Finding solutions amidst Mali’s enduring conflict

0:03 - 0:08In 2012, violence erupted in northern Mali,
affecting the sub-region. -
0:10 - 0:13Fearing for their lives,

0:13 - 0:16tens of thousands were forced to flee
their homes to escape the conflict. -
0:17 - 0:19Years went by.

0:19 - 0:23A peace deal was signed in Mali,
but the fighting didn't stop. -
0:26 - 0:32Crime, terrorism, chronic droughts,
-
0:32 - 0:36and limited access to food
and medical care persist in Mali. -
0:36 - 0:40Today, significant numbers
of internally displaced Malians -
0:40 - 0:43and refugees hosted
in neighbouring countries -
0:43 - 0:45are still unable to return home.

0:45 - 0:49Roughly a quarter of refugees
live in towns and cities. -
0:49 - 0:52The farmers, herders, merchants and nomads
-
0:52 - 0:57that make up most of the remaining 75%
live in settlements. -
0:57 - 1:01UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency,
with the support of the European Union, -
1:01 - 1:05together with its partners,
provides life-saving support, -
1:05 - 1:10such as food, water, shelter

1:10 - 1:13and health facilities
to people forced to flee. -
1:13 - 1:15Safeguarding
their fundamental human rights -
1:15 - 1:19is crucial for people to be able
to build a better future. -
1:19 - 1:21But with no end to the violence in sight,

1:21 - 1:24UNHCR, with the support
of the European Union -
1:24 - 1:28leads efforts to enable displaced families
and individuals to settle -
1:28 - 1:31and make a positive contribution
in their new communities. -
1:31 - 1:35UNHCR, with the support
of the European Union and its partners -
1:35 - 1:39offer training and help them find a market
for their skills and goods, -
1:39 - 1:43while also enriching their host communities
with their experience and knowledge. -
1:43 - 1:46Offering people forced to flee
a safe place to call home -
1:46 - 1:49brings opportunities for everyone.

1:49 - 1:53Malians fleeing violence do not have to put
their lives on hold forever. -
1:53 - 1:57Given the opportunity, they can do
so much more than rely on relief -
1:57 - 2:00and wait for the conflict to resolve.

2:00 - 2:04Empowered and thriving displaced families
can be a force of change for the better. -
2:04 - 2:08Whether settling into a new community
or returning home.
