Girl's Rite of Passage

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    (narrator)
Beneath White Mountain in New Mexico,
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    the Mescalero Apache Reservation
  • 0:06 - 0:09
prepares for a coming of age ritual.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    [chanting in Apache language]
  • 0:12 - 0:14
Over the span of four days,
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    13-year old Dashina Cochise
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    will pass through ancient tests
    of strength,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    endurance,
    and character,
  • 0:22 - 0:25
that will make her a woman.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
The Mescalero Apache hold the ritual
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    every fourth of July.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    It's a grueling ordeal,
    intending to prepare girls
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    for the trials of womanhood.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
-When she was a little girl,
    I knew this
  • 0:40 - 0:43
is what I wanted to have for her.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    (narrator)
    Dashina's mother, Olette, has spent
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    more than a year
preparing for this week of ceremony.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    Family members and friends
    will help her
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    feed and care
    for more than 50 guests.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    The family's most important task
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    is selecting Dashina's medicine woman.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    Zelda Yazza will instruct Dashina
  • 1:05 - 1:08
in the ways of traditional Apache
    womanhood.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    -Four ways.
    Into the back open.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    (narrator)
    The four day ceremony
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    encapsulates
    the Apache creation story.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    Dashina will move
    through the stages of life:
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    infant,
    child,
  • 1:23 - 1:28
    adolescent,
    woman,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
culminating in an all night dance
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    that will test her endurance.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
    The ritual begins with
the rising of the morning star.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    The ceremony requires Dashina
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    to live by strict rules.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
These four days mean little sleep,
  • 1:48 - 1:53
    scant food,
and the need to set aside emotion.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    Throughout the ordeal,
    she must wear
  • 1:55 - 2:00
    a face of stoic resolve.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
-I feel very excited and happy,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    even though I can't smile,
    but...
  • 2:05 - 2:08
I'll try to show it in some way.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    (narrator)
Before Dashina joins the other girls,
  • 2:11 - 2:16
she is blessed: dusted with pollen,
    the symbol of fertility.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    [chanting in Apache language]
  • 2:23 - 2:27
(narrator) The girls start their journey
    in a sacred tepee,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    built by their male relatives.
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    [high-pitched voices howling]
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    -Let's go right now;
    they're putting the tepee up.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    (narrator)
The basket is filled with pollen
  • 2:37 - 2:41
    and other ceremonial objects.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    As their ancestors did,
  • 2:43 - 2:46
the girls run toward the rising sun,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    circling the basket four times
  • 2:48 - 2:51
to mark the four stages of life.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    The fourth, and final, day
    brings Dashina
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    to the cusp of womanhood.
  • 2:59 - 3:03
She ascends the hill to pray
    to the mountain spirits
  • 3:03 - 3:05
for a long and successful life.
  • 3:05 - 3:09
    [musical chanting]
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    With darkness near,
    it's time to dance
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    beside the ceremonial fire.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    [chanting and singing]
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    Dashina and the other girls
    will dance all night long,
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    much of the time,
    hidden in the big teepee.
  • 3:24 - 3:29
    [howling, singing and chanting]
  • 3:30 - 3:35
    More than 10 hours later,
    Dashina is still dancing.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
The medicine men greet the sun,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
a signal that the final test is near.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    [rhythmic chanting]
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    The girls' faces are painted
    with white clay,
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    symbolizing the Goddess.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    On their last circuit
    around the sacred basket,
  • 3:53 - 3:57
the girls wipe away the symbolic clay.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
With the falling of the tepee,
  • 3:59 - 4:01
their rite of passage is complete.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    Dashina receives
    her Apache woman's name;
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    Morning Star Feather.
  • 4:08 - 4:12
    -Morning Star Feather?
    -Morning Star Feather.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    Everything went well;
she's just gonna be a strong woman.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    (narrator)
    Her community gathers,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    acknowledging that this girl
    has earned the right
  • 4:21 - 4:24
to live as a woman of the tribe.
  • 4:24 - 4:25
    As an Apache woman,
  • 4:25 - 4:29
    Dashina serves as a symbol
    of her culture,
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    renewing and protecting
    a way of life
  • 4:32 - 4:35
    that's in danger of vanishing.
  • 4:35 - 4:39
    [cheering]
