    Hello! RINA here.
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    I'm in Fukuoka right now.
  • 0:05 - 0:10
We just came here at the end of April for our tour,

(Thanks to everyone who came to our tour!)
  • 0:10 - 0:15
and I'm really happy I get to come back again so soon at the start of May.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
I love Fukuoka no matter how many times I come here.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
I flew in in the morning.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
Today, I'm not here for a concert--
  • 0:26 - 0:30
our new single is out on May 10,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
which we're releasing physical CDs of,
  • 0:34 - 0:41
and since we're making CDs in this streaming era,

(Releasing CDs is now a special, huge event)
  • 0:41 - 0:45
each of the band members are going around to different areas,
  • 0:45 - 0:49
doing promo on radio and TV programs.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
It feels like forever since we last did this. I'm really happy.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
And right now I'm recording for a lot of radio programs,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    doing a live broadcast soon,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    and recording for TV programs.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
And at the end of the day, I have a signing event.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
We'd thought we'd do our first signing events.

(Thanks to everyone who came♡ It was fun!)
  • 1:11 - 1:13
They're being held at Tower Records branches.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
That's how my schedule is today.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
It's so nice and fun when it feels fresh.
  • 1:20 - 1:27
Each of have a staff member going around with us,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    and the staffer with me...
  • 1:31 - 1:35
We have an imprint label called "her,"
  • 1:35 - 1:44
and my staffer is a very young man nicknamed Manatee.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
This is our first time traveling together.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    He's so adorable.
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    My...
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    Yes?
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    Thanks.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    I'm filming a YouTube video.

    (Manatee appears)
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    Wow.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    You're certainly a hardworker.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
I'm filming. Thank you so much!
  • 2:05 - 2:07
Ah, a hot drink. That makes me happy.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
I was just talking about you.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
This is our first time traveling together.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    I'm saying that it's interesting.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
What is this? The first time...
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    It's pretty interesting.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    -It feels way too fresh.
    -That's true.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
    -What did you buy--
-How long have you been with SCANDAL now?
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    -It's been a year.
    -Yeah.
    -May.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    -We first met then.
    -Yeah.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
-It feels like it's been longer than that.
    -Really?
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    We got close really fast.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    So cute.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    Thanks.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    Thanks for all of this.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    This is funny.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    Thank you.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    -I appreciate it.
-All of you can eat it tomorrow.

(They bought a lot of Kyushu-only snacks)
  • 3:05 - 3:07
Those look like ones the members would like.
  • 3:08 - 3:13
-Are those only sold in Kyushu?
    -I think.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    -The "her" imprint label.
    -That's right.
  • 3:23 - 3:27
-Does it feel like you're part of "her"?
    -It does.
    -Really?
  • 3:27 - 3:32
It felt like I was when I was interviewed.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
I'm really happy to hear that.
  • 3:36 - 3:43
I first joined as part of Colourful [Records] and Victor [Entertaiment].
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    Not as part of "her."
  • 3:57 - 4:01
    -Manatee's generation--
    -What does "her" actually mean?
    -"her"?
  • 4:01 - 4:07
At first, we also had no idea what direction to go in.
  • 4:08 - 4:11
We had no idea what to name [the imprint label].
  • 4:11 - 4:16
But what we had treasured during those previous 10 years
  • 4:16 - 4:20
definitely had to have been being an all-girl band.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    It started from that thought.
  • 4:23 - 4:29
We thought that going with a word that made you think of women just by hearing it would be good.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
That's all we needed to decide on it.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
Also, it'd look cute in text form.
  • 4:39 - 4:46
You sometimes hear of all-girl bands being looked down upon.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
We're not angry about that at all.
  • 4:49 - 4:55
It wouldn't be surprising, given that you value and have that as your identity.
  • 4:55 - 4:59
    I totally get both stances.
  • 4:59 - 5:02
There's been a big increase in all-girl bands.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
Yeah, ones in their first year of high school.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
All of a sudden there were a lot.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
-There are a lot of younger girls.
    -Right? There are.
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    It's a lot of fun.
  • 5:14 - 5:18
It was sad when there was a dip in all-girl bands.
  • 5:19 - 5:24
It's getting good again. It's getting exciting.
  • 5:25 - 5:30
It really is hard to continue being an all-girl band.
  • 5:30 - 5:34
That fleetingness is also cool somehow.
  • 5:35 - 5:39
    -It is nice.
-There's nothing fleeting about SCANDAL now, is there?
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    Wait, this is embarrassing!
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    This is embarrassing.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    I mean, you're celebrating your 17th anniversary.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
-You've been in the band for half of your life...?
    -More than that.
  • 5:53 - 5:57
-I've been in it since my 15th birthday.
    -That's awesome.
  • 5:57 - 6:02
I was invited to join when I was 14, decided to do it,
  • 6:02 - 6:05
and the day the four of us decided to go ahead with it
  • 6:05 - 6:07
just happened to be my birthday.
  • 6:07 - 6:08
    Wow.
  • 6:08 - 6:13
August 21 this year is when they have their anniversary concert,
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    -but it's also RINA's birthday.
    -That's right.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    -Do you not like that?
    -No, it's not like that.
  • 6:19 - 6:22
I think of it more as our formation day.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    -That's awesome.
    -We age together.
  • 6:26 - 6:30
    -In what sense...
-Yeah, there's lots to celebrate then.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
There's always an event on her birthday.
  • 6:36 - 6:39
I end my birthday feeling anxious.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    When the band first formed,
  • 6:42 - 6:46
were you to be the drummer from the start? Or...
  • 6:46 - 6:50
The vacant position was the drums,
  • 6:50 - 6:53
but I was fine with any position.
  • 6:54 - 6:55
When I met the other three,
  • 6:55 - 6:58
I thought, "I really want to do this with them!"
  • 6:59 - 7:02
So it's like the members took priority [over what position I'd be doing].
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    Any similar bands?
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    Including changes...
  • 7:09 - 7:13
When you compare the band from then until now, it's totally different.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    You've been gradually changing.
  • 7:16 - 7:20
    -It's interesting.
    -It really is.
  • 7:20 - 7:24
But you still totally perform songs from back then.
  • 7:26 - 7:31
You guys didn't start after reaching a certain level of maturity--
  • 7:31 - 7:35
you've been doing this long before [you became adults],
  • 7:35 - 7:37
so there's quite a huge difference from other groups.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    There really is.
  • 7:39 - 7:43
It's because we started from not knowing how to do anything.
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    Pretty much anything.
  • 7:46 - 7:51
You're still totally incomplete as a human being when you're a middle schooler.
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    That's true.
  • 7:54 - 7:57
-Adolescence was the band as it were.
    -For real.
  • 7:59 - 8:01
    14 years old, huh...
  • 8:03 - 8:07
    I have a little sister who's currently a first-year high schooler.
  • 8:07 - 8:08
    -Right now?
    -Yes.
  • 8:08 - 8:11
There are a total of 5 kids in my family.
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    -You're the oldest?
    -Yes.
  • 8:15 - 8:18
My sister, who is I think the fourth sibling overall,
  • 8:18 - 8:20
    is a first-year high schooler.
  • 8:20 - 8:23
We debuted when I was a second-year high schooler,
  • 8:23 - 8:25
so when I think about how many years have passed...
  • 8:26 - 8:29
-You see her as your own kid.
    -Yeah, I do.
  • 8:29 - 8:32
And it makes me think of how amazing mothers are.
  • 8:33 - 8:38
You need to have a lot of courage to say "Go ahead!" to your kid
  • 8:38 - 8:42
who's suddenly moving to Tokyo at that age.
  • 8:42 - 8:46
    Mothers are amazing.
  • 8:47 - 8:50
    -You were also suddenly employed.
    -That's true.
  • 8:52 - 8:55
That really is true. And I've never had a part-time job, either.
  • 8:56 - 8:59
-Are you the only one in the band to not have had one?
    -TOMOMI as well.
  • 9:00 - 9:04
-You started a career in music around the age that you'd work part time.
    -Yeah.
  • 9:05 - 9:06
    That's impressive.
  • 9:06 - 9:12
But now that's one thing that I wish I had experienced.
  • 9:12 - 9:15
-You've never had a part-time job in secret?
    -No.
  • 9:17 - 9:21
I have a lot of respect for those in all kinds of occupations.
  • 9:21 - 9:23
I don't think I could do any of that.
  • 9:31 - 9:34
We talked about this a little earlier,
  • 9:35 - 9:39
that my convos with friends have changed
  • 9:39 - 9:43
in regards troubles they have now and what they're thinking about.
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    Like buying a house,
  • 9:45 - 9:48
where they should live in the future,
  • 9:48 - 9:51
    having kids.
  • 9:51 - 9:55
What they worry about keeps changing,
  • 9:55 - 9:59
but the only thing I ever worry about is music.
  • 10:00 - 10:03
    -That's true.
    -That's wonderful, though.
  • 10:04 - 10:07
Your friends are probably jealous of that.
  • 10:08 - 10:13
They tell me that I always have a dream I want to come true.
  • 10:14 - 10:19
    Everyone's dreams and values differ.
  • 10:20 - 10:25
-If you have kids, you need to put them before your own dreams.
    -Yeah.
  • 10:26 - 10:30
    I have two daughters,
  • 10:30 - 10:33
and if they wanted a guitar, I'd be like, "Yes!"
  • 10:33 - 10:36
or a keyboard, or anything that I liked,
  • 10:36 - 10:38
or something related to my job,
  • 10:38 - 10:41
I'd give it to them in a heartbeat.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
But they'd never keep it up.
  • 10:44 - 10:49
-It makes you happy when they show an interest.
-Yeah, you want them to have an interest.
  • 10:51 - 10:52
    That's nice. That's fun.
  • 10:57 - 11:00
There's a luxury of having both:
  • 11:00 - 11:03
It's a luxury to be able to focus on your own life
  • 11:03 - 11:07
and spend all the time you want on things you want to do.
  • 11:07 - 11:12
I think a life like ours is very luxurious.
  • 11:13 - 11:18
I'm sure it's tough, but I'm sure it's also fun
  • 11:18 - 11:22
when people's lives change as they start families.
  • 11:24 - 11:32
SCANDAL debuted when you guys were still students--kids--and now you're adults.
  • 11:32 - 11:36
I don't know what's next for you guys,
  • 11:36 - 11:39
but it seems like you guys would still be a band even if you started families.
  • 11:39 - 11:44
I think it's really impressive when people can do that.
  • 11:44 - 11:47
There are still phases like that, too.
  • 11:48 - 11:53
Those close to you guys might think you guys should time it right.
  • 11:54 - 11:57
    But like, that's totally...
  • 11:57 - 12:01
For example, if we decided to have kids and it ends up being around the same time,
  • 12:01 - 12:05
the band might temporarily take a break that could last for a few years.
  • 12:06 - 12:09
    If that seems doable,
  • 12:09 - 12:17
it'd be great if we could keep our energy and stamina that we have right now.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
    That's what I'm worried about.
  • 12:21 - 12:24
    Hopefully we can do that,
  • 12:24 - 12:26
and go back to our current peak.
  • 12:28 - 12:33
Well, each generation has their own approach to things,
  • 12:33 - 12:39
and you might do another approach different to what's being done now.
  • 12:39 - 12:42
-That's what veterans do, after all.
    -True.
  • 12:42 - 12:45
    Everyone's so awesome, seriously.
  • 12:45 - 12:48
Might as well do what you can then.
  • 12:48 - 12:49
    Don't know, though.
  • 12:49 - 12:53
At some point, you might do band activities without all of the members.
  • 12:54 - 12:58
That's something that's the least likely to happen.
  • 12:59 - 13:02
    That's inconceivable.
  • 13:02 - 13:05
We can't do anything if the four of us aren't doing it together.
  • 13:06 - 13:10
-That's why SCANDAL's truly an interesting band.
    -It is.
  • 13:12 - 13:16
It's like, "What'll happen in the future?"
  • 13:17 - 13:18
    Yeah.
  • 13:18 - 13:22
-There's no other choice but to turn our lives into music.
    -Yeah. That's awesome.
  • 13:22 - 13:26
It's all uncharted territory after we set the Guinness World Record.
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    It's like, "What'll happen?"

(It'll be like an experiment after August 21st this year)
  • 13:30 - 13:33
It'll be hard to find out how to do that.
  • 13:34 - 13:37
-It's like, is it doable or not?
    -Yeah.
  • 13:37 - 13:40
(17 years of our activities are being meticulously inspected)
  • 13:40 - 13:42
Who is the current record holder?
  • 13:43 - 13:47
Well, no one has petitioned Guinness about it before,
  • 13:47 - 13:48
so there's no official record for it.
  • 13:48 - 13:51
    We'll be establishing the record.
  • 13:51 - 13:55
SCANDAL will be creating the category.
  • 13:56 - 14:00
-Are periods of hiatus included in this?
    -Yes.
  • 14:04 - 14:07
    That is included.
  • 14:07 - 14:10
-You guys have never done that.
    -Yeah.
  • 14:11 - 14:13
    No member changes, either.
  • 14:17 - 14:19
There aren't any other [bands like that].
  • 14:19 - 14:22
    This would usually be impossible.
  • 14:22 - 14:29
I think it's impressive even for bands to be together for 5 or 6 years.
  • 14:31 - 14:37
It seems like they'd be strict about what a "hiatus" would be.
  • 14:37 - 14:40
But SCANDAL has never stopped their activities even once.
  • 14:41 - 14:43
    We're endlessly on tour.
  • 14:43 - 14:47
You do always tour every year.
  • 14:50 - 14:56
It tends to be common for veteran artists only release things every 2-3 years.
  • 14:56 - 14:58
They also don't tour because they don't release anything.
  • 14:58 - 15:01
I kind of admire that too, though.
  • 15:01 - 15:05
Like, "Wow, it's been three years? They're so cool!"
  • 15:05 - 15:07
    When we established "her,"
  • 15:07 - 15:11
we talked about how it'd be good to release an album in three years or so.
  • 15:11 - 15:14
But we've released quite a bit since then!
  • 15:14 - 15:16
We're coming out with a lot of them.

(We have 10 albums out right now)
  • 15:17 - 15:20
We've always done things at a rookie artist's pace.
  • 15:22 - 15:24
    -I'll go check on things.
    -Okay.
  • 15:26 - 15:28
It's something to be grateful for.
  • 15:32 - 15:38
I really like the two albums that SCANDAL has released under "her."
  • 15:38 - 15:40
    You've always said that.
  • 15:41 - 15:43
I am with Victor, after all.
  • 15:45 - 15:48
That's part of it, of course.
  • 15:49 - 15:51
    But it is impressive.
  • 15:51 - 15:54
You've always said that at meetings.
  • 15:54 - 15:56
    It makes me happy.
  • 15:56 - 15:59
I also really like our recent songs.
  • 16:00 - 16:03
All of the things people say about them are interesting.
  • 16:03 - 16:07
It's like, "They're still saying things like that?"
  • 16:07 - 16:11
I think there's a whole different level of progress for those who understand [our songs].
  • 16:12 - 16:15
    This tour really was amazing.
  • 16:15 - 16:18
