Why do I sometimes feel a heavy weight on my heart?

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    (Half bell)
  • 0:09 - 0:25
    (Bell)
  • 0:28 - 0:38
    (French)
Why do I sometimes feel as if there is
a heavy ball on my heart?
  • 0:40 - 0:44
Why do I sometimes feel as if there is
    a great, heavy ball
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    weighing down in my heart?
  • 0:51 - 0:55
The practice of mindfulness may help
  • 0:56 - 1:07
us to find out why that feeling...
    comes...again
  • 1:07 - 1:12
Sometimes something has been transmitted to you
  • 1:12 - 1:16
by your mother, your father, your ancestors,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    some sorrow,
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    some fear,
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    some worries
  • 1:34 - 1:40
And it's good that you have encountered
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    the practice of mindfulness
  • 1:45 - 1:48
because with the practice of mindfulness
  • 1:48 - 1:51
we can help transform that for our mother,
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    for our father,
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    for our ancestors
  • 2:00 - 2:03
Because we are the continuation of
  • 2:03 - 2:05
our father, our mother, our ancestors
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    They are still in us
  • 2:06 - 2:10
with their happiness and their suffering,
  • 2:10 - 2:14
their talents and also their shortcomings
  • 2:15 - 2:19
So that feeling may be a result of...
  • 2:21 - 2:25
some worries, some fears, some anger
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    by former generations
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    We have to accept them
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    We have to accept them
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    So you practice breathing in
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    and you accept it:
  • 2:38 - 2:41
"this is a feeling of heaviness..
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    "in my chest"
  • 2:44 - 2:46
And it can be transformed by
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    the practice of mindfulness,
  • 2:48 - 2:52
by the practice of love and understanding
  • 2:54 - 2:57
And you are aware you are breathing in
  • 2:57 - 3:01
for your mother, for your father,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    for your ancestors
  • 3:05 - 3:11
And you know that the practice of smiling,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    of releasing,
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    of compassion
  • 3:15 - 3:20
    can very well transform
    that kind of sorrow,
  • 3:20 - 3:24
that kind of anxiety, that kind of fear
  • 3:24 - 3:26
And you do that out of love
  • 3:26 - 3:31
You do that for your mother,
    for your father
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    for your grandfather,
    your grandmother and so on
  • 3:38 - 3:41
Many of us feel a kind of suffering
  • 3:41 - 3:45
    that we do not understand
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    We don't understand
    why we suffer like that
  • 3:53 - 3:54
We have not created that suffering,
  • 3:54 - 3:57
the reason why it is there
  • 3:57 - 4:00
The only answer is that it has
    been transmitted to us
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    by society, by ancestors
  • 4:05 - 4:09
And we have to accept first
  • 4:10 - 4:14
    And accepting makes it easier
  • 4:15 - 4:17
And then the next step is to
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    breathe in and out mindfully
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    and smile to it
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    And realise that the practice
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    of mindfulness, concentration and insight
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    can help transform,
  • 4:34 - 4:39
    because understanding and compassion
  • 4:39 - 4:46
these are two kind of energies
that have the power to transform everything
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    It is like the sunshine
  • 4:52 - 4:57
The sunshine can melt the snow
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    and dry...
  • 5:04 - 5:08
    and help...dry the tears
  • 5:10 - 5:16
    So if we practice
    understanding suffering and compassion
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    it can help transform the
  • 5:19 - 5:22
suffering of our father, our mother in us,
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    our own suffering
  • 5:25 - 5:29
And sometimes it can be done very quickly
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    provided that you don't worry,
  • 5:32 - 5:35
that you know it can be transformed
  • 5:35 - 5:40
    And after five minutes
    of breathing, walking
  • 5:40 - 5:44
or resting, you may feel that it is gone
  • 5:46 - 5:49
And the next time when it comes,
    you do the same
  • 5:49 - 5:51
and if you continue like that,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    one day it will disappear
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    and will not come back
  • 5:59 - 6:01
But we have to keep the practice
  • 6:01 - 6:05
We need someone to remind us to practice
  • 6:06 - 6:08
That is why it is wonderful
  • 6:08 - 6:11
    to have co-practitioners
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    in our neighbourhood, our family
  • 6:16 - 6:19
Everytime we feel that, we remember to practice
  • 6:19 - 6:22
and if we do not remember to practice
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    someone else will tell us
  • 6:25 - 6:28
to go back to our in-breath and
    out-breath and practice
  • 6:33 - 6:35
Thank you for asking the question
  • 6:35 - 6:38
    It helps many people
  • 6:41 - 6:45
    (Half bell)
  • 6:45 - 6:56
    (Bell)
