(Jason) Yes, so it tells us, Micah.
  • 12:00 - 12:03
(Derek) Micah, chapter 5 and verse 2.
  • 12:03 - 12:05
Alright, let's look at one other example,
  • 12:05 - 12:08
    Stephanie, in Matthew, chapter 2.
  • 12:08 - 12:10
It sounds like Matthew is just quoting
  • 12:10 - 12:11
    the Old Testament Scriptures
  • 12:11 - 12:13
    all the time, doesn't it?
  • 12:13 - 12:16
    Matthew, chapter 2, verses 17 and 18.
  • 12:16 - 12:18
(Stephanie) Alright, and I'll be reading
  • 12:18 - 12:19
from the New King James Version:
  • 12:34 - 12:35
    (Derek) So, I have
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    a question for you, Stephanie,
  • 12:37 - 12:39
and then for anyone else on the team,
  • 12:39 - 12:42
do you think sometimes prophets wrote down
  • 12:42 - 12:44
what the Lord revealed to them
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    without fully understanding
  • 12:46 - 12:51
what the full meaning of those words was?
  • 12:51 - 12:53
Or, do you think they grasped it all,
  • 12:53 - 12:54
    what do you think?
  • 12:54 - 12:56
(Stephanie) No, I think that they
  • 12:56 - 12:57
just trusted Him, and they wrote down
  • 12:57 - 12:59
what He directed them to write.
  • 12:59 - 13:01
    (Derek) Okay, yes, Jason.
  • 13:01 - 13:03
(Jason) Well, yes, because if we think
  • 13:03 - 13:04
of what we just read here,
  • 13:04 - 13:06
Jeremiah knew that there would be
  • 13:06 - 13:08
    many calamities that would fall
    on his people,
  • 13:08 - 13:10
but I don't think he actually knew
  • 13:10 - 13:12
that King Herod was going to engage
  • 13:12 - 13:15
in infanticide, where he would go
  • 13:15 - 13:16
    and destroy all the babies.
  • 13:16 - 13:17
    So, I don't think Jeremiah
  • 13:17 - 13:19
    necessarily knew every single detail
  • 13:19 - 13:22
    of what later was prophesied.
  • 13:22 - 13:24
(Derek) Yes, you want to add to that,
  • 13:24 - 13:26
    Stephanie, and then Daniel?
  • 13:26 - 13:28
    (Stephanie) I was thinking
    of other prophecies
  • 13:28 - 13:29
    in the Bible, in Daniel.
  • 13:29 - 13:32
    Daniel didn't know everything
    that was going to happen.
  • 13:32 - 13:34
    (Derek) Not with all...
  • 13:34 - 13:35
    (Stephanie) Exactly.
  • 13:35 - 13:37
(Derek) Especially in Daniel, chapter 8,
  • 13:37 - 13:40
he felt kind of sick, faint, right?
  • 13:40 - 13:41
(Stephanie) So, that's just an example
  • 13:41 - 13:43
    of, you know, the prophets
  • 13:43 - 13:44
    didn't know everything,
  • 13:44 - 13:46
but they wrote by the inspiration
  • 13:46 - 13:47
    of the Holy Spirit.
  • 13:47 - 13:48
    (Derek) Sure. Daniel?
  • 13:48 - 13:50
(Daniel) Just to add to that,
  • 13:50 - 13:51
    in Daniel, chapter 2,
  • 13:51 - 13:52
    we see the famous statue
  • 13:52 - 13:54
    of Nebuchadnezzar's dream,
  • 13:54 - 13:56
    but obviously he didn't know
  • 13:56 - 13:57
    what he was talking about,
  • 13:57 - 13:58
    the kingdoms to come;
  • 13:58 - 14:00
he only knew about Babylon at that time.
  • 14:00 - 14:01
    So, that's an example.
  • 14:01 - 14:03
    (Derek) And he didn't know
  • 14:03 - 14:04
    about the European Union
  • 14:04 - 14:06
or all of those things, right,
  • 14:06 - 14:08
    or General Berthier or...
  • 14:08 - 14:09
    So, there were things,
  • 14:09 - 14:12
    but he faithfully prophesied
  • 14:12 - 14:15
what had been revealed to him,
    is that right?
  • 14:15 - 14:17
So, I have a question, Sabina.
  • 14:17 - 14:20
Why did these later religious leaders
  • 14:20 - 14:23
who were also prophets, why did they hold
  • 14:23 - 14:25
    the Scriptures from the past
  • 14:25 - 14:28
in such high regard or high esteem?
  • 14:28 - 14:30
    (Sabina) Well, Pastor Derek,
  • 14:30 - 14:31
    I think they already understood
  • 14:31 - 14:33
that they were inspired by God.
  • 14:33 - 14:34
So, they were already carrying that
  • 14:34 - 14:37
    as being something that God
    had given to them,
  • 14:37 - 14:38
and that's why they quote them
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    just as Jesus quoted it,
  • 14:40 - 14:41
    as being inspired by God.
  • 14:41 - 14:43
    (Derek) And that claim
  • 14:43 - 14:45
    is made in Scripture, right?
  • 14:45 - 14:46
Can you think of a text
  • 14:46 - 14:48
    that talks about Scripture
  • 14:48 - 14:50
    as being inspired by God?
  • 14:50 - 14:51
    Jonathan, is there one
  • 14:51 - 14:53
    that comes to your mind?
  • 14:53 - 14:56
    (Jonathan) Yes, 2 Timothy 3:16-17...
  • 14:56 - 14:59
(Derek) Would you read that for us
    from your translation?
  • 14:59 - 15:01
(Jonathan) Sure, and I'll be reading
  • 15:01 - 15:05
    from the English Standard Version,
    and it says:
  • 15:21 - 15:23
(Derek) Thank you, that's a great example.
  • 15:23 - 15:24
    I like that translation;
  • 15:24 - 15:27
    it's God-breathed, [blowing out]
  • 15:27 - 15:30
    Anyone have another translation?
  • 15:30 - 15:33
    "All Scripture is...'?
  • 15:33 - 15:34
    (Team) "...given by inspiration..."
  • 15:34 - 15:37
(Derek) "...given by inspiration of God,"
  • 15:37 - 15:39
by the work of the Holy Spirit.
  • 15:39 - 15:41
And that's another text that speaks
  • 15:41 - 15:44
about the Holy Spirit and inspiration.
  • 15:44 - 15:46
Kim, do you remember where that's found?
  • 15:46 - 15:47
    (Kim) Um, 2 Peter.
  • 15:47 - 15:49
(Derek) Yeah, would you read that for us?
  • 15:49 - 15:52
2 Peter, chapter 1, would you read
  • 15:52 - 15:54
    verses 19 through 21?
  • 15:54 - 15:56
I always think, maybe some of you
  • 15:56 - 15:57
    are saying, "Oh, Derek,
  • 15:57 - 15:58
    I've read that before."
  • 15:58 - 16:00
    But maybe someone's hearing this
  • 16:00 - 16:01
    for the first time,
  • 16:01 - 16:03
    and they're saying, "Pastor Derek,
  • 16:03 - 16:04
    I just thought these were
  • 16:04 - 16:06
    human words about God.
  • 16:06 - 16:08
You're telling me that this was
  • 16:08 - 16:13
    actually given through the prophets,
    inspired by God."
  • 16:13 - 16:15
    How does Peter write
  • 16:15 - 16:17
    in 2 Peter, chapter 1?
  • 16:17 - 16:21
    (Kim) 2 Peter, chapter 1, verses 19 to 21.
  • 16:21 - 16:24
I'll be reading from the English
    Standard Version:
  • 16:51 - 16:53
(Derek) "As they were carried along."
  • 16:53 - 16:55
    Another translation, "as they were..."?
  • 16:55 - 16:56
    (Derek, Team) "...moved..."
  • 16:56 - 16:57
    (Derek) "...by the Holy Spirit."
  • 16:57 - 17:00
Now, if were to take a lot of time looking
  • 17:00 - 17:03
at how revelation and inspiration work,
  • 17:03 - 17:04
    there were some times
  • 17:04 - 17:06
    they heard actual words, right,
  • 17:06 - 17:07
    and they wrote them down.
  • 17:07 - 17:08
    There were other times
  • 17:08 - 17:10
that God guided in their study,
  • 17:10 - 17:12
    like Dr. Luke talked
  • 17:12 - 17:14
    to all of the eyewitnesses.
  • 17:14 - 17:16
But what they all have in common
  • 17:16 - 17:17
    is that they all say,
  • 17:17 - 17:18
"God was at work in this."
  • 17:18 - 17:20
    "God was directing this."
  • 17:20 - 17:22
And so, they hold the Scripture
  • 17:22 - 17:23
    in very high regard.
  • 17:23 - 17:25
    We certainly see that
  • 17:25 - 17:27
    in the life of Jesus.
  • 17:27 - 17:28
    And we're going to talk
  • 17:28 - 17:30
about Deuteronomy in just a minute,
  • 17:30 - 17:32
because lots of quotations will come,
  • 17:32 - 17:35
    or references, to Deuteronomy.
  • 17:35 - 17:38
    In fact, even Jesus, right?
  • 17:38 - 17:39
    When did Jesus quote
  • 17:39 - 17:41
the book of Deuteronomy most frequently,
  • 17:41 - 17:43
    Puia, do you remember?
  • 17:43 - 17:45
    When did Jesus quote
  • 17:45 - 17:49
    from Deuteronomy most frequently?
  • 17:49 - 17:49
    (Puia) I believe when He
  • 17:49 - 17:52
    faced temptation in the wilderness,
  • 17:52 - 17:54
    He quoted from Deuteronomy.
  • 17:54 - 17:55
(Derek) Yes, would you take us
  • 17:55 - 17:58
    to Matthew, chapter 4,
  • 17:58 - 18:02
and read three verses for us.
  • 18:02 - 18:04
But read them one at a time,
  • 18:04 - 18:06
and after you read the first one,
  • 18:06 - 18:08
someone call out where it's found.
  • 18:08 - 18:10
And then go to the second one
    and the third,
  • 18:10 - 18:13
starting in verse 4 of Matthew 4.
  • 18:13 - 18:15
    (Puia) And I'll be reading
  • 18:15 - 18:17
from the New King James Version:
  • 18:28 - 18:30
    (Derek) Does anybody know
    where that's found?
  • 18:30 - 18:34
    Clue: It's in Deuteronomy, right?
  • 18:34 - 18:35
    (Stephanie) 8:3.
  • 18:35 - 18:39
    (Derek) Deuteronomy, chapter 8
    and verse 3, okay.
  • 18:39 - 18:43
    The next temptation, Puia.
  • 18:43 - 18:45
    (Puia) Verse 7:
  • 18:52 - 18:54
    (Derek) And where's that found?
  • 18:54 - 18:58
    (Team) 6:16, Deuteronomy 6:16.
  • 18:58 - 19:00
(Derek) Deuteronomy 6 and verse 16.
  • 19:00 - 19:02
    I think Puia's got a chain reference
  • 19:02 - 19:03
    in his Bible, too.
  • 19:03 - 19:05
    That's helpful, isn't it?
  • 19:05 - 19:06
    Alright, and the last one
  • 19:06 - 19:09
in the temptations, verse 10, Puia.
  • 19:09 - 19:10
    (Puia) Yes, verse 10:
  • 19:21 - 19:23
(Derek) And where is that written?
  • 19:23 - 19:25
    (Team) Deuteronomy 6:13.
  • 19:25 - 19:27
    (Derek) Deuteronomy 6, verse 13.
  • 19:27 - 19:29
    So, thank you, Puia.
  • 19:29 - 19:31
    What can we learn
  • 19:31 - 19:34
    from those three satanic attacks
  • 19:34 - 19:37
and the three responses of Jesus?
  • 19:37 - 19:38
    There are several lessons
  • 19:38 - 19:39
    we could learn, Sabina?
  • 19:39 - 19:42
(Sabina) We see that both Satan and Jesus
  • 19:42 - 19:44
    are quoting from Scriptures.
  • 19:44 - 19:46
So, Satan, he also knows well
  • 19:46 - 19:47
what's written in the Word of God,
  • 19:47 - 19:50
and he attributes authority to that.
  • 19:50 - 19:51
    We see that Jesus,
  • 19:51 - 19:52
    in responding to him,
  • 19:52 - 19:54
He rebukes also with the Word of God.
  • 19:54 - 19:55
    So, both of them agree
  • 19:55 - 19:57
    that the Word of God
  • 19:57 - 19:59
    is something special, right?
  • 19:59 - 20:03
    (Derek) Unfortunately, when Satan
    quotes from Scripture
  • 20:03 - 20:04
    under the second temptation,
  • 20:04 - 20:06
    he kind of distorts it,
  • 20:06 - 20:08
    leaves something out, right?
  • 20:08 - 20:10
    People still do that today,
  • 20:10 - 20:12
    but Jesus consistently...
  • 20:12 - 20:14
What can we learn from Jesus
  • 20:14 - 20:18
    through this experience? Yes, Travis.
  • 20:18 - 20:21
(Travis) So, what I learn from here
  • 20:21 - 20:24
is that the only thing that I need
  • 20:24 - 20:27
to respond to Satan with is Scripture.
  • 20:27 - 20:29
(Derek) Oh, don't argue with him, right?
  • 20:29 - 20:30
Just bring the Word of God.
  • 20:30 - 20:33
Someone told me one time, the Word of God
  • 20:33 - 20:35
    has authority over the enemy,
  • 20:35 - 20:37
    because the Word of God isn't just here;
  • 20:37 - 20:39
    the living Word of God
  • 20:39 - 20:41
has authority over the enemy, thank you.
  • 20:41 - 20:42
    Puia, I think you also
  • 20:42 - 20:44
    had your hand raised.
  • 20:44 - 20:47
(Puia) Yes, I believe it is significant
  • 20:47 - 20:49
for us in the context of our study today
  • 20:49 - 20:52
that Jesus had a high view
  • 20:52 - 20:55
    of the book of Deuteronomy.
  • 20:55 - 20:59
He quoted that, and I think
  • 20:59 - 21:02
that's a big lesson for us today.
  • 21:02 - 21:04
If Jesus trusted the Old Testament,
  • 21:04 - 21:06
    if Jesus quoted from it
  • 21:06 - 21:08
    as a reliable source
  • 21:08 - 21:10
    of inspiration from God,
  • 21:10 - 21:12
then I think we, too, can trust
  • 21:12 - 21:14
    in the book of Deuteronomy.
  • 21:14 - 21:15
    (Derek) And the rest
  • 21:15 - 21:16
    of the Scriptures, right,
  • 21:16 - 21:18
    because all Scripture is given
  • 21:18 - 21:19
    by inspiration of God. Sabina?
  • 21:19 - 21:21
(Sabina) What I am thinking also
  • 21:21 - 21:22
is that Satan, knowing that Jesus
  • 21:22 - 21:27
attributed so high a view to Scripture,
  • 21:27 - 21:31
he tried to use, exactly, Scriptures
    to tempt Jesus.
  • 21:31 - 21:33
(Derek) Which is why we need
  • 21:33 - 21:35
to read not only the text
  • 21:35 - 21:37
    but the context, right?
  • 21:37 - 21:38
And we also need to ask
  • 21:38 - 21:40
    the same Holy Spirit
  • 21:40 - 21:43
who inspired the prophet to guide us.
  • 21:43 - 21:47
Jesus promised, John 16, verse 13,
  • 21:47 - 21:49
"When He, the Spirit of truth, is come,
  • 21:49 - 21:51
    He will guide you into..."?
  • 21:51 - 21:52
    (Derek, Team) "...all truth."
  • 21:52 - 21:54
(Derek) Now, I want to go to Matthew 22,
  • 21:54 - 21:57
    because Jesus quotes again.
  • 21:57 - 21:58
And, Daniel, if you could read
  • 21:58 - 22:01
    Matthew 22, verse 37,
  • 22:01 - 22:04
I'm beginning to wonder if Jesus
  • 22:04 - 22:07
memorized the whole book of Deuteronomy,
  • 22:07 - 22:10
    whether He just took that
    really seriously.
  • 22:10 - 22:12
Maybe other books of the Bible as well.
  • 22:12 - 22:13
    Daniel, what do you read
  • 22:13 - 22:17
in verse 37 of Matthew 22?
  • 22:17 - 22:19
    (Daniel) I'll be reading
  • 22:19 - 22:20
from the New King James Version:
  • 22:27 - 22:30
(Derek) And where is that found?
  • 22:30 - 22:32
    (Stephanie) Different places.
  • 22:32 - 22:34
    (Derek, Puia) Deuteronomy.
  • 22:34 - 22:35
    (Derek) That's right, Puia,
  • 22:35 - 22:37
    it's found in Deuteronomy again.
  • 22:37 - 22:38
You say, "Well, did Jesus quote
  • 22:38 - 22:41
from any other books besides Deuteronomy?"
  • 22:41 - 22:43
Jason, I think He did, didn't He?
  • 22:43 - 22:46
Even in verse 39 of Matthew 22,
  • 22:46 - 22:49
    what did Jesus say there?
  • 22:49 - 22:50
(Jason) The New King James Version
  • 22:50 - 22:53
    says in Matthew 22:39:
  • 22:59 - 23:02
(Derek) That is not found in Deuteronomy,
  • 23:02 - 23:04
though the principle is certainly there,
  • 23:04 - 23:06
in fact, to even love the stranger, right?
  • 23:06 - 23:08
But where is that quoted from, Jason?
  • 23:08 - 23:11
(Jason) I believe that is Leviticus,
    right before?
  • 23:11 - 23:12
    (Derek) That's right,
  • 23:12 - 23:14
    in part of the Pentateuch,
  • 23:14 - 23:15
    another book of Moses,
  • 23:15 - 23:17
    in [Leviticus], chapter 19.
  • 23:17 - 23:19
    And later, maybe while you're
    still with us,
  • 23:19 - 23:21
    could read verse 44,
  • 23:21 - 23:22
    and someone can tell us
  • 23:22 - 23:25
where Jesus is quoting from then.
  • 23:25 - 23:29
    (Jason) Alright, Matthew 22:44,
  • 23:29 - 23:31
    I believe, here,
  • 23:31 - 23:33
and this is the New King James Version:
  • 23:41 - 23:43
(Derek) And, Sabina, where is that found?
  • 23:43 - 23:44
    (Sabina) That's found in Psalms.
  • 23:44 - 23:46
(Derek) In the book of Pslams,
  • 23:46 - 23:48
which Psalm is it, do you remember?
  • 23:48 - 23:49
    (Sabina) That's 110.
  • 23:49 - 23:51
    (Derek) 110, verse 1, okay.
  • 23:51 - 23:56
What do we learn from just these few texts
    we've been reading?
  • 23:56 - 23:58
Jonathan, what did we learn here?
  • 23:58 - 23:59
And we're just looking at Jesus here,
  • 23:59 - 24:01
    a little snapshot, the temptations
  • 24:01 - 24:03
    and some interaction He's having
  • 24:03 - 24:05
    with the religious leaders.
  • 24:05 - 24:07
    (Jonathan) That Jesus had
  • 24:07 - 24:08
    a high value of Scripture,
  • 24:08 - 24:12
and that Scripture is core to us
  • 24:12 - 24:15
    charting through a spiritual life
  • 24:15 - 24:17
with any clarity in a world
  • 24:17 - 24:19
    that can be very confusing.
  • 24:19 - 24:23
So, without Scripture we are sure
    to go astray.
  • 24:23 - 24:25
(Derek) Alright, I want to build
  • 24:25 - 24:26
    on the fact that Jesus
  • 24:26 - 24:28
had a high view of Scripture. Stephanie?
  • 24:28 - 24:29
    (Stephanie) I think it was
  • 24:29 - 24:32
more than just important to Him,
    but He had memorized it;
  • 24:32 - 24:34
He had put it in His heart, so it
    came back to his mind.
  • 24:34 - 24:36
(Derek) Isn't there a text that says,
  • 24:36 - 24:39
"Your Word I have hidden in my heart..."?
  • 24:39 - 24:41
    Can someone finish that?
  • 24:41 - 24:44
(Derek, Team) "...that I might not
    sin against You."
  • 24:44 - 24:46
(Derek) And, Stephanie, He not only then
  • 24:46 - 24:49
    had a theoretical high regard
    for Scripture...
  • 24:49 - 24:51
    (Stephanie) He had an experience.
  • 24:51 - 24:52
    (Derek) He had an experience
  • 24:52 - 24:54
of hiding that Word in His heart.
  • 24:54 - 24:55
    And didn't Jesus say
  • 24:55 - 24:58
    during His earthly ministry,
  • 24:58 - 25:00
    "The Helper, the Holy Spirit,
  • 25:00 - 25:02
whom the Father will send in My name,
  • 25:02 - 25:05
He will teach you all things, and..."?
  • 25:05 - 25:08
    (Derek, Team) "...bring
    to your remembrance..."
  • 25:08 - 25:09
    (Derek) "...all the things
  • 25:09 - 25:11
that I said to you," John 14:26.
  • 25:11 - 25:15
So, He lived that, didn't He,
    in high regard.
  • 25:15 - 25:18
Well, I want to ask a question.
  • 25:18 - 25:21
    If Scripture is so important...
  • 25:21 - 25:23
    Let me get very practical,
  • 25:23 - 25:24
and then I'll ask you a time
  • 25:24 - 25:27
when God brought that to your remembrance.
  • 25:27 - 25:30
What are some ways that you have used
  • 25:30 - 25:32
to hide God's Word in your heart?
  • 25:32 - 25:35
Pastor Puia, you teach the Bible,
  • 25:35 - 25:37
what are some ways that you have found
  • 25:37 - 25:40
to really fill your mind and heart
  • 25:40 - 25:43
    with the Word of God?
  • 25:43 - 25:45
(Puia) Well, as we often sing
  • 25:45 - 25:46
    in Hope Sabbath School here,
  • 25:46 - 25:51
I like to teach my youth in the church
  • 25:51 - 25:54
songs, Scripture songs, that can help us
  • 25:54 - 25:57
remember the words in our hearts.
  • 25:57 - 25:59
    (Derek) And that's so important.
    Thank you, Puia.
  • 25:59 - 26:00
    It's not just like
  • 26:00 - 26:03
    kind of religious songs,
  • 26:03 - 26:05
but it's the Word of God put to music,
  • 26:05 - 26:08
which can help it to stay in our minds.
  • 26:08 - 26:10
I was so excited; my favorite book
  • 26:10 - 26:11
    on the life of Jesus
  • 26:11 - 26:13
is called The Desire of Ages,
  • 26:13 - 26:15
maybe many of you have seen that book
  • 26:15 - 26:17
    (if not, it's worth reading),
  • 26:17 - 26:19
    that Jesus, page 73,
  • 26:19 - 26:20
when He was a little boy,
  • 26:20 - 26:22
    walked around Nazareth,
  • 26:22 - 26:23
    Puia, did you know,
  • 26:23 - 26:25
    singing Scripture songs?
  • 26:25 - 26:27
I'm like, I got so excited,
  • 26:27 - 26:29
because there's a way that singing
  • 26:29 - 26:31
    a Scripture song fixes that
  • 26:31 - 26:33
    in your memory, right?
  • 26:33 - 26:35
Jason, what are some ways you...?
  • 26:35 - 26:37
You say, "Wow, the Bible is so important,
  • 26:37 - 26:40
the example of Jesus, I want to fix
  • 26:40 - 26:42
those words of God in my mind"?
  • 26:42 - 26:44
(Jason) So, for me, one of the best ways
  • 26:44 - 26:46
has been to actually teach the Bible,
  • 26:46 - 26:47
    leading out in Bible studies.
  • 26:47 - 26:49
And whether it's to other young adults,
  • 26:49 - 26:51
    maybe it's even to kids
  • 26:51 - 26:52
    who are younger than me,
  • 26:52 - 26:54
or even people who are older,
  • 26:54 - 26:55
    studying the Word for myself
  • 26:55 - 26:57
because as I share it and as I teach it,
  • 26:57 - 26:59
    I remember the verses
  • 26:59 - 27:00
that I had to study and look up.
  • 27:00 - 27:03
And then that puts the Word in my heart.
  • 27:03 - 27:05
    (Derek) Alright. You can do
  • 27:05 - 27:07
Scripture memory cards; you can listen
  • 27:07 - 27:08
    to the Bible on your phone;
  • 27:08 - 27:10
    there are lots of things
    you can do, right?
  • 27:10 - 27:13
But what we have is this high regard
  • 27:13 - 27:15
    for the Word of God
  • 27:15 - 27:17
    as being inspired by God,
  • 27:17 - 27:19
    God-breathed by the Holy Spirit,
  • 27:19 - 27:20
    and wanting to take
  • 27:20 - 27:23
that Word of God very seriously.
  • 27:23 - 27:25
    Well, with that in mind,
  • 27:25 - 27:26
    we want to go back
  • 27:26 - 27:29
    and talk about Deuteronomy.
  • 27:29 - 27:32
    It's hard to believe this,
  • 27:32 - 27:37
but the book of Deuteronomy was lost.
  • 27:37 - 27:40
It was lost until the time
  • 27:40 - 27:44
of, well, let's read the story, shall we?
  • 27:44 - 27:47
    The story of King Josiah,
  • 27:47 - 27:52
and 2 Kings is going to [have] the story.
  • 27:52 - 27:54
I want someone just to read verse 11.
  • 27:54 - 27:55
    Kim, would you read
  • 27:55 - 27:58
    2 Kings 22 and verse 11,
  • 27:58 - 27:59
and we'll kind of pick up the story.
  • 27:59 - 28:01
And then someone can give us
  • 28:01 - 28:03
    some historical background.
  • 28:03 - 28:04
    (Kim) Sure, I'll be reading
  • 28:04 - 28:06
    from the English Standard Version:
  • 28:11 - 28:13
(Derek) Now, can someone give me
  • 28:13 - 28:16
an approximate time frame for this time
  • 28:16 - 28:19
in the life of young King Josiah?
  • 28:19 - 28:21
    Approximately. Jason?
  • 28:21 - 28:24
    (Jason) It's around 620, or so, B.C.
  • 28:24 - 28:26
(Derek) So, that would be what?
  • 28:26 - 28:28
Eighteen years before the time of Daniel?
  • 28:28 - 28:30
    I mean, it's pretty close
  • 28:30 - 28:31
to the time of Daniel, right?
  • 28:31 - 28:34
    Daniel probably wasn't born yet,
  • 28:34 - 28:35
    because he probably wasn't
  • 28:35 - 28:37
    even 18 years old,
  • 28:37 - 28:38
or it would have been about the time
  • 28:38 - 28:40
    he was born, alright?
  • 28:40 - 28:43
And, at that time, they find
  • 28:43 - 28:44
    this Book of the Law,
  • 28:44 - 28:48
which is a reference to Deuteronomy.
  • 28:48 - 28:53
And why does King Josiah tear his robes?
  • 28:53 - 28:56
    Anybody know? Yes, Jonathan.
  • 28:56 - 29:00
That sounds like not very good stewardship
    of your robes.
  • 29:00 - 29:03
Why did he tear his robes, Jonathan?
  • 29:03 - 29:06
(Jonathan) I'm guessing, but when I
  • 29:06 - 29:08
    imagine Josiah reading
  • 29:08 - 29:10
some specific portions of that book
  • 29:10 - 29:12
that seem to be specifically talking
  • 29:12 - 29:14
    to his generation...
  • 29:14 - 29:17
I mean, when I look at chapters 28
    through 30
  • 29:17 - 29:19
and just see how it talks
  • 29:19 - 29:21
    exactly where they were
  • 29:21 - 29:23
and how they would be rejecting
  • 29:23 - 29:25
    prophet after prophet,
  • 29:25 - 29:27
and how God would be on the borders
  • 29:27 - 29:29
of kicking them out to another land
  • 29:29 - 29:32
and had already handed out the Israelites,
  • 29:32 - 29:35
it would have torn his heart.
  • 29:35 - 29:37
Like, "Wow, why are we here?
  • 29:37 - 29:39
    Why haven't we repented?"
  • 29:39 - 29:41
So, I think it was directly
    to their situation.
  • 29:41 - 29:44
(Derek) Yeah, so how many centuries
  • 29:44 - 29:46
    have passed since the book
  • 29:46 - 29:48
    of Deuteronomy was written?
  • 29:48 - 29:52
    You said, around 622-23 B.C.,
  • 29:52 - 29:54
how many centuries have passed, Puia,
  • 29:54 - 29:58
since the book of Deuteronomy was written?
  • 29:58 - 30:01
    (Puia) Well, I would guess
  • 30:01 - 30:03
    about at least seven centuries,
  • 30:03 - 30:06
    or close to eight centuries.
  • 30:06 - 30:07
    (Derek) The safe answer is,
  • 30:07 - 30:10
"A lot of centuries have passed," right?
  • 30:10 - 30:13
    How could they possibly lose
  • 30:13 - 30:16
one of the books of the Pentateuch,
  • 30:16 - 30:19
one of the books of Moses the prophet?!
  • 30:19 - 30:23
They lost it; how could that happen,
    Sabina?
  • 30:23 - 30:25
(Sabina) Well, we know from Scriptures
  • 30:25 - 30:29
that they had gotten lost in apostasy.
  • 30:29 - 30:31
So, unfortunately, you know, by turning
  • 30:31 - 30:33
to other gods and other practices,
  • 30:33 - 30:35
    they definitely forgot.
  • 30:35 - 30:38
    Maybe Deuteronomy was already there
  • 30:38 - 30:40
    somewhere, hidden, the scroll.
  • 30:40 - 30:41
If someone had turned to it,
  • 30:41 - 30:42
    they would find it.
  • 30:42 - 30:45
It's not that it was absolutely incapable
    to be found,
  • 30:45 - 30:48
but they were just not looking at it.
  • 30:48 - 30:50
(Derek) It's easy to judge them, isn't it?
  • 30:50 - 30:51
But I'm wondering if there are
  • 30:51 - 30:53
    professed Christians today who have
  • 30:53 - 30:57
a Bible, but they don't know where it is.
  • 30:57 - 31:00
    Is that possible?
  • 31:00 - 31:02
They say, "Oh, do you read the Bible?"
    "Yes."
  • 31:02 - 31:03
    "Do you have one?"
  • 31:03 - 31:08
"Um, somewhere, I don't know where it is."
  • 31:08 - 31:11
    Is that any worse?
  • 31:11 - 31:15
That's just as bad, isn't it,
    as this situation.
  • 31:15 - 31:19
Finally, they find...I mean, it's like,
  • 31:19 - 31:20
    "Hey, what's this?" buried
  • 31:20 - 31:26
under all of the memorabilia, right?
  • 31:26 - 31:28
    "Oh, what's this?"
  • 31:28 - 31:30
Let's keep reading, Jason, if you would,
  • 31:30 - 31:35
in 2 Kings but now in chapter 23.
  • 31:35 - 31:37
If you'd read the first three verses.
  • 31:37 - 31:38
    Let's see how this...
  • 31:38 - 31:39
    We're going to find out
  • 31:39 - 31:41
that Josiah is a godly king.
  • 31:41 - 31:44
He's seeking God with all his heart.
  • 31:44 - 31:46
    Let's see how he responds
  • 31:46 - 31:49
when this book we're studying, right,
  • 31:49 - 31:51
    Present Truth in Deuteronomy,
  • 31:51 - 31:53
    this becomes present truth,
  • 31:53 - 31:54
I think, as was just pointed out,
  • 31:54 - 31:57
    for his generation, right?
  • 31:57 - 31:59
    Verses 1 through 3.
  • 31:59 - 32:01
(Jason) The New King James Version says,
  • 32:01 - 32:05
    in 2 Kings, chapter 23,
    verses 1 through 3:
  • 32:59 - 33:00
    (Derek) What do you think
  • 33:00 - 33:01
    about this young king?
  • 33:01 - 33:02
    I don't know exactly
  • 33:02 - 33:03
how old he is at this time.
  • 33:03 - 33:05
    Maybe someone can tell me.
  • 33:05 - 33:06
I know he was very young
  • 33:06 - 33:08
    when he began his reign.
  • 33:08 - 33:09
    Travis, what do you think
  • 33:09 - 33:10
    about the way he acts
  • 33:10 - 33:13
    when this book is found?
  • 33:13 - 33:15
(Travis) Well, I want to comment on that,
  • 33:15 - 33:17
but also, I believe it was
  • 33:17 - 33:20
the eighteenth year of his reign,
  • 33:20 - 33:22
and he began to reign at 8 years old,
  • 33:22 - 33:25
so he would have been 26,
  • 33:25 - 33:27
    right, at the time.
  • 33:27 - 33:29
    But this thing was hidden
  • 33:29 - 33:31
in the house of the Lord,
  • 33:31 - 33:35
and it took him 18 years to find it...
  • 33:35 - 33:36
    (Derek) Wow, that's
  • 33:36 - 33:37
    a solemn thought, isn't it?
  • 33:37 - 33:39
Puia, I don't want you to tell me
  • 33:39 - 33:41
on global television how old you are,
  • 33:41 - 33:44
but I think you're pretty close to the age
  • 33:44 - 33:46
of Josiah when he found the book.
  • 33:46 - 33:48
    What are your thoughts, Puia,
  • 33:48 - 33:50
    about the way he reacted
  • 33:50 - 33:53
when he found this sacred text?
  • 33:53 - 33:54
    (Puia) Right, as Jonathan
  • 33:54 - 33:55
    pointed out earlier,
  • 33:55 - 33:57
    in tearing his clothes
  • 33:57 - 34:00
    I believe significantly portrays
  • 34:00 - 34:05
that he was sad to hear about the way
  • 34:05 - 34:07
that his people have been moving away
  • 34:07 - 34:08
from the book of the law.
  • 34:08 - 34:11
So, I believe, for a young person
  • 34:11 - 34:14
such as Josiah at 26, somewhere
    around there,
  • 34:14 - 34:17
    I believe his reaction showed
  • 34:17 - 34:21
that he had a deep fear for God,
    a love for God.
  • 34:21 - 34:24
(Derek) So, let's not judge people
  • 34:24 - 34:27
    just because they don't have
    the Word of God.
  • 34:27 - 34:29
    Maybe they're very sincere,
  • 34:29 - 34:31
but it's been hidden from them.
  • 34:31 - 34:33
    Is that possible? Sabina?
  • 34:33 - 34:34
(Sabina) It is, and I'm thinking
  • 34:34 - 34:36
    especially here, that it says
  • 34:36 - 34:39
    that he brought the priests
    and the prophets
  • 34:39 - 34:41
    along with all the people.
  • 34:41 - 34:43
So, imagine this situation, you have
  • 34:43 - 34:46
this book of Deuteronomy, or scroll,
  • 34:46 - 34:48
potentially maybe it's the entire Torah,
  • 34:48 - 34:49
    we are not very sure,
  • 34:49 - 34:50
    but at least the book
  • 34:50 - 34:52
    of Deuteronomy was there, hidden
  • 34:52 - 34:55
in the house of the Lord for so much time.
  • 34:55 - 34:56
And he needs to bring the priests
  • 34:56 - 34:59
and the prophets to read together.
  • 34:59 - 35:01
So, it's hard for me even to picture
  • 35:01 - 35:03
    that happening nowadays, right,
  • 35:03 - 35:04
    a priest and a prophet
  • 35:04 - 35:06
    that are not reading Scripture.
  • 35:06 - 35:08
    (Derek) Not reading the Word.
  • 35:08 - 35:11
    Lets' keep reading; Daniel,
  • 35:11 - 35:12
if you could read for us
  • 35:12 - 35:15
    back in 2 Kings 23.
  • 35:15 - 35:16
    We read verses 1 to 3;
  • 35:16 - 35:20
if you could read on with verses 4 to 8,
  • 35:20 - 35:22
let's see how young King Josiah,
  • 35:22 - 35:26
now Puia tells us, or Travis told us,
  • 35:26 - 35:28
I think, about 26 years old,
  • 35:28 - 35:30
    so he's a young adult.
  • 35:30 - 35:31
But God's going to use him
  • 35:31 - 35:32
    in a powerful way.
  • 35:32 - 35:33
    Let's see how the story
  • 35:33 - 35:36
    unfolds, verses 4 through 8.
  • 35:36 - 35:37
    (Daniel) I'll be reading
  • 35:37 - 35:38
from the New King James Version:
  • 36:56 - 36:57
    (Derek) Stephanie, you hear that,
  • 36:57 - 37:00
how do you respond to the way
  • 37:00 - 37:02
    that King Josiah's acting?
  • 37:02 - 37:05
    (Stephanie) Major reformation.
  • 37:06 - 37:08
    (Derek) How do you describe
  • 37:08 - 37:09
    his attitude in this?
  • 37:09 - 37:12
It is a major reformation. Yes?
  • 37:12 - 37:14
    (Stephanie) He's on a mission.
  • 37:14 - 37:16
He knows, "This is what happened,
  • 37:16 - 37:19
and I'm going to take away anything
  • 37:19 - 37:21
    that has anything to do
  • 37:21 - 37:23
with not worshiping the true God."
  • 37:23 - 37:25
(Derek) Again, you talk about losing
  • 37:25 - 37:27
    the Book of the Law,
  • 37:27 - 37:29
but the things that were happening
  • 37:29 - 37:33
in the temple would never have happened
  • 37:33 - 37:34
    if they had been reading
  • 37:34 - 37:36
    the inspired writings, right?
  • 37:36 - 37:37
    They would have known
  • 37:37 - 37:40
that that was an abomination to God.
    Yes, Sabina?
  • 37:40 - 37:42
    (Sabina) Pastor Derek, I think
  • 37:42 - 37:43
he is an inspiration to me.
  • 37:43 - 37:44
    You know, imagine this person,
  • 37:44 - 37:46
    he was surrounded by people
  • 37:46 - 37:49
who were powerful in some way, you know?
  • 37:49 - 37:50
Even though he was in that position,
  • 37:50 - 37:52
    in a high position,
  • 37:52 - 37:54
    he had to confront others
  • 37:54 - 37:56
so that truth could come out.
  • 37:56 - 37:58
So, I really look up to him; I think
  • 37:58 - 38:00
he was truly used by God at his time.
  • 38:00 - 38:02
    (Derek) I hope there's a young adult
  • 38:02 - 38:05
like you, someone watching you, saying,
  • 38:05 - 38:08
"Could God use me that powerfully today?"
  • 38:08 - 38:10
I remember, Jason, in a previous study,
  • 38:10 - 38:13
you talked about your own experience
  • 38:13 - 38:16
of realizing it wasn't so important
  • 38:16 - 38:19
    what people around you thought.
  • 38:19 - 38:21
How do you see that applying
    here to Josiah?
  • 38:21 - 38:23
    Because I doubt if everybody
  • 38:23 - 38:24
    of these powerful people
  • 38:24 - 38:26
were going, "That's good, tearing down
  • 38:26 - 38:28
    the thing we've been worshiping,
  • 38:28 - 38:31
    burning the thing we've been
    bowing down to."
  • 38:31 - 38:33
(Jason) Yeah, so, if Josiah was
  • 38:33 - 38:37
truly impacted by the people around him,
  • 38:37 - 38:39
he probably would not have done
    all these things.
  • 38:39 - 38:40
He actually probably had to stand
  • 38:40 - 38:42
    against those around him,
  • 38:42 - 38:44
people saying, "No, we like these things.
  • 38:44 - 38:46
These are part of our culture.
  • 38:46 - 38:48
These are part of our identity."
  • 38:48 - 38:50
He had to basically say, "No,
  • 38:50 - 38:51
    my identity is in God,"
  • 38:51 - 38:52
and so he had to stand
  • 38:52 - 38:54
    against the identity that was
  • 38:54 - 38:55
    being imposed upon him,
  • 38:55 - 38:58
probably by all these other forces.
  • 38:58 - 38:59
    (Derek) It's a courageous...
  • 38:59 - 39:01
    I mean, you talked
    about major reformation.
  • 39:01 - 39:04
    It's a courageous leadership move,
    isn't it?
  • 39:04 - 39:05
    (Team) It is.
  • 39:05 - 39:06
    (Derek) Someone could have said,
  • 39:06 - 39:08
    "My grandpa used to worship
  • 39:08 - 39:10
    that thing you just burned."
  • 39:10 - 39:14
"Okay, but it's wrong because this
  • 39:14 - 39:15
is what the Word of God says."
  • 39:15 - 39:18
One last verse in this chapter,
  • 39:18 - 39:19
    Kim, if you could read
  • 39:19 - 39:23
    verse 25 of 2 Kings 23.
  • 39:23 - 39:24
Oh, that this might be said
  • 39:24 - 39:26
of young men and young women
  • 39:26 - 39:30
(and older men and women, too)
    in our generation.
  • 39:30 - 39:32
    Let's see how the author
  • 39:32 - 39:34
    of Kings writes this.
  • 39:34 - 39:35
    (Kim) Sure, I'll be reading
  • 39:35 - 39:37
    from the English Standard Version:
  • 39:51 - 39:53
(Derek) Did you notice that language?
  • 39:53 - 39:54
    Did that remind you
  • 39:54 - 39:57
    of the book of Deuteronomy,
  • 39:57 - 39:59
    chapter 6 and verse 5?
  • 39:59 - 39:59
    (Team) Yes.
  • 39:59 - 40:01
(Derek) It's like we were talking
  • 40:01 - 40:05
in a previous study, that's what we call
  • 40:05 - 40:07
    active remembering, right?
  • 40:07 - 40:09
    That's active remembering.
  • 40:09 - 40:11
    That's actually not just remembering
  • 40:11 - 40:13
    but acting upon it. Sabina?
  • 40:13 - 40:15
(Sabina) And what makes me think then,
  • 40:15 - 40:16
not only was the book making
  • 40:16 - 40:18
    an influence in his surroundings
  • 40:18 - 40:20
    but primarily his own life.
  • 40:20 - 40:22
So, he first had to turn to the God
  • 40:22 - 40:24
of that Scripture he was reading
  • 40:24 - 40:26
with all his might, with all his heart,
  • 40:26 - 40:29
    and then upon the influence
  • 40:29 - 40:30
    of the Holy Spirit
  • 40:30 - 40:32
    to transform his reality.
  • 40:32 - 40:33
    (Derek) That's amazing.
  • 40:33 - 40:35
Well, the book of Deuteronomy, Travis,
  • 40:35 - 40:38
is brought to the fore again
  • 40:38 - 40:40
in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah,
  • 40:40 - 40:41
and I would like to ask you
  • 40:41 - 40:43
    to read from Nehemiah,
  • 40:43 - 40:46
    chapter 8, verses 1 through 8.
  • 40:46 - 40:50
    There's something quite startling
    that happens.
  • 40:50 - 40:51
    You talk, Stephanie,
  • 40:51 - 40:55
    about major reformation.
  • 40:55 - 40:56
    During the time also
  • 40:56 - 40:58
    of Ezra and Nehemiah,
  • 40:58 - 41:01
we see God moving by His Spirit
  • 41:01 - 41:02
    in a powerful way.
  • 41:02 - 41:06
And I do not think a revival
    will ever happen
  • 41:06 - 41:09
apart from the Word of God.
  • 41:09 - 41:11
    Because the reformation
  • 41:11 - 41:13
is guided by the Word, right?
  • 41:13 - 41:15
It shows us where we're living
  • 41:15 - 41:16
    out of harmony. Stephanie?
  • 41:16 - 41:18
(Stephanie) I was just thinking, too,
  • 41:18 - 41:20
    that Josiah was convicted,
  • 41:20 - 41:22
and he was convicted by reading the Word.
  • 41:22 - 41:24
And so today, the Holy Spirit convicts us
  • 41:24 - 41:27
as we read the Word, and then that
  • 41:27 - 41:28
brings about a change in our lives.
  • 41:28 - 41:31
    (Derek) And courage, and courage.
  • 41:31 - 41:33
    Alright, Travis, now we're
  • 41:33 - 41:35
    in the time of Nehemiah,
  • 41:35 - 41:37
    and where are we here?
  • 41:37 - 41:38
    Can someone help me
  • 41:38 - 41:41
with the time of Nehemiah, when is that?
  • 41:41 - 41:45
    Jonathan, approximately,
    the time of Nehemiah?
  • 41:45 - 41:47
    (Jonathan) Oh, so this is
  • 41:47 - 41:49
    right after the return
  • 41:49 - 41:51
or during the return from Babylon,
  • 41:51 - 41:56
    so that would be 470?
  • 41:56 - 41:58
    I don't know, 400 or 500 B.C.
  • 41:58 - 42:00
(Derek) Yeah, so in there, about 150 years
  • 42:00 - 42:03
after the time of King Josiah.
  • 42:03 - 42:05
Let's hope they didn't lose it
  • 42:05 - 42:06
    for another 150 years,
  • 42:06 - 42:09
    but here we find, Travis,
  • 42:09 - 42:13
some serious reading of the book
    of Deuteronomy.
  • 42:13 - 42:14
    Read for us Nehemiah 8,
  • 42:14 - 42:16
    verses 1 through 8.
  • 42:16 - 42:18
    (Travis) And I'll be reading
  • 42:18 - 42:19
from the New King James Version:
  • 44:24 - 44:26
(Derek) Well, I just want to thank Travis
  • 44:26 - 44:28
for reading all those wonderful names.
  • 44:28 - 44:30
That was quite an important list.
  • 44:30 - 44:34
Why do you think it gives all those names
  • 44:34 - 44:35
    rather than just saying,
  • 44:35 - 44:38
    "And some people helped Ezra"?
  • 44:38 - 44:39
    What's the significance
  • 44:39 - 44:41
    of all of those names?
  • 44:41 - 44:42
    "All Scripture is given
  • 44:42 - 44:45
    by inspiration of God," right?
  • 44:45 - 44:47
    Travis, why do you think
  • 44:47 - 44:49
    all those names are there?
  • 44:49 - 44:50
(Travis) Well, it just adds value,
  • 44:50 - 44:52
that it was a real circumstance,
  • 44:52 - 44:54
    they were real people.
  • 44:54 - 44:56
We see this all the time in Scripture
  • 44:56 - 44:58
where God has added dates and times
  • 44:58 - 45:01
    and cities and places.
  • 45:01 - 45:05
It just adds value to the story.
  • 45:05 - 45:06
    (Derek) So, if you
  • 45:06 - 45:07
    were listening carefully,
  • 45:07 - 45:08
    someone's who's good at math,
  • 45:08 - 45:09
    how many hours did they
  • 45:09 - 45:11
    read the Scripture that day?
  • 45:11 - 45:12
They were reading from the Book
  • 45:12 - 45:14
    of the Law, approximately, Jason?
  • 45:14 - 45:16
(Jason) It says "morning to midday,"
  • 45:16 - 45:18
so, let's say four hours or so?
  • 45:18 - 45:20
    (Derek) Alright, so, question:
  • 45:20 - 45:22
    When was the last time
  • 45:22 - 45:24
that you sat down and listened
  • 45:24 - 45:28
to the Word of God for four hours?
  • 45:28 - 45:33
    What does this tell you,
    this story, anybody?
  • 45:33 - 45:35
Puia, what does it tell you,
  • 45:35 - 45:36
    that the king says,
  • 45:36 - 45:37
    "We're going to read Scripture,"
  • 45:37 - 45:39
he reads it for four hours?
  • 45:39 - 45:41
Not only that, he gets some people
  • 45:41 - 45:44
who help them to understand the sense,
  • 45:44 - 45:46
in other words, to explain it
  • 45:46 - 45:48
    so they really understand it.
  • 45:48 - 45:49
    What does that tell you
  • 45:49 - 45:50
    about what's happening here
  • 45:50 - 45:54
during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah?
  • 45:54 - 45:56
    (Puia) As they were rebuilding
  • 45:56 - 45:58
    the city and the wall,
  • 45:58 - 46:00
    I believe they understood
  • 46:00 - 46:04
    that real lasting reformation
  • 46:04 - 46:07
has to begin with the Word of God.
  • 46:07 - 46:08
And I just want to add
  • 46:08 - 46:10
    that from our perspective today,
  • 46:10 - 46:13
    because we have the Scripture
  • 46:13 - 46:16
readily accessible on our cell phones,
  • 46:16 - 46:18
and we have multiple Bibles in our homes
  • 46:18 - 46:21
and even in hotels, if we go to hotels
  • 46:21 - 46:23
there is a Bible in every room,
  • 46:23 - 46:26
and I just can't fully understand
  • 46:26 - 46:28
what it must have been like.
  • 46:28 - 46:29
But, to be in a place where they
  • 46:29 - 46:31
    have never had the opportunity
  • 46:31 - 46:33
to read it for themselves for so long,
  • 46:33 - 46:35
and to hear the Word of God again,
  • 46:35 - 46:38
I believe it must have been an experience
  • 46:38 - 46:41
of a lifetime for them too.
  • 46:41 - 46:42
(Derek) We're going to keep reading.
  • 46:42 - 46:44
    Sabina, if you could read
  • 46:44 - 46:45
    now in chapter 9;
  • 46:45 - 46:47
they're not done reading the Bible.
  • 46:47 - 46:50
They say, "Oh, we read it, that's it," no.
  • 46:50 - 46:53
    Some days pass, and now
  • 46:53 - 46:56
on the twenty-fourth day, is it,
  • 46:56 - 46:59
of this month, verses 1 through 3.
  • 46:59 - 47:01
    Apparently, there is more Scripture
  • 47:01 - 47:05
to be read and to be understood.
  • 47:05 - 47:07
    Let's read it together.
  • 47:07 - 47:08
(Sabina) Okay, so I'll be reading
  • 47:08 - 47:10
from the New King James Version,
  • 47:10 - 47:13
    and chapter 9 of Nehemiah
    from 1 to 3 says:
  • 47:46 - 47:50
(Derek) So, what can we learn
    from that text?
  • 47:50 - 47:54
Did you notice a progression there?
  • 47:54 - 47:55
    Anybody, what do you learn
  • 47:55 - 47:58
    from that passage? Yes, Sabina.
  • 47:58 - 47:59
(Sabina) I see here there is
  • 47:59 - 48:01
a progression in that, you know,
  • 48:01 - 48:03
as they are reading the Bible,
  • 48:03 - 48:04
they come in to a place
  • 48:04 - 48:07
    of repentance, of seeking God.
  • 48:07 - 48:09
It says that they were fasting,
  • 48:09 - 48:11
and they were having this position
  • 48:11 - 48:15
like in sackcloth and with dust
    on their heads.
  • 48:15 - 48:16
    And this leads them
  • 48:16 - 48:19
    to confession and to worship.
  • 48:19 - 48:20
    (Derek) Another question:
  • 48:20 - 48:21
    When was the last time
  • 48:21 - 48:23
    that you spend a fourth
  • 48:23 - 48:27
    of your day in worship?
  • 48:27 - 48:28
    So, what is the relationship
  • 48:28 - 48:33
    between taking the Scripture seriously
  • 48:33 - 48:37
and worshiping in Spirit and in truth?
  • 48:37 - 48:41
    I'm not talking about religious
    entertainment here, right?
  • 48:41 - 48:45
This worship was motivated by the truth
  • 48:45 - 48:47
of the Word they were hearing.
  • 48:47 - 48:49
    What's the relationship
  • 48:49 - 48:51
    between taking Scripture seriously -
  • 48:51 - 48:55
here the book of Deuteronomy -
  • 48:55 - 48:58
and worshiping in Spirit and truth?
  • 48:58 - 49:01
    Anybody? Yes, Puia.
  • 49:01 - 49:03
(Puia) I believe it goes hand-in-hand,
  • 49:03 - 49:05
    because the Psalmist describes
  • 49:05 - 49:07
the Word of God as truth,
  • 49:07 - 49:09
    "Thy Word is the truth."
  • 49:09 - 49:13
So, worshiping God in Spirit and in truth
  • 49:13 - 49:17
goes hand-in-hand with the Word of God.
  • 49:17 - 49:19
(Derek) So, I hear the Word,
  • 49:19 - 49:21
    it teaches me about God,
  • 49:21 - 49:22
    how much He loves me,
  • 49:22 - 49:25
how worthy He is of my worship,
  • 49:25 - 49:27
and I can't just say, "Well, okay,
  • 49:27 - 49:28
I'm going to do something else."
  • 49:28 - 49:31
    Worship in Spirit and truth
  • 49:31 - 49:34
will flow out of that time with the Word.
  • 49:34 - 49:36
Could that be one reason why the enemy
  • 49:36 - 49:37
    tries to keep us away
  • 49:37 - 49:38
    from the Word of God?
  • 49:38 - 49:39
    (Team) Yes.
  • 49:39 - 49:41
    (Derek) Travis.
  • 49:41 - 49:42
    (Travis) So, I'm thinking, Derek,
  • 49:42 - 49:44
as you mentioned, what it means
  • 49:44 - 49:46
to worship in Spirit and truth,
  • 49:46 - 49:48
and I think of the book of Mark
  • 49:48 - 49:50
where it says, "In vain they worship me,"
  • 49:50 - 49:52
you know, "teaching the doctrines of man."
  • 49:52 - 49:55
And it says that, "Their heart
    is far from Me."
  • 49:55 - 49:57
    So, if we're to worship
  • 49:57 - 49:58
    in Spirit and truth,
  • 49:58 - 50:00
and I see that here with this group
  • 50:00 - 50:01
    of people in Nehemiah
  • 50:01 - 50:03
    is that they didn't all
  • 50:03 - 50:04
just want to know the truth
  • 50:04 - 50:06
    about God through the Scriptures,
  • 50:06 - 50:08
    but they actually wanted
  • 50:08 - 50:09
    to come and worship.
  • 50:09 - 50:11
Their heart wasn't far from God.
  • 50:11 - 50:13
They had a desire in their heart
  • 50:13 - 50:15
    to worship and serve God.
  • 50:15 - 50:16
We see that in the last verse
  • 50:16 - 50:17
that was just read that said
  • 50:17 - 50:19
    they assembled together.
  • 50:19 - 50:21
    They wanted to be there.
  • 50:21 - 50:24
    (Derek) Powerful. Yes, Jonathan.
  • 50:24 - 50:26
(Jonathan) It just seems like it wasn't
  • 50:26 - 50:28
    just conceptual knowledge for them.
  • 50:28 - 50:30
They were applying it to themselves
  • 50:30 - 50:33
and realizing they needed to repent.
  • 50:33 - 50:34
They needed to confess their sins,
  • 50:34 - 50:38
and so it was a personal thing.
  • 50:38 - 50:39
    (Derek) So, let's talk
  • 50:39 - 50:41
    about our lives here.
  • 50:41 - 50:42
You know, there are other allusions
  • 50:42 - 50:44
    to the book of Deuteronomy.
  • 50:44 - 50:45
We could read some of them,
  • 50:45 - 50:47
    but I think we've learned
  • 50:47 - 50:49
    that people seeking God
  • 50:49 - 50:51
    take the Scripture seriously.
  • 50:51 - 50:52
    Are you with me?
  • 50:52 - 50:53
    (Team) Yes. Amen.
  • 50:53 - 50:54
    (Derek) People who are led
  • 50:54 - 50:55
    by the Spirit of God
  • 50:55 - 50:57
    will take the Scripture seriously
  • 50:57 - 51:00
that was inspired by the Spirit of God.
  • 51:00 - 51:01
So, I'd like you to share
  • 51:01 - 51:04
    a time in your journey
  • 51:04 - 51:07
    when you were spending
  • 51:07 - 51:09
significant time with the Word of God,
  • 51:09 - 51:11
and the impact that it had on your life.
  • 51:11 - 51:13
    It may be a retreat.
  • 51:13 - 51:14
It may have been a time
  • 51:14 - 51:16
    of just quiet reflection.
  • 51:16 - 51:18
Or, you might say, "I haven't.
  • 51:18 - 51:21
I think I need to do that," right?
  • 51:21 - 51:22
Maybe a conviction comes to us.
  • 51:22 - 51:25
But, Jason, do you want to share a time
  • 51:25 - 51:27
when that was signifcant for you?
  • 51:27 - 51:29
Maybe not exactly like the time
  • 51:29 - 51:30
    of Ezra and Nehemiah,
  • 51:30 - 51:31
    but it was important.
  • 51:31 - 51:33
    (Jason) Sure, so I remember
  • 51:33 - 51:35
when I was in college, I was with a group,
  • 51:35 - 51:37
and we decided that for a Friday evening
  • 51:37 - 51:38
    we were going to read
  • 51:38 - 51:40
through an entire book of the Gospels.
  • 51:40 - 51:41
So, we read through the whole book
  • 51:41 - 51:44
    of Mark in one evening.
  • 51:44 - 51:46
And that was just fascinating to me,
  • 51:46 - 51:47
    because, yeah, I read portions
  • 51:47 - 51:49
    of Scripture here and there,
  • 51:49 - 51:51
but to actually spend several hours
  • 51:51 - 51:53
just listening to the words of Jesus,
  • 51:53 - 51:56
the life of Jesus, the acts of Jesus,
  • 51:56 - 51:58
it really made me think more fully
  • 51:58 - 52:01
about Christ's life and what He had done.
  • 52:01 - 52:04
And it had a spiritual impact for me.
  • 52:04 - 52:06
(Derek) And I would say this to you,
  • 52:06 - 52:07
    even though we're studying
  • 52:07 - 52:09
    Present Truth in Deuteronomy,
  • 52:09 - 52:10
    if you're going to start
  • 52:10 - 52:11
    anywhere in the Bible,
  • 52:11 - 52:13
    start with the Gospels.
  • 52:13 - 52:15
Start with the story of Jesus; He loves us
  • 52:15 - 52:17
    with an immeasurable, unfailing love,
  • 52:17 - 52:19
reveals the Father's love to us, right?
  • 52:19 - 52:20
And do you know there are
  • 52:20 - 52:22
    many professed Christians who have
  • 52:22 - 52:25
never read one of the Gospels?
  • 52:25 - 52:26
    Many professed Christians.
  • 52:26 - 52:28
It's like the book got lost.
  • 52:28 - 52:29
    You say, "Derek, are you
  • 52:29 - 52:32
    just kind of generalizing?"
  • 52:32 - 52:34
    No, I taught a class
  • 52:34 - 52:38
on the life of Jesus for many years
  • 52:38 - 52:39
    at a Christian university,
  • 52:39 - 52:41
and many of my students confessed
  • 52:41 - 52:44
they had never read one of the Gospels
  • 52:44 - 52:45
    in their whole life.
  • 52:45 - 52:47
    So, the book got lost.
  • 52:47 - 52:48
    You're saying that was
  • 52:48 - 52:51
    a powerful experience for you,
    just one book.
  • 52:51 - 52:52
    (Jason) One book.
  • 52:52 - 52:54
    (Derek) Anybody else, a time
  • 52:54 - 52:56
with significant time with the Word?
    Yes, Daniel?
  • 52:56 - 52:57
(Daniel) I remember when I was
  • 52:57 - 52:59
first converted to being a Christian,
  • 52:59 - 53:02
being Adventist, I had a lot of friends
  • 53:02 - 53:04
who always wanted to debate me.
  • 53:04 - 53:06
They always wanted to say, "Hey, no,
  • 53:06 - 53:07
    we think you're wong."
  • 53:07 - 53:09
And what really helped me was I read
  • 53:09 - 53:11
through the four books of the Gospels.
  • 53:11 - 53:13
And what that really helped me
  • 53:13 - 53:15
was understanding what I believe in,
  • 53:15 - 53:17
reassuring me, and it helped me
  • 53:17 - 53:20
to be more able to defend
  • 53:20 - 53:21
    the faith with my friends.
  • 53:21 - 53:22
    (Derek) You know, that's
  • 53:22 - 53:23
    such a powerful thing.
  • 53:23 - 53:25
And by the way, you could listen to them,
  • 53:25 - 53:27
you could watch the Matthew video,
  • 53:27 - 53:28
    which is word-for-word,
  • 53:28 - 53:30
or the John video is word-for-word.
  • 53:30 - 53:32
    They just came out with the Luke video;
  • 53:32 - 53:34
    that's word-for-word.
  • 53:34 - 53:35
    You know, I don't think
  • 53:35 - 53:37
    just kind of dramatic portrayals
  • 53:37 - 53:39
with putting other people's words in,
  • 53:39 - 53:41
    but word-for-word, listen, watch.
  • 53:41 - 53:43
You could even read it, right?
  • 53:43 - 53:45
That was the old way, or listen
  • 53:45 - 53:47
as someone else reads it to you.
  • 53:47 - 53:48
    But Daniel's testimony
  • 53:48 - 53:50
    is just walking through those.
  • 53:50 - 53:52
    What's so powerful about that
  • 53:52 - 53:55
is the Holy Spirit can bring that
  • 53:55 - 53:57
    to your remembrance,
  • 53:57 - 53:59
    because He's the One
  • 53:59 - 54:00
    who inspired the Scripture.
  • 54:00 - 54:03
    Travis, you had a comment.
  • 54:03 - 54:05
    (Travis) Studying the Bible,
  • 54:05 - 54:06
    especially in the last year,
  • 54:06 - 54:07
    has been significant to me,
  • 54:07 - 54:09
because I have been writing outlines
  • 54:09 - 54:11
for an online study that I do.
  • 54:11 - 54:14
Well, I was thinking, the book of Nehemiah
  • 54:14 - 54:15
when it said all those people
  • 54:15 - 54:17
    were helping them understand,
  • 54:17 - 54:19
    well, I've used different avenues
  • 54:19 - 54:20
    to write these outlines
  • 54:20 - 54:22
    and just dissect the Bible.
  • 54:22 - 54:24
And the Bible has really come alive.
  • 54:24 - 54:26
I would sit down for four or five hours
  • 54:26 - 54:28
at a time and just immerse myself
  • 54:28 - 54:31
    in the Scripture, diving in
    verse by verse.
  • 54:31 - 54:33
And it just opened to me
  • 54:33 - 54:36
a whole new picture of Jesus
  • 54:36 - 54:38
and the Scriptures and the value
  • 54:38 - 54:40
of the Scriptures for my life.
  • 54:40 - 54:41
    (Derek) And, Travis, which book
  • 54:41 - 54:43
of the Bible did you decide to use
  • 54:43 - 54:45
    for that in-depth study
  • 54:45 - 54:47
of one of the books of the Bible?
  • 54:47 - 54:49
(Travis) We're studying the book of John.
  • 54:49 - 54:52
(Derek) That's at great book to study,
    one of my favorites.
  • 54:52 - 54:55
    Stephanie, I think you're leading
    a Bible study group, too.
  • 54:55 - 54:56
    Which book did you choose?
  • 54:56 - 54:57
    (Stephanie) John.
  • 54:57 - 54:58
    (Derek) The book of John.
  • 54:58 - 55:00
So, what a great place to start, right?
  • 55:00 - 55:03
Sabina, you wanted to make a comment.
  • 55:03 - 55:04
    (Sabina) I was just thinking,
  • 55:04 - 55:06
when I also came to Jesus,
  • 55:06 - 55:08
    one of my decisions was
  • 55:08 - 55:09
to really pursue meaning in life,
  • 55:09 - 55:11
you know, what was His purpose for me.
  • 55:11 - 55:13
And I came across this verse in Romans.
  • 55:13 - 55:17
    It's Romans 12:2 that says...
  • 55:17 - 55:19
(Derek) Would you like to read it for us?
  • 55:19 - 55:19
    (Sabina) Yes.
  • 55:19 - 55:21
    (Derek) Romans, chapter 12.
  • 55:21 - 55:23
This will be our last verse for our study.
  • 55:23 - 55:25
    Romans 12 and verse 2?
  • 55:25 - 55:26
    (Sabina) It says:
  • 55:35 - 55:36
So, as I was pursuing God's will,
  • 55:36 - 55:38
I decided I was just going to read
  • 55:38 - 55:40
the Bible as much as I could.
  • 55:40 - 55:42
And I remember I would spend afternoons
  • 55:42 - 55:44
    after school/class just reading
  • 55:44 - 55:45
    and reading the Bible
  • 55:45 - 55:47
and asking God, "I know Your will
  • 55:47 - 55:49
is perfect, like it says in Romans 12.
  • 55:49 - 55:52
I want to know it," and it really made
  • 55:52 - 55:54
a lot of difference to me.
  • 55:54 - 55:55
    (Derek) And His Word,
  • 55:55 - 55:57
    inspired by the Holy Spirit,
  • 55:57 - 55:59
is still a "lamp to our feet
  • 55:59 - 56:02
and a light to our path."
  • 56:02 - 56:04
It's present truth; it was present truth
  • 56:04 - 56:06
    when King Josiah found it.
  • 56:06 - 56:08
Doors closed because it had been ignored
  • 56:08 - 56:10
    for hundreds of years.
  • 56:10 - 56:11
It was present truth in the time
  • 56:11 - 56:15
of Ezra and Nehemiah when they said,
  • 56:15 - 56:17
"Read some more, read some more."
  • 56:17 - 56:19
And they raised their hands in praise
  • 56:19 - 56:21
    and true worship to God.
  • 56:21 - 56:22
    My friends, this Word
  • 56:22 - 56:25
is still present truth for us today.
  • 56:25 - 56:27
    From Deuteronomy, yes,
  • 56:27 - 56:29
all the way on to Revelation,
  • 56:29 - 56:32
and don't forget Genesis through Numbers.
  • 56:32 - 56:34
The Word of God is inspired counsel.
  • 56:34 - 56:35
    And the same Holy Spirit
  • 56:35 - 56:37
    who inspired the Word
  • 56:37 - 56:39
will guide your life as you read it.
  • 56:39 - 56:41
    Let's pray; Father in heaven,
  • 56:41 - 56:43
    we thank You so much.
  • 56:43 - 56:45
    We've learned how later prophets
  • 56:45 - 56:48
    and Jesus Himself held Scripture
  • 56:48 - 56:51
in high regard, not only theoretically
  • 56:51 - 56:53
    but in their lives.
  • 56:53 - 56:55
May we, as followers of Jesus,
  • 56:55 - 56:58
    also listen to Your Word
  • 56:58 - 57:00
    and follow Your Word,
  • 57:00 - 57:01
    because we love You.
  • 57:01 - 57:03
    In Jesus' name. Amen.
  • 57:03 - 57:04
    (Team) Amen.
  • 57:04 - 57:07
(Derek) Well, thanks for joining us
    for Hope Sabbath School.
  • 57:07 - 57:08
You say, "Pastor Derek, I need
  • 57:08 - 57:10
to get into the Word of God more."
  • 57:10 - 57:12
