  • 0:05 - 0:07
    >> Rudine I'll never forget.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    Now there are a lot
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    of people whose names I
  • 0:09 - 0:09
    don't remember.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    I won't forget Rudine's name
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    or the impression
  • 0:13 - 0:14
that she made on my life.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    [ Music ]
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    >> The photos you are looking
  • 0:20 - 0:21
at are of a 25-year-old woman
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    who once weighed 38 pounds.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    Rudine Howard is a human
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    skeleton living
  • 0:26 - 0:29
on what she calls God's will.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    After 11 years she still
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    suffers from life-threatening
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    anorexia nervosa.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    We've been following Rudine's
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    battle to survive
  • 0:37 - 0:38
for the past four months now.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    She discussed her obsessive
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    fear of food.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    >> Still to this day I still
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    think of every calorie.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
I can tell you any calorie
  • 0:47 - 0:47
    in any food
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    because I studied the diet
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    book so much it's just
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    like instant in my brain.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
Every time I see a piece
  • 0:53 - 0:54
of food I see a calorie
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    written on it instead
  • 0:55 - 0:57
of seeing what it looks like.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    >> Yeah. So when you see an
  • 0:58 - 0:58
    apple, you see?
  • 0:59 - 0:59
    >> I see 80 calories.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    >> And you see a banana
  • 1:01 - 1:01
    you see?
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    >> A hundred calories.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    >> And you see french fries
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    and you see?
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    >> 220.
  • 1:06 - 1:06
    >> You can look
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    in the mirror now
  • 1:07 - 1:10
at 48 pounds the way you look
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    today and you can --
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    you still see yourself
  • 1:13 - 1:13
    as being fat?
  • 1:14 - 1:14
    >> Yes.
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    >> Even if you can look
  • 1:16 - 1:18
in the mirror and see yourself
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    as being a fat person,
  • 1:21 - 1:22
you have to at some --
  • 1:22 - 1:24
you have to feel your bones.
  • 1:24 - 1:24
    You have to --
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    I mean, you can feel
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    that there's no fat here.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    You can feel that.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
And so when you would feel,
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    I mean, you're --
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    it feels like holding a
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    skeleton almost.
  • 1:37 - 1:38
So when you would feel that,
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    would you still think
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    that you're fat?
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    >> To me I would be
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    because I would measure my
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    fingers around my arms,
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    and when they got bigger,
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    that's when I started
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    getting scared.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
When I could only go like this
  • 1:54 - 1:55
and I couldn't get my fingers
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    to touch, that's
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    when I would start dieting
  • 1:58 - 2:00
again, that I wouldn't let it
  • 2:00 - 2:02
go farther, but now I can see
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    because I can go
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    farther around.
  • 2:05 - 2:05
    >> A few months
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    after our conversation Rudine
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    was hospitalized still
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    fighting anorexia.
  • 2:11 - 2:11
    >> [inaudible] people still
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    saying then
  • 2:13 - 2:16
but I do not feel bad.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    >> We've been following Rudine
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    over a period of time,
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    and suddenly one day I
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    realized we are following her
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    as a news story.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    We're following her as,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    you know, a voyeur looking
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    into this anorexic life.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    We need to help her.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    She needs help.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    Like, oh, my God,
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    we're just covering
  • 2:37 - 2:37
    this story.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
This girl is going to die
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    if we don't do something.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    That was the first epiphany
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    about Rudine after sitting
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    in her house
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    for the first time.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    We have followed Rudine the
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    past four months.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
She joins us today weighing 12
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    more pounds
  • 2:53 - 2:54
than she did the day I met her
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    four months ago.
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    Rudine Howard,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
it is so difficult for me
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    to understand how you don't
  • 3:02 - 3:04
see yourself the way the rest
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    of us see you.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    >> Yes. Your brain just
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    doesn't see it.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
You're so willed to be thin
  • 3:15 - 3:17
that every time you still look
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    you still feel fat.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    >> Do you still feel fat
  • 3:20 - 3:20
    at 60?
  • 3:20 - 3:22
Do you feel fat at 60 pounds?
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    >> Truthfully, yes.
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    >> So when you --
  • 3:25 - 3:26
I heard that it was difficult
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    for you.
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    >> Very difficult.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    >> Gaining these 12 pounds
  • 3:29 - 3:30
    because it's not really what
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    you want to do.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    >> No. I --
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    it was still a fight
  • 3:33 - 3:33
    in the hospital.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    I agreed to have the
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    hyperalimentation
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    because I had kidney
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    infection, and I needed --
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    I know I needed it.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    I had to gain it
  • 3:44 - 3:45
but it's still every day was a
  • 3:45 - 3:47
fight to do it, I mean,
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    a fight inside of me.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    It was very, very hard.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    >> And so now that you know
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    that you've gained 12 pounds
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    is there somewhere
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    in your head the urge
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    to lose it?
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    >> Yes, there's still the urge
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    but I'm feeling better
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    and there's more will
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    to get better to gain.
  • 4:09 - 4:09
    >> Because don't you know
  • 4:09 - 4:10
    if you don't gain,
  • 4:10 - 4:11
    you're going --
  • 4:11 - 4:12
you're not going to be able
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    to survive?
  • 4:13 - 4:13
    >> Yes.
  • 4:13 - 4:13
    >> Yeah.
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    >> Yeah, very much so.
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    >> How did this start?
  • 4:18 - 4:19
    Because we have pictures
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    of you when you were,
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    you know, a little girl
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    growing up and, you know,
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    pictures of you.
  • 4:29 - 4:29
    >> Yes.
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    >> How -- you were about,
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    what, eight
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    or nine there; right?
  • 4:33 - 4:33
    >> Yes.
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    >> Yeah. You were pretty.
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    You were normal.
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    >> It started when I was 13.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    I had gotten overweight.
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    I went to 165 pounds.
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    I was a freshman
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    in high school.
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    And I was very --
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    I had a very low self-esteem
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    of myself so I started
  • 4:49 - 4:49
    to diet.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    When I started losing weight,
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    it wasn't fast enough.
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    So I just cut
  • 4:53 - 4:54
down to half a grapefruit a
  • 4:54 - 4:56
day and a little bit of salad
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    and Diet Coke at night.
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    Well, that still wasn't fast
  • 4:59 - 4:59
    enough so I [inaudible] just
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    half a grapefruit.
  • 5:01 - 5:01
    Well, this went
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    on for three months
  • 5:02 - 5:04
and I had lost 50 pounds then.
  • 5:05 - 5:08
And I got to the point
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    of where I just couldn't
  • 5:09 - 5:09
    even eat.
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    I just drank water
  • 5:10 - 5:11
for like two or three weeks.
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    >> When did you know
  • 5:13 - 5:13
    that you were
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    in trouble, Rudine?
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    >> When my parents brought me
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    to see a psychiatrist
  • 5:18 - 5:19
and they told them I had
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    anorexia nervosa.
  • 5:21 - 5:22
    >> And how much did you
  • 5:22 - 5:22
    weigh then?
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    >> I was about 110
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    at that time.
  • 5:25 - 5:29
And I had lost, like I said,
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    about 50-55 pounds
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    within three months.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
So he had told my parents
  • 5:33 - 5:34
that if I kept going I'd be
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    in serious, you know, danger,
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    that this is an upcoming
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    disease that many girls
  • 5:40 - 5:42
at my age are now getting.
  • 5:43 - 5:44
    >> Do you want to get better?
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    >> Oh, yes.
  • 5:46 - 5:49
I pray to God every day.
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    It's a spiritual battle inside
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    of me that I have
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    to accept myself.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
And there's a reason for me.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    God has put me here
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    for a reason.
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    >> Rudine is now 27 years old
  • 6:03 - 6:04
and she's still in the fight
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    for her life.
  • 6:05 - 6:06
    She joins us
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    by satellite today
  • 6:07 - 6:08
    from the hospital
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    where she was admitted just
  • 6:10 - 6:11
    days ago.
  • 6:11 - 6:14
So do you still see yourself
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    as fat?
  • 6:15 - 6:16
    Or are you really trying
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    to gain weight
  • 6:17 - 6:18
and your body now just won't
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    handle it?
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    >> I'm really trying
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    to gain weight.
  • 6:22 - 6:23
    It's just the body won't
  • 6:23 - 6:24
    handle it.
  • 6:25 - 6:25
    >> Rudine,
  • 6:25 - 6:26
what do you you want to say
  • 6:26 - 6:28
to all the women out there
  • 6:28 - 6:31
who are right now young girls
  • 6:31 - 6:32
where you were 14 years ago
  • 6:33 - 6:34
    starting this obsession
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    with dieting?
  • 6:36 - 6:37
    >> Don't do it.
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    Believe me I've been
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    down to 32 pounds
  • 6:44 - 6:45
and I've been in a coma
  • 6:46 - 6:49
    and I barely made it.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    Don't do it.
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    Save yourself.
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    >> Well, at the time
  • 6:58 - 7:00
    of that taping Rudine Howard
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    weighed 49 pounds.
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    Can you believe it?
  • 7:04 - 7:04
    [applause]
  • 7:04 - 7:06
And since then she's gained an
  • 7:06 - 7:08
    incredible 40 pounds.
  • 7:08 - 7:12
    Are you able to --
  • 7:12 - 7:12
    are you eating now?
  • 7:13 - 7:13
    >> Yes.
  • 7:13 - 7:14
    >> You're eating real food?
  • 7:14 - 7:14
    >> Huh-huh.
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    >> Well, this is the heaviest
  • 7:16 - 7:17
    you've been
  • 7:17 - 7:18
    or the most weight you've
  • 7:18 - 7:19
    gained, I mean,
  • 7:19 - 7:19
    because I talked
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    to you several years before
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    and you had only gained
  • 7:22 - 7:24
like 3 pounds in three years.
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    >> This is the most I've been
  • 7:25 - 7:26
    since 13.
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    >> Since 13.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    And you weigh, what, 89?
  • 7:29 - 7:29
    >> Yeah.
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    >> 89. Are you going
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    to continue to allow yourself
  • 7:32 - 7:33
    to put more weight on?
  • 7:33 - 7:34
    >> I'm going to try to, yeah.
  • 7:35 - 7:40
    [ Music ]
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    >> When you're in it,
  • 7:41 - 7:42
    when you're this way,
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    you can't see it
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    and it's so hard.
  • 7:45 - 7:46
    >> Years later
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    when Tracy Gold was
  • 7:47 - 7:48
    on with Rudine,
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    Rudine had such an impact
  • 7:51 - 7:51
    on my life
  • 7:51 - 7:54
    that there was a moment
  • 7:54 - 7:56
when Tracy is saying what you
  • 7:56 - 7:57
    need to do you need
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    to feed your brain.
  • 7:58 - 7:59
    You need to feed yourself
  • 7:59 - 7:59
    and you need
  • 7:59 - 8:00
    to nourish yourself.
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    You need to do this.
  • 8:01 - 8:03
And Rudine looks up at her
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    and she says like how?
  • 8:06 - 8:07
    >> What you can do is you can
  • 8:07 - 8:08
    make the little steps
  • 8:08 - 8:09
    to fill your mind
  • 8:09 - 8:11
so that you can fight back.
  • 8:11 - 8:12
    >> I [inaudible] do it.
  • 8:12 - 8:13
    >> Just start
  • 8:13 - 8:14
    to nourish your brain
  • 8:14 - 8:16
    so your brain can start
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    to feel life again
  • 8:18 - 8:20
and the life is so wonderful.
  • 8:20 - 8:22
We are in control of our lives
  • 8:22 - 8:23
    and our destiny.
  • 8:24 - 8:24
    >> Rudine,
  • 8:24 - 8:26
when you hear Tracy say that
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    and you see somebody who's
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    come out of it,
  • 8:29 - 8:31
does that give you a little
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    bit of light?
  • 8:34 - 8:35
    >> It does.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    I can do it.
  • 8:37 - 8:38
    >> [music] I'm telling you
  • 8:39 - 8:41
    to this day that's one
  • 8:41 - 8:42
    of the most powerful things
  • 8:42 - 8:42
    I've ever heard.
  • 8:43 - 8:44
    The little hairs
  • 8:44 - 8:46
on my arm raised and I just --
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    I was just --
  • 8:47 - 8:48
like a chill went through me
  • 8:48 - 8:51
and I thought that is it.
  • 8:52 - 8:54
    That is what everybody wants
  • 8:54 - 8:54
    to know.
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    How? That is the central
  • 8:58 - 8:59
    question in life.
  • 8:59 - 9:02
    And that moment
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    with Rudine forever changed
  • 9:04 - 9:06
    the way I approached my
  • 9:06 - 9:07
    interviewing,
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    the way I approached every
  • 9:10 - 9:11
    show, the way I looked
  • 9:11 - 9:12
    at a guest.
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    The central question is how.
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    I was so profoundly impacted
  • 9:18 - 9:19
    by that.
  • 9:20 - 9:21
    I've been doing this show
  • 9:21 - 9:22
    for 10 years,
  • 9:22 - 9:23
    and I have been touched
  • 9:23 - 9:25
    by so many incredible people
  • 9:25 - 9:26
    in that time
  • 9:26 - 9:28
but there is one special young
  • 9:28 - 9:29
    woman who I believe moved
  • 9:29 - 9:30
    us all.
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    For seven years Rudine Howard
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    struggled for her life
  • 9:34 - 9:35
    battling the devastating
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    effects of an eating disorder,
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    anorexia nervosa,
  • 9:39 - 9:41
but last Friday at 3 o'clock
  • 9:41 - 9:41
    in the morning
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    in her hospital bed Rudine
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    lost that battle.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    And so today Rudine we
  • 9:47 - 9:48
    dedicate this show to you
  • 9:48 - 9:49
    with the hope
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    that some other person,
  • 9:51 - 9:52
    young girl, young boy,
  • 9:53 - 9:54
    watching will see themselves
  • 9:54 - 9:56
    and you and stop
  • 9:56 - 9:57
    their suffering.
  • 9:57 - 9:58
    This one's for you.
  • 9:59 - 10:05
