The virginity fraud | Nina Dølvik Brochmann & Ellen Støkken Dahl | TEDxOslo
-
0:02 - 0:04Nina Dølvik Brochmann: Like most of you,
-
0:04 - 0:10we grew up believing
that the hymen is a proof of virginity, -
0:11 - 0:13but it turns out we were wrong.
-
0:13 - 0:15What we discovered
-
0:15 - 0:20is that the popular story
we're told about female virginity -
0:20 - 0:23is based on two anatomical myths.
-
0:25 - 0:28The truth has been known
in medical communities -
0:28 - 0:30for over a hundred years.
-
0:30 - 0:36Yet somehow, these two myths
continue to make life difficult -
0:36 - 0:38for women around the world.
-
0:39 - 0:42Ellen Støkken Dahl:
The first myth is about blood. -
0:43 - 0:47It tells us that the hymen
breaks and bleeds -
0:47 - 0:50the first time a woman has vaginal sex.
-
0:50 - 0:54In other words, if there is no blood
on the sheets afterwards, -
0:54 - 0:58then the woman was simply not a virgin.
-
0:58 - 1:02The second myth
is a logical consequence of the first. -
1:03 - 1:07Since the hymen is thought
to break and bleed, -
1:07 - 1:11people also believe
that it actually disappears -
1:11 - 1:17or is in some way radically altered
during a woman's first intercourse. -
1:17 - 1:19If that were true,
-
1:19 - 1:25one would easily be able to determine
if a woman is a virgin or not -
1:25 - 1:30by examining her genitals,
by doing a virginity check. -
1:32 - 1:34NDB: So that's our two myths:
-
1:34 - 1:38virgins bleed and hymens are lost forever.
-
1:39 - 1:42Now, this may sound
like a minor issue to you. -
1:42 - 1:48Why should you care about an obscure
little skinfold on the female body? -
1:49 - 1:50But the truth is
-
1:50 - 1:56this is about so much more
than an anatomical misunderstanding. -
1:56 - 2:01The myths about the hymen
have lived on for centuries -
2:01 - 2:04because they have cultural significance.
-
2:04 - 2:10They have been used as a powerful tool
in the effort to control women's sexuality -
2:10 - 2:15in about every culture, religion,
and historical decade. -
2:16 - 2:22Women are still mistrusted,
shamed, harmed, -
2:22 - 2:25and in the worst cases
subjected to honor killings -
2:25 - 2:29if they don't bleed
on their wedding night. -
2:30 - 2:35Other women are forced
through degrading virginity checks, -
2:35 - 2:40simply to obtain a job,
to save their reputation, -
2:40 - 2:42or to get married.
-
2:43 - 2:45ESD: Like in Indonesia,
-
2:45 - 2:50where women are systematically examined
to enter military service. -
2:51 - 2:54After the Egyptian uprisings in 2011,
-
2:54 - 3:00a group of female protesters
were forced to undergo virginity checks -
3:00 - 3:01by their military.
-
3:02 - 3:07In Oslo, doctors are examining
the hymens of young girls -
3:07 - 3:12to reassure parents
that their children are not ruined. -
3:12 - 3:15And sadly, the list goes on.
-
3:16 - 3:21Women are so afraid not to live up
to the myths about the hymen -
3:21 - 3:26that they choose to use
different virginity quick fixes -
3:26 - 3:28to assure a bleeding.
-
3:28 - 3:32That could be plastic surgery
known as revirgination; -
3:32 - 3:36it could be vials of blood
poured on the sheets after sex; -
3:36 - 3:41or fake hymens bought online,
complete with theater blood -
3:41 - 3:46and a promise to kiss
your deep dark secrets goodbye. -
3:50 - 3:54NDB: By telling girls
that no deed can be kept secret, -
3:55 - 3:59that their bodies
will reveal them, no matter what, -
3:59 - 4:02we have endowed them with fear.
-
4:03 - 4:06Girls are afraid of ruining themselves,
-
4:06 - 4:12either through sports, play,
tampon use, or sexual activity. -
4:13 - 4:17We have curtailed their opportunities
and their freedoms. -
4:18 - 4:22It's time we put an end
to the virginity fraud. -
4:22 - 4:25It's time we break the myths
about the hymen, -
4:25 - 4:27once and for all.
-
4:28 - 4:31ESD: We are medical students,
sexual health workers, -
4:31 - 4:35and the authors
of "The wonder Down Under." -
4:35 - 4:37(Laughter)
-
4:37 - 4:41That's a popular science book
about the female genitals. -
4:41 - 4:44And in our experience,
people seem to believe -
4:44 - 4:49that the hymen is some kind of a seal
covering the vaginal opening. -
4:50 - 4:54In Norwegian, it is even called
the virgin membrane, -
4:54 - 4:57and with this,
we picture something fragile, -
4:57 - 5:02something easily destructible,
something you can rip through, -
5:02 - 5:06perhaps like a sheet of plastic wrapping.
-
5:06 - 5:10You may have wondered why
we brought a hoola hoop on stage today. -
5:11 - 5:13
We'll show you. -
5:15 - 5:17(Laughter)
-
5:18 - 5:21Now, it is very hard to hide
-
5:21 - 5:25that something has happened
to this hoop, right? -
5:25 - 5:29It is different before
and after I punched it. -
5:29 - 5:31The seal is broken,
-
5:31 - 5:35and unless we change the plastic
it won't get back to its intact state. -
5:36 - 5:41So if we wanted to do a virginity check
on this hoop, right here, right now, -
5:41 - 5:44that would be very easy.
-
5:44 - 5:50It's easy to say that this hoop
is not a virgin anymore. -
5:53 - 5:56NDB: But the hymen is nothing
like a piece of plastic -
5:56 - 5:59you can wrap around
your food, or a seal. -
6:00 - 6:06In fact, it's more like this:
-
6:06 - 6:09a scrunchie or a rubber band.
-
6:10 - 6:15The hymen is a rim of tissue
at the outer opening of the vagina, -
6:15 - 6:20and usually it has a doughnut
or a halfmoon shape -
6:20 - 6:23with a large central hole,
-
6:23 - 6:28but this varies a lot,
and sometimes hymens can have fringes, -
6:28 - 6:34it can have several holes,
or it can consist of lobes. -
6:34 - 6:39In other words, hymens naturally
vary a lot in looks, -
6:39 - 6:44and that is what makes it so hard
to do a virginity check. -
6:45 - 6:49ESD: Now that we know a bit more
about the hymen's anatomy, -
6:49 - 6:52it's time to get back to our two myths:
-
6:52 - 6:56virgins bleed, hymens are lost forever.
-
6:57 - 7:01But the hymen doesn't have
to break at all. -
7:01 - 7:06The hymen is like a scrunchie,
in function as well as in looks. -
7:06 - 7:09And you can stretch a scrunchie, right?
-
7:10 - 7:12(Laughter)
-
7:12 - 7:18You can stretch a hymen too;
infact, it's very elastic, -
7:20 - 7:21and for a lot of women,
-
7:21 - 7:26the hymen will be elastic enough
to handle a vaginal intercourse -
7:26 - 7:29without sustaining any damage.
-
7:30 - 7:36For other women, the hymen may tear a bit
to make room for the penis, -
7:36 - 7:39but that won't make it disappear,
-
7:39 - 7:42but it may look
a bit different from before. -
7:46 - 7:49NDB: So where does that leave us
with our two myths? -
7:49 - 7:54Well, first of all,
if you have an elastic hymen, -
7:55 - 7:58you will simply never bleed from sex.
-
7:58 - 8:02It doesn't matter
if you're a virgin or not. -
8:02 - 8:05It's an anatomical impossibility,
-
8:05 - 8:09and that is the case for half of you -
-
8:10 - 8:12except for the men amongst you, of course.
-
8:12 - 8:14(Laughter)
-
8:15 - 8:21So in other words, some virgins bleed,
but some simply don't, -
8:21 - 8:25and that's our first myth shattered.
-
8:26 - 8:27It naturally follows
-
8:27 - 8:32that you can't examine the hymen
to check for virginity status. -
8:32 - 8:36This was noted
over 100 years ago, in 1906, -
8:36 - 8:40by the Norwegian Dr. Marie Jeancet.
-
8:40 - 8:44She examined a middle-aged sex worker
-
8:44 - 8:50and concluded that her genitalia
were reminiscent of a teenage virgin. -
8:51 - 8:53But that makes sense, right?
-
8:53 - 8:57Because, if her hymen
was never damaged during sex, -
8:57 - 9:00then what were we expecting to see?
-
9:01 - 9:05ESD: Since hymens come
in every shape and form, -
9:05 - 9:07it is difficult to know
-
9:07 - 9:12if a dent or a fold in it
is there because of previous damage, -
9:12 - 9:16or if it's just a normal
anatomical variant. -
9:16 - 9:20The absurdity of virgin testing
-
9:20 - 9:26is illustrated in a study
done on 36 pregnant teenagers. -
9:27 - 9:30When doctors examined their hymens,
-
9:30 - 9:37they could only find clear signs
of penetration in 2 out of the 36 girls. -
9:39 - 9:43So unless you believe
in 34 cases of virgin births, -
9:43 - 9:45(Laughter)
-
9:45 - 9:52we must all agree that also our 2nd myth
has taken a vital blow. -
9:53 - 9:56You simply cannot look a woman
between her legs -
9:56 - 9:58and read her sexual story.
-
10:03 - 10:08NDB: Like most myths,
the myths about the hymen are untrue. -
10:09 - 10:14There is no virgin seal
that magically disappears after sex, -
10:14 - 10:19and half the virgins
can easily have sex without bleeding. -
10:21 - 10:24We wish we could say
that by removing these myths, -
10:24 - 10:26everything would be okay;
-
10:26 - 10:32that shame, harm and honor killings
would all just disappear, -
10:33 - 10:36but of course it's not that simple.
-
10:36 - 10:39Sexual oppression of women
comes from something much deeper -
10:39 - 10:46than a simple anatomical misunderstanding
about the properties of the hymen. -
10:46 - 10:52It's a question of cultural and religious
control of women's sexuality. -
10:52 - 10:58And that is much harder to change,
but we must try. -
10:59 - 11:03ESD: As medical professionals,
this is our contribution. -
11:04 - 11:08We want every girl, parent,
and coming husband -
11:08 - 11:13to know what the hymen is,
and how it works. -
11:13 - 11:19We want them to know that the hymen
can't be used as a proof of virginity, -
11:19 - 11:22and that way, we can remove
-
11:22 - 11:27one of the most powerful tools
used to control young women today. -
11:29 - 11:31After telling you this,
-
11:32 - 11:35you may wonder what the alternative is.
-
11:36 - 11:41For if we cannot use the hymen
as a proof of virginity for women, -
11:41 - 11:43then what should we use?
-
11:45 - 11:48We opt for using nothing.
-
11:48 - 11:50(Cheers)
-
11:50 - 11:51If you -
-
11:51 - 11:54(Applause) (Cheers)
-
11:57 - 12:02If you really want to know
if a woman is a virgin or not, -
12:02 - 12:03ask her.
-
12:03 - 12:05(Laughter)
-
12:05 - 12:10But how she answers
that question is her choice. -
12:11 - 12:12Thank you.
-
12:12 - 12:17(Applause)
