1:11 - 1:14touching things, always on the computer.
-
1:14 - 1:16So I don't know how often those get wiped down.
-
1:16 - 1:21>> I think I was kind of lazy with hand-washing
because I would like touch doorknobs -
1:21 - 1:24or like the elevator buttons, and
then I would just eat with my hands. -
1:24 - 1:28Sometimes I would just have
food lying flat on the table. -
1:28 - 1:32And that's probably how I got sick I think.
-
1:32 - 1:36>> The last time I was sick, I would
say I caught it from my classmates. -
1:36 - 1:43>> People who get the flu will pass it
on to an average of seven other people. -
1:43 - 1:47That means that seven people you're
in contact with will get the flu. -
1:48 - 1:51So if you do get the flu, take
precautions to protect those around you -
1:51 - 1:56and consider getting the flu
vaccine earlier in the season. -
1:56 - 1:59>> Increase your protein and probiotic intake.
-
1:59 - 2:02This will help keep those
disease-fighting microbes in our bodies -
2:02 - 2:05in tip-top shape during cold and flu season.
-
2:05 - 2:12Probiotic beneficial microbes are kind of
fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, -
2:12 - 2:17sauerkraut, miso, natto,
kombucha, and sourdough bread. -
2:17 - 2:21>> It's actually interesting humans don't
produce vitamin C. And that's how we kind -
2:21 - 2:25of have that sort of link with our closest
relative, which is like chimpanzees -
2:25 - 2:26because they have that same error.
-
2:26 - 2:28It's actually written in our DNA.
-
2:28 - 2:31We have a gene that produces
vitamin C, but it's broken. -
2:31 - 2:33And chimpanzees have that same mistake.
-
2:34 - 2:35So it's a flaw that we both share.
-
2:35 - 2:38So it's important for us because
we also don't have that gene. -
2:38 - 2:40We need to have foods that
sort of supplement that. -
2:40 - 2:44Oranges or like guava, Kiwis, or red peppers.
-
2:44 - 2:47Kale and parsley work pretty good too.
-
2:47 - 2:51Things like that just gives us
vitamin C to sort of fix that lack -
2:51 - 2:52that we have in our genetic code.
-
2:52 - 2:57>> Eating good, pure food and getting
plenty of sleep and good exercise. -
2:59 - 3:03>> Regular physical activity keeps cold and flu
away because it strengthens your immune system. -
3:03 - 3:07And we also know it's a great mood booster.
-
3:08 - 3:12[ Music ]
