The most powerful woman you've never heard of

  • Not Synced
    T. Morgan Dixon: I would like to tell you
  • Not Synced
    about the most powerful woman
    you've never heard of.
  • Not Synced
    This is Septima Clark.
  • Not Synced
    Remember her name --
  • Not Synced
    Septima Clark.
  • Not Synced
Dr. King called her the "the architect"
    of the civil rights movement.
  • Not Synced
    She created something
    called citizenship schools,
  • Not Synced
    and in those schools,
  • Not Synced
    she taught ordinary women
    the practical skills
  • Not Synced
to go back into their communities
    and teach people to read,
  • Not Synced
    because if they could read,
  • Not Synced
    they could vote.
  • Not Synced
    All these women took
    those organizing skills,
  • Not Synced
and they became some of the most
    legendary civil rights activisits
  • Not Synced
    this country has ever seen.
  • Not Synced
    Women like Diane Nash.
  • Not Synced
    You may know her.
  • Not Synced
    She orchestrated the entire walk
    from Selma to Montgomery.
  • Not Synced
She was the co-founder of the student
    non-violent coordinating committee,
  • Not Synced
    and they integrated lunch counters
  • Not Synced
and they created the freedom rides.
  • Not Synced
Or you may remember Fanny Lou Hamer,
  • Not Synced
who say on the floor of the Democratic
    National Convention,
  • Not Synced
    and talked about being
    beaten in jail cells
  • Not Synced
    as she registered people
    to vote in Mississippi.
  • Not Synced
    And her most famous student:
  • Not Synced
    Rosa Parks.
  • Not Synced
She said Septima Clark was the one
  • Not Synced
    who taught her the peaceful
    act of resistance.
  • Not Synced
    And when she sat down,
  • Not Synced
she inspired a nation to stand.
  • Not Synced
    These were just three
    of her 10,000 students.
  • Not Synced
    These women stood
    on the frontlines of change,
  • Not Synced
    and by doing so,
  • Not Synced
    they taught people to read
    in her citizenship school model
  • Not Synced
    and empowered 700,000 new voters.
  • Not Synced
    And that's not it.
  • Not Synced
    She created a new culture
    of social activism.
  • Not Synced
Pete Seeger said it was Septima Clark
    who changed the lyrics
  • Not Synced
    to the old gospel song,
  • Not Synced
and made the anthem we all know:
  • Not Synced
    "We Shall Overcome."
  • Not Synced
    Vanessa Garrison: Now,
many of you may know us.
  • Not Synced
We are the co-founders of GirlTrek.
  • Not Synced
    The largest health organization
    for Black women in America.
  • Not Synced
    Our mission is simple.
  • Not Synced
    Ask Black women,
  • Not Synced
80 percent of whom are over
    a healthy body weight,
  • Not Synced
to walk outside of their front
    door every day
  • Not Synced
    to establish a life-saving
    habit of walking.
  • Not Synced
    In doing so,
  • Not Synced
    ignite a radical movement
  • Not Synced
    in which Black women reverse
    the devastating impacts
  • Not Synced
    of chronic disease,
  • Not Synced
    reclaim the streets
    of their neighborhoods,
  • Not Synced
    create a new culture
    of health for their families,
  • Not Synced
and stand on the frontlines for justice.
  • Not Synced
    Today,
  • Not Synced
    all across America,
  • Not Synced
    more than 100,000 Black women
are wearing this GirlTrek blue shirt
  • Not Synced
as they move through their communities --
  • Not Synced
    a heroic force.
  • Not Synced
We walk in the footsteps of Septima Clark.
  • Not Synced
She gave us a blueprint for change making.
  • Not Synced
One: to have a bold idea,
  • Not Synced
bigger than anyone is comfortable with,
  • Not Synced
    to two:
  • Not Synced
root down in the cultural traditions
    of your community,
  • Not Synced
and lean heavily on what as come before,
  • Not Synced
    to three:
  • Not Synced
    name it.
  • Not Synced
    That one thing that everyone
is willing to work hard for --
  • Not Synced
    a ridiculously simple goal
  • Not Synced
that doesn't just benefit the individual,
  • Not Synced
    but the village around them.
  • Not Synced
    And to lastly,
  • Not Synced
    never ask permission
    to save your own life.
  • Not Synced
    It is our fundamental
    right as human beings
  • Not Synced
    to solve our own problems.
  • Not Synced
    TD: So to the women,
  • Not Synced
    all out there getting gathered
    in your living rooms,
  • Not Synced
    rooting for us,
  • Not Synced
acting crazy on social media right now,
  • Not Synced
    we see you.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    We see you every day.
  • Not Synced
    We love you.
  • Not Synced
    You are not alone,
  • Not Synced
and our bigger work starts now.
  • Not Synced
VG: You got us onto this stage.
  • Not Synced
    Your leadership.
  • Not Synced
    Auditing blighted streets in Detroit,
  • Not Synced
    working with hospitals
and health care systems in Harlem,
  • Not Synced
praying over the streets of Sacramento,
    Charlotte, Brooklyn, Flint
  • Not Synced
and every community that has seen trauma,
  • Not Synced
    changing traffic patterns,
  • Not Synced
    making your streets safer,
  • Not Synced
    and most importantly,
  • Not Synced
    standing as role models.
  • Not Synced
And it all started with your
    commitment to start walking,
  • Not Synced
    you agreement to organize
    your friends and family,
  • Not Synced
and your belief in our broader mission.
  • Not Synced
It's important to me that everyone
    in this room understands exactly
  • Not Synced
how change making works in GirlTrek.
  • Not Synced
One well-trained organizer has the power
  • Not Synced
    to change the behavior
    of 100 of her friends.
  • Not Synced
    We know that is true
  • Not Synced
    because the 100,000 women
blowing up social media right now
  • Not Synced
    have already inspired
    over 100,000 women to walk.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
But that is not nearly enough,
  • Not Synced
    and so our goal
    is to create critical mass.
  • Not Synced
And in order to do that,
  • Not Synced
    we have an audacious plan
    to scale our intervention.
  • Not Synced
    1,000 organizers is not enough.
  • Not Synced
    GirlTrek is going to create
    the next citizenship school.
  • Not Synced
    And in doing so,
  • Not Synced
    we will train 10,000
    frontline health activists,
  • Not Synced
and deploy them into the highest-need
    communities in America
  • Not Synced
    because when we do,
  • Not Synced
    we will disrupt disease;
  • Not Synced
we will create a new culture of health.
  • Not Synced
And what we will do is create
    a support system
  • Not Synced
    for one million Black women
to walk to save their own lives.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    And our training is unparalleled.
  • Not Synced
I just want you to imagine.
  • Not Synced
    It's like a [revival, tent-like] festival,
  • Not Synced
    not unlike the civil rights
    movement teach-ins,
  • Not Synced
    and we're going to go
    all across the country.
  • Not Synced
It is the biggest announcement this week.
  • Not Synced
Vanessa and I, and a team
    of masterful teachers,
  • Not Synced
    all to culminate next year,
  • Not Synced
    on sacred ground,
  • Not Synced
    in Selma, Alabama,
  • Not Synced
to create a new annual tradition
that we are calling "Summer of Selma."
  • Not Synced
VG: Summer of Selma will be
    an annual pilgrimage
  • Not Synced
that will include a walk --
  • Not Synced
    54 miles,
  • Not Synced
the sacred route from Selma to Montgomery.
  • Not Synced
It will also include rigorous trainging.
  • Not Synced
    Picture it:
  • Not Synced
as women come to learn organizing
    and recruitment strategies,
  • Not Synced
    to study exercise science,
  • Not Synced
    to take nutrition classes,
  • Not Synced
    to learn storytelling,
  • Not Synced
    to become certified
    as outdoor trip leaders
  • Not Synced
    and community advocates.
  • Not Synced
TD: This is going to be unprecedented.
  • Not Synced
It's going to be a moment in time
    like a cultural institution,
  • Not Synced
    and in fact,
  • Not Synced
it's going to be the Woodstock
    of Black girl healing.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    VG: And the need ...
  • Not Synced
    it's more urgent than ever.
  • Not Synced
    We are losing our communities'
    greatest resource.
  • Not Synced
Black women are dying in plain sight.
  • Not Synced
And not only is no one talking about it,
  • Not Synced
    but we refuse to acknowledge
that the source of this crisis
  • Not Synced
is rooted in the same injustice
  • Not Synced
    that first propelled
    the civil rights movement.
  • Not Synced
    On December 30 of 2017,
  • Not Synced
    Erica Garner,
  • Not Synced
    the daughter of Eric Garner,
  • Not Synced
    a Black man who died
on the streets of New York
  • Not Synced
    from a police chokehold,
  • Not Synced
past away of a heart attack.
  • Not Synced
    Erica was just 27 years old;
  • Not Synced
    the mother of two children.
  • Not Synced
She would be one of 137
    Black women that day --
  • Not Synced
more than 50,000 in the last year
to die from a heart-related issue.
  • Not Synced
Many of their hearts broken from trauma.
  • Not Synced
The impacts of stress on Black women
  • Not Synced
who send their children and spouses
    out the door each day
  • Not Synced
unsure if they will come home alive,
  • Not Synced
who work jobs where they are paid
63 cents to every dollar paid
  • Not Synced
    to white men,
  • Not Synced
    who live in communities
    with crumbling infrastructure,
  • Not Synced
    with no access to fresh
    fruits or vegetables,
  • Not Synced
    with little to no walkable
    or green spaces.
  • Not Synced
    The impact of this inequality
    is killing Black women
  • Not Synced
    at higher and faster rates
than any other group in the country.
  • Not Synced
But that is about to change --
  • Not Synced
    it has to.
  • Not Synced
TD: So let me tell you a story.
  • Not Synced
    About three weeks ago,
  • Not Synced
many of you may have watched
  • Not Synced
Vanessa and I and a team
of 10 women walked 100 miles
  • Not Synced
    on the actual underground railroad.
  • Not Synced
We did it in five days --
  • Not Synced
    five long and beautiful days.
  • Not Synced
    And the world watched.
  • Not Synced
    Three million people watched
    the live stream.
  • Not Synced
    Some of you in here,
  • Not Synced
    the influencers,
  • Not Synced
    shared the story.
  • Not Synced
Urban radio blasted it across the country.
  • Not Synced
VG: Even the E! new channel interrupted
    a story about the Kardashians,
  • Not Synced
    which, if you asked us,
  • Not Synced
is just a little bit of justice --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
to report that GirlTrek has made it
    safely on our hundred-mile journey.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
TD: People were rooting for us.
  • Not Synced
And they were rooting for us because
in this time of confusion and contention,
  • Not Synced
this journey allowed us all to reflect
on what it meant to be American.
  • Not Synced
    We saw America up-close
    and personal as we walked.
  • Not Synced
    We walked through historic towns,
  • Not Synced
    through dense forest,
  • Not Synced
    past former plantations,
  • Not Synced
    and one day,
  • Not Synced
we walked into a gas station
    that was also a café,
  • Not Synced
and it was filled with men.
  • Not Synced
    They were wearing camo
    and had hunting supplies,
  • Not Synced
and up front were all of their trucks,
  • Not Synced
and one of them had a confederate flag.
  • Not Synced
And so we left the establishment,
  • Not Synced
    and as we're walking along
    this narrow strip of road,
  • Not Synced
a few of the trucks reared by us so close,
  • Not Synced
    and out of their tailpipe
was the specter of mob violence.
  • Not Synced
    It was unnerving.
  • Not Synced
    But then it happened.
  • Not Synced
    Right on the border
    of Maryland and Delaware.
  • Not Synced
We saw a man standing by his truck,
  • Not Synced
    the tailgate was down,
  • Not Synced
    he had on a brown jacket;
  • Not Synced
    he was standing there awkwardly.
  • Not Synced
The first two girls in our group,
  • Not Synced
    Jule and Sandria,
  • Not Synced
    they walked back because
    he looked suspicious.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    But the bigger group,
  • Not Synced
we stopped to give him a chance,
  • Not Synced
and he walked up to us and he said,
  • Not Synced
"Hi, my name is Jake Green.
  • Not Synced
    I heard you on Christian
    radio this morning,
  • Not Synced
and God told me to bring you supplies."
  • Not Synced
    He brought us water,
  • Not Synced
    he brought us granola,
  • Not Synced
    and he brought us tissue.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And we needed tissue because
we had just walked through a Noreaster,
  • Not Synced
    it was 29 degrees,
  • Not Synced
it was sleeting on our faces.
  • Not Synced
Our sneakers and our socks were frozen
    and wet and frozen again.
  • Not Synced
We needed that tissue more than he
    could have possibly understood.
  • Not Synced
    So on that day,
  • Not Synced
    in that moment,
  • Not Synced
    Jake Green renewed
my faith in God for sure,
  • Not Synced
but he renewed my faith in humanity.
  • Not Synced
We have a choice to make.
  • Not Synced
In America, we can fall further
into the darkness of discord or not.
  • Not Synced
And I am here to tell you
  • Not Synced
    that the women of GirlTrek
    are walking through the streets
  • Not Synced
with a light that cannot be extinguished.
  • Not Synced
    VG: They are also walking
    through the streets
  • Not Synced
with a mission as clear, as powerful
as the women who marched in Montgomery.
  • Not Synced
    That disease stops here.
  • Not Synced
    That trauma stops here.
  • Not Synced
    And with your support,
  • Not Synced
    and in our ancestors' footsteps,
  • Not Synced
    these 10,000 newly trained activists
will launch the largest health revolution
  • Not Synced
    this country has ever seen.
  • Not Synced
And they will return to their communities
and model the best of human flourishing.
  • Not Synced
    And we,
  • Not Synced
    we will all celebrate.
  • Not Synced
    Because like Jake Green understood,
  • Not Synced
    our fates our intertwined.
  • Not Synced
    Septima Clark once said:
  • Not Synced
the air has finally gotten to a place
where we can breathe it together.
  • Not Synced
    And yet,
  • Not Synced
the haunting last words of Eric Garner
  • Not Synced
    were "I can't breathe."
  • Not Synced
    And his daughter Erica died
    at 27 years old,
  • Not Synced
    still seeking justice.
  • Not Synced
    So we --
  • Not Synced
we're going to keep doing Septima's work
  • Not Synced
    until her words become reality,
  • Not Synced
    until Black women are no longer dying;
  • Not Synced
until we can all breathe the air together.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
