An intergalactic guide to using a defibrillator
-
0:01 - 0:04Last year, I got a chance to watch
the new "Star Wars" movie, -
0:04 - 0:05which was fantastic,
-
0:05 - 0:06but one thing kept bugging me.
-
0:06 - 0:08I don't know if you noticed this or not.
-
0:08 - 0:10In this entirely technically
advanced world, -
0:10 - 0:12I did not see a single AED anywhere,
-
0:12 - 0:14which was totally shocking --
-
0:14 - 0:16almost as shocking
as not knowing what an AED is, -
0:16 - 0:18which you guys do know.
-
0:18 - 0:19But for those at home,
-
0:19 - 0:22an AED is an automated
external defibrillator. -
0:22 - 0:25It's the device you use
when your heart goes into cardiac arrest -
0:25 - 0:27to shock it back into a normal rhythm,
-
0:27 - 0:30or, as one of the guys I was teaching
a class to referred to it as: -
0:30 - 0:32"The shocky-hearty-box thing."
-
0:32 - 0:34(Laughter)
-
0:34 - 0:36But I really can't blame the Empire,
-
0:36 - 0:38since health and safety regulations
-
0:38 - 0:40aren't really their first
order of business. -
0:40 - 0:42Though, even if we --
-
0:42 - 0:46I think worse than not having an AED
would be if there was one there, -
0:46 - 0:48but just, no one knew where to find it.
-
0:48 - 0:52These devices can drastically increase
your chance of survival -- -
0:52 - 0:55almost like a tauntaun on Hoth.
-
0:55 - 0:56(Laughter)
-
0:56 - 0:59But I'm pretty sure
that stormtrooper is going to be toast, -
0:59 - 1:01regardless if we have an AED or not,
-
1:01 - 1:05since what happens is the chest plate
is going to be quite hard to get off, -
1:05 - 1:07and like that tauntaun,
-
1:07 - 1:10the AED has a very short window of time
at which it's highly effective. -
1:10 - 1:15In this case -- basically, we've got
to use it within the first 10 minutes. -
1:15 - 1:18The Jedi, on the other hand,
have no problems with their outfits. -
1:18 - 1:20Those robes open straight up,
-
1:20 - 1:22you can place the pads
right onto the chest -- -
1:22 - 1:24so upper-right-hand side of the chest,
-
1:24 - 1:25lower left,
-
1:25 - 1:28wait for the unit to determine
if it's a shockable rhythm -
1:28 - 1:30and get ready to shock.
-
1:30 - 1:31But, the Jedi do have a problem.
-
1:31 - 1:33They have a head appendage issue.
-
1:33 - 1:36And so I can be totally clear,
thinking I'm ready to go, -
1:36 - 1:39but I'm accidentally touching a tentacle
-
1:39 - 1:41and inadvertently shocking myself.
-
1:41 - 1:42(Laughter)
-
1:42 - 1:47So before you hit that button,
make sure you are clear -
1:47 - 1:48and everyone else is clear.
-
1:48 - 1:51Going back to that stormtrooper:
-
1:51 - 1:53If I did get that chest plate off in time,
-
1:53 - 1:57what would you do if you suddenly found
there was a Wookiee under there, -
1:57 - 2:00or possibly two Ewoks?
-
2:00 - 2:01(Laughter)
-
2:01 - 2:02Well, lucky for us,
-
2:02 - 2:05in the kit there's actually a razor,
-
2:05 - 2:08and we can use that to shave the chest
on the upper right-hand side -
2:08 - 2:10and the lower left.
-
2:11 - 2:12Wookiees also have another problem.
-
2:13 - 2:14They have an accessory issue.
-
2:14 - 2:17What we want to do is remove these --
-
2:17 - 2:20anything between the two pads
we want to remove, -
2:20 - 2:22since it can cause
something called "arcing." -
2:22 - 2:24For those who don't know what arcing is,
-
2:24 - 2:26do you remember the Emperor,
-
2:26 - 2:28when he shoots electricity
out the ends of his fingers -- -
2:28 - 2:29(Laughter)
-
2:29 - 2:31that would be kind of like arcing.
-
2:31 - 2:32Another thing that --
-
2:32 - 2:36Oh! By the way, he creates that
by wearing wool socks under his robes. -
2:36 - 2:37(Laughter)
-
2:37 - 2:40We can also get arcing if we have
an extremely wet chest. -
2:40 - 2:43The electricity travels across the surface
instead of through the heart. -
2:43 - 2:46We can correct this with the immortal
words of Douglas Adams: -
2:46 - 2:49"Don't panic," which most of us
have done today -- -
2:49 - 2:51and also always having a towel.
-
2:51 - 2:53So, good words to go by.
-
2:53 - 2:57The metal bikini -- unfortunately,
this is where panic sets in -- -
2:57 - 2:58like the modern bra,
-
2:58 - 3:00we have to make sure we remove,
-
3:00 - 3:05because this can cause
severe arcing along with burns. -
3:05 - 3:07But unfortunately this opens up an issue
-
3:07 - 3:10that's almost as controversial
as talking about the prequels. -
3:10 - 3:11(Laughter)
-
3:11 - 3:13The mere mention of the word "nipples,"
-
3:13 - 3:16and people get into a little
bit of a tizzy. -
3:16 - 3:18By the way, that is not a nipple,
that's a cupcake. -
3:18 - 3:20(Laughter)
-
3:20 - 3:23Chances are, if you do have to use this,
-
3:23 - 3:25this is going to be on someone you know.
-
3:25 - 3:27And remember, everyone has nipples,
-
3:27 - 3:28except for Jabba.
-
3:28 - 3:30(Laughter)
-
3:30 - 3:32But he does love cupcakes.
-
3:32 - 3:33Speaking about Jabba,
-
3:33 - 3:35if we do have to use an AED on him,
-
3:35 - 3:37remember pad placement is the same,
-
3:37 - 3:39even though he doesn't have nipples.
-
3:39 - 3:42So it's going to be
upper right-hand side, lower left. -
3:42 - 3:45If we were going through, we're shocking,
getting ready to go -- -
3:45 - 3:47after we've done the shock,
-
3:47 - 3:50one of the things we need to do
is remember to do compression. -
3:50 - 3:54The preferred method
is 30 compressions and two breaths -
3:54 - 3:56in the center of the chest,
between the nipples, -
3:56 - 3:58pressing down at least two inches,
-
3:58 - 4:00no more than two and a half,
-
4:00 - 4:03at a rate of at least 100 beats a minute,
-
4:03 - 4:05no more than 120.
-
4:06 - 4:09Unfortunately, due to the size
of Jabba's mouth -
4:09 - 4:11and also what he puts in said mouth,
-
4:11 - 4:15we may not want to actually
do the mouth-to-mouth part. -
4:15 - 4:18So instead, we can do
compression-only CPR. -
4:18 - 4:20The way of remembering
the compression-only part -
4:20 - 4:23is we can actually use the Imperial March.
-
4:23 - 4:25I would sing it for you --
-
4:25 - 4:26(Laughter)
-
4:26 - 4:31Unfortunately, that would be more
something an interrogation droid would do. -
4:31 - 4:32Yoda.
-
4:32 - 4:34Small little guy, like a baby.
-
4:34 - 4:37What we do is basically
treat him like a baby, -
4:37 - 4:40in the sense that we're going to place
one pad in the center of the chest -
4:40 - 4:41and one in the back.
-
4:41 - 4:43If we place them both in the front,
-
4:43 - 4:46they can be too close
and cause severe arcing, -
4:46 - 4:47so we want to avoid that.
-
4:47 - 4:49Hopefully, this helped to clarify
-
4:49 - 4:52and put some light
on some of the darker issues -
4:52 - 4:54of using an AED in the Star Wars universe,
-
4:54 - 4:55or any universe in total.
-
4:55 - 4:57I'll leave you with one point.
-
4:57 - 5:00Remember, if you do find yourself
dealing with a Wookiee, -
5:00 - 5:01do not shave the entire Wookiee.
-
5:01 - 5:03This takes way too much time,
-
5:03 - 5:04and it only pisses them off.
-
5:04 - 5:05(Laughter)
-
5:05 - 5:06Thank you very much.
-
5:06 - 5:09(Applause)
