A printable, flexible, organic solar cell

    but I wanted to make a point.

    Let's say my left shoe corresponds
    to [a] sustainable footprint,
  • Not Synced
    meaning we humans consume
    less natural resources
  • Not Synced
    than our planet can regenerate,
  • Not Synced
    and emit less carbon dioxide
    than our forests and ocean can reabsorb.
  • Not Synced
    That's a stable and healthy condition.
  • Not Synced
    Today's situation
    is more [like] my other shoe.
  • Not Synced
    It's way oversized.
  • Not Synced
    On the second of August in 2017,
  • Not Synced
    we have already consumed
    all resources our planet can regenerate
  • Not Synced
    this year.
  • Not Synced
    This is like spending all your money
    until the eighteenth of a month,
  • Not Synced
    and then needing a credit from the bank
    for the rest of the time.
  • Not Synced
    For sure you can do this
    for some months in a row,
  • Not Synced
    but if you don't change your behavior,
  • Not Synced
    soon or later you will
    run into big problems.
  • Not Synced
    We all know the devastating effects
    of this excessive exploitation.
  • Not Synced
    Global warming,
  • Not Synced
    rising of the sea levels,
  • Not Synced
    melting of the glaciers and polar ice,
  • Not Synced
    increasingly extreme climate patterns
  • Not Synced
    and more.
  • Not Synced
    The enormity of this problem
    really frustrates me.
  • Not Synced
    What frustrates me even more
    is that there are solutions to this,
  • Not Synced
    but we keep doing things
    like we always did.
  • Not Synced
    Today I want to share with you
  • Not Synced
    how a new solar technology can contribute
  • Not Synced
    to [the] sustainable future of buildings.
  • Not Synced
    Buildings consume about 40 percent
    of our total energy demand,
  • Not Synced
    so tackling this consumption
    would reduce our climate emissions.
  • Not Synced
    A building designed along
    sustainable principles
  • Not Synced
    can produce all the power
    it needs by itself.
  • Not Synced
    To achieve this you first have to reduce
    the consumption as much as possible
  • Not Synced
    by using well-insulated walls
    or windows for instance.
  • Not Synced
    These technologies
    are commercially available.
  • Not Synced
    Then you need energy
    for warm water and heating.
  • Not Synced
    You can get this in a renewable
    way from the sun,
  • Not Synced
    through solar thermal installations
  • Not Synced
    or from the ground and air
    with heat pumps.
  • Not Synced
    All of these technologies are available.
  • Not Synced
    Then you are left
    with the need for electricity.
  • Not Synced
    In principle,
  • Not Synced
    there are several ways
    to get renewable electricity,
  • Not Synced
    but how many buildings do you know
  • Not Synced
    which have a windmill on the roof,
  • Not Synced
    or a water power plant in the garden?
  • Not Synced
    Probably not so many
  • Not Synced
    because usually it doesn't make sense.
  • Not Synced
    But the sun provides abundant
    energy to our roofs and façades.
  • Not Synced
    The potential to harvest this energy
    on our building's surface is enormous.
  • Not Synced
    Let's take Europe as an example.
  • Not Synced
    If you would utilize all areas which have
    a nice orientation to the sun
  • Not Synced
    and they're not overly shaded,
  • Not Synced
    the power generated
    by photovoltaics
  • Not Synced
    would correspond to about 30 percent
    of our total energy demand,
  • Not Synced
    but today's photovoltaics
    have some issues.
  • Not Synced
    They do offer a good
    cost-performance ratio,
  • Not Synced
    but they aren't really flexible
    in terms of their design
  • Not Synced
    and this makes aesthetics a challenge.
  • Not Synced
    People often imaging pictures like this
  • Not Synced
    when thinking about
    solar cells on buildings.
  • Not Synced
    This may work for solar farms,
  • Not Synced
    but when you think of buildings,
  • Not Synced
    of streets,
  • Not Synced
    of architecture,
  • Not Synced
    aesthetics does matter.
  • Not Synced
    This is the reason why we don't see
    many solar cells on buildings today.
  • Not Synced
    They just don't match.
  • Not Synced
    Our team is working on a totally
    different solar cell technology.
  • Not Synced
    It's just called organic photovoltaics,
  • Not Synced
    or OPV.
  • Not Synced
    The term organic describes
  • Not Synced
    that the material used
    for light absorption
  • Not Synced
    and charge transport
  • Not Synced
    are mainly based on the element carbon,
  • Not Synced
    and not on metals.
  • Not Synced
    We utilize the mixture of a polymer,
  • Not Synced
    which is set up by different
    repeating units,
  • Not Synced
    like the pearls in a pearl chain,
  • Not Synced
    and a small molecule which has
    the shape of a football
  • Not Synced
    and is called fullerene.
  • Not Synced
    These two compounds are mixed
    and dissolved to become an ink,
  • Not Synced
    and like ink,
  • Not Synced
    they can be printed with simple
    printing techniques
  • Not Synced
    like slot-die coating
  • Not Synced
    in a continuous roll-to-roll process
    on flexible substrates.
  • Not Synced
    The resulting thin later
  • Not Synced
    is the active layer absorbing
    the energy of the sun.
  • Not Synced
    This active layer is extremely effective.
  • Not Synced
    You only need a layer thickness
    of 0.2 micrometers
  • Not Synced
    to absorb the energy of the sun.
  • Not Synced
    This is 100 times thinner
    than a human hair.
  • Not Synced
    To give you another example,
  • Not Synced
    take one kilogram of the basic polymer
  • Not Synced
    and use it to formulate the active ink.
  • Not Synced
    With this amount of ink,
  • Not Synced
    you can print a solar cell
    the size of a complete football field.
  • Not Synced
    So OPV is extremely material efficient,
  • Not Synced
    which I think is a crucial thing
    when talking about sustainability.
  • Not Synced
    After the printing process,
  • Not Synced
    you can have a solar module
  • Not Synced
    which can look like this ...
  • Not Synced
    it looks a bit like a plastic foil,
  • Not Synced
    and actually has many of its features.
  • Not Synced
    It's lightweight ...
  • Not Synced
    it's bendable ...
  • Not Synced
    and it's semi-transparent.
  • Not Synced
    But it can harvest [the] energy
    of the sun outdoors
  • Not Synced
    and also of this indoor light,
  • Not Synced
    as you can see with this small,
    illuminated LED.
  • Not Synced
    You can use it in its plastic form
  • Not Synced
    and take advantage of its low weight
    and it's bendability.
  • Not Synced
    The first is important when thinking
    about buildings in warmer regions.
  • Not Synced
    Here, the roofs are not designed
    to bear additionally heavy loads.
  • Not Synced
    They aren't designed for snow
    in winter for instance,
  • Not Synced
    so heavy silicon solar cells
    cannot be used for light harvesting,
  • Not Synced
    but these lightweight solar foils
    are very well suited.
  • Not Synced
    The bendability is important
  • Not Synced
    if you want to combine the solar cell
    with membrane architecture.
  • Not Synced
    Imagine the cells of the Sydney
    Opera as power plants.
  • Not Synced
    Alternatively, you can
    combine the solar foils
  • Not Synced
    with conventional construction
    materials like glass.
  • Not Synced
    Many glass [façade] elements
    contain a [foil] anyways
  • Not Synced
    to create laminated safety glass.
  • Not Synced
    It's not a big deal to add
    a second foil in the production process,
  • Not Synced
    but then the façade element
    contains the solar cell
  • Not Synced
    and can produce electricity.
  • Not Synced
    Besides looking nice,
  • Not Synced
    these integrated solar cells come along
    with two more important benefits.
  • Not Synced
    Do you remember the solar cells
    attached the roof I showed before?
  • Not Synced
    In this case,
  • Not Synced
    we install the roof first
  • Not Synced
    and as a second layer,
  • Not Synced
    the solar cell.
  • Not Synced
    This is adding on [the] installation cost.
  • Not Synced
    In the case of integrated solar cells,
  • Not Synced
    at the site of construction,
  • Not Synced
    only one element is installed,
  • Not Synced
    being at the same time
    the envelope of the building
  • Not Synced
    and the solar cell.
  • Not Synced
    Besides saving on your installation costs,
  • Not Synced
    this also saves resources
  • Not Synced
    because the two functions
    are combined into one element.
  • Not Synced
    Earlier I talked about optics.
  • Not Synced
    I really like this solar pattern,
  • Not Synced
    maybe you have different taste
    or different design needs.
  • Not Synced
    No problem.
  • Not Synced
    With the printing process,
  • Not Synced
    the solar cell can change
    its shape and design very easily.
  • Not Synced
    This will give the flexibility
    to architects,
  • Not Synced
    to planners and building owners
  • Not Synced
    to integrate this electricty-producing
    technology as they wish.
  • Not Synced
    I want to stress that this is not
    just happening in the labs.
  • Not Synced
    It will take seven more years
    to get to mass adoption,
  • Not Synced
    but we are at the edge
    of commercialization,
  • Not Synced
    meaning there are several companies
    out there with production lines.
  • Not Synced
    They are scaling up their capacities
  • Not Synced
    and so are we with the inks.
  • Not Synced
    This smaller footprint
    is much more comfortable.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    It is the right size,
  • Not Synced
    the right scale.
  • Not Synced
    We have to come back to the right scale
    when it comes to energy consumption.
  • Not Synced
    And making buildings carbon neutral
    is an important part here.
  • Not Synced
    In Europe,
  • Not Synced
    we have the goal to decarbonize
    our buildings [stock] until 2050.
  • Not Synced
    I hope organic photovoltaics
    will be a big part of this.

    Here are a couple of examples.
  • Not Synced
    This is the first commercial installation
    of fully printed organic solar cells.
  • Not Synced
    Commercial means that the solar cells
    were printed on industrial equipment.
  • Not Synced
    The so-called solar trees are part
    of the German pavilion
  • Not Synced
    at the World Expo in Milan in 2015.
  • Not Synced
    They provided shading during the day
  • Not Synced
    and electricity for
    the lighting in evening.
  • Not Synced
    You may wonder why this hexagonal shape
    was chosen for the solar cells.
  • Not Synced
    Easy answer:
  • Not Synced
    the architects wanted to have
    a specific shading pattern on the floor
  • Not Synced
    and asked for it,
  • Not Synced
    and then it was printed as requested.
  • Not Synced
    Being far from a real project,
  • Not Synced
    this free-form installation hooked
    the imagination of the visiting architects
  • Not Synced
    much more than we expected.
  • Not Synced
    This other application
    is closer to the projects
  • Not Synced
    and applications we are targeting.
  • Not Synced
    In an office building
    in Sao Paulo, Brazil,
  • Not Synced
    semi-transparent OPV panels
    are integrated into the glass façade,
  • Not Synced
    serving different needs.
  • Not Synced
    First, they provided shading
    for the meeting rooms behind.
  • Not Synced
    Second, the logo of the company
    is displayed in an innovative way.
  • Not Synced
    And of course electricity is produced,
  • Not Synced
    reducing the energy of the building.
  • Not Synced
    This is pointing towards a future
  • Not Synced
    where buildings are no longer
    energy consumers,
  • Not Synced
    but energy providers.
  • Not Synced
    I want to see solar cells
    seamlessly integrated
  • Not Synced
    into our building shells
  • Not Synced
    to be both resource-efficient
    and a pleasure to look at.
  • Not Synced
    For roofs, silicon solar cells
    will often continue to be a good solution,
  • Not Synced
    but to exploit the potential
    of all façades in other areas,
  • Not Synced
    such as sem-transparent areas,
  • Not Synced
    curved surfaces
  • Not Synced
    and shadings,
  • Not Synced
    I believe organic photovoltaics
    can offer a significant contribution
  • Not Synced
    and they can be made in any form
    architects and planners will want them to.
  • Not Synced
