Smile, you are beautiful | Robby Borders | TEDxYouth@ParkCity

  • 0:06 - 0:08
When I look into the mirror,
  • 0:08 - 0:13
    I see my 12-year-old self
    with cuts, scars, and bruises,
  • 0:13 - 0:15
but it wasn't who I am.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    Every day, I was bullied
    because of who I was.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
I was born with this disorder
    called ectrodactyly,
  • 0:22 - 0:27
which gave me four fingers on each hand
and two toes on each foot.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    All the hairs didn't grow
    inside my ears correctly.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
But the best thing about those things
  • 0:34 - 0:38
is that I can just drive with Bluetooth
hooked up into my hearing aids,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
just jamming out just for fun,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
while I can just drive around
    and do the Spock
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    and find that everyone -
  • 0:45 - 0:49
they can just freak out and say,
    "Whoa, this is cool."
  • 0:49 - 0:53
Every time when I hear "suicide,"
  • 0:53 - 0:58
people getting bullied, I never knew
what it really was until I felt it.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    "Go kill yourself."
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    "You're not worth it."
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    "You're retarded."
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    It hurt so much
that it's been said to me.
  • 1:08 - 1:13
Suicide is now the number one cause
for teenagers from 12 to 18.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
    It hurts everyone inside,
    but they're not doing something.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
When I went to a Young Life camp,
I wanted to meet new friends.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
I wanted to have a better experience.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    I wanted to enjoy life.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
But that didn't really work out.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
So every day I sat in the corner.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
But this one day, it was special to me:
  • 1:39 - 1:43
a guy with big bushy hair,
with a guitar in his hand.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
showing the biggest smile to everyone.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
He was in a group with tons of people,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
and he says, "Give me a minute.
I'm going to talk to this kid."
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    So he did.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
He'd come sit down with me.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
He'd talk and say, "I've been bullied too.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
I never had a lot of friends either
    because of who I was."
  • 2:01 - 2:05
We talked about it, and we had
the exact same comment of each other.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
We didn't know who we really were.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    He always told me something,
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    "No matter what happens,
    you just need to smile.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    You just need to smile
    because you're beautiful."
  • 2:17 - 2:21
Every day, he said that to me,
    it made me think more.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    About two years ago,
    Devin committed suicide.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    My heart was broken.
I didn't know what to do.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
I didn't want to be here.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Devin really changed my life.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
After I went to his funeral,
  • 2:38 - 2:42
    my mind started to think,
"I need to do something about this."
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    It keeps hurting me inside.
  • 2:47 - 2:52
    When I thought I can't do something,
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    it came to my head,
    "Smile, you are beautiful."
  • 2:57 - 3:01
And instantly I knew I can do that.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
So for the past two years,
I was holding a sign that says,
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    "Smile, you're beautiful."
  • 3:07 - 3:12
It didn't stop me from doing it
    after tons of months.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    People say, "You're an idiot.
    Why are you doing this?
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    You're wasting your whole time.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
You should go get a job,
do something fun with your life.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    Just stand instead of sitting
on the side of the street,
  • 3:22 - 3:27
just holding a sign that always says,
    'Smile, you're beautiful.'"
  • 3:27 - 3:31
One day, I was standing on the side
of the road holding the sign.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
This guy comes up to me and says,
  • 3:34 - 3:39
    "I love your message.
My son did the exact same thing."
  • 3:39 - 3:45
And he talked about how his son said
the exact same thing to other people,
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    "Smile, you're beautiful,"
  • 3:47 - 3:50
to every single girl and guy
    who was sitting alone
  • 3:50 - 3:52
and didn't know what to do in life.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    And he told me
    that he committed suicide too.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
And he said that was his message
    from his son from above,
  • 4:01 - 4:04
and he broke down as I did.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
And it means so much that
I'm doing something to help other people.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
I went to California to hold my sign
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    to show other people
that they are beautiful no matter what.
  • 4:16 - 4:20
I went to Santa Monica, Long Beach,
    even Warner Brothers Studios
  • 4:20 - 4:23
just to hold a sign that says,
    "Smile, you're beautiful."
  • 4:23 - 4:29
    Some people say it's crazy,
but for me, it's the best time of my life.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
So I just want to remind to everyone -
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    "Smile, you are beautiful."
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    (Applause)
