Affinity: Beyond Friendship

  • 0:13 - 0:15
Many draw back in front of affinity.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    It is in fact
a lot easier and less demanding to sign up
  • 0:18 - 0:23
to something, be it an organization, a permanent
    assembly or
  • 0:23 - 0:27
an environment and to take up and reproduce formal
    characteristics,
  • 0:27 - 0:32
rather than undertaking a long and never
exhausted research for comrades with whom
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    to share
    ideas, analysis and eventual projects.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
Because affinity is exactly this: a reciprocal knowledge
  • 0:40 - 0:43
between comrades, shared analysis that lead to perspectives
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    of action.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
    Affinity is therefore directed
    on one hand towards theoretical
  • 0:50 - 0:54
deepening and on the other towards
    intervention in social conflictuality.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
It aspires to the sharing of ideas and methods,
    and it
  • 1:01 - 1:05
does not have as a goal an infinite growth.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    For some
comrades, one of the main preoccupations,
  • 1:07 - 1:10
even though often well hidden, seems to remain
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    the number.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    How many are we?
  • 1:13 - 1:15
What should we do to be
    more?
  • 1:15 - 1:20
From the polarization on such a question and
from the constatation that today we aren’t
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    many,
given by the fact that many others do not
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    share our ideas
    deriving the
  • 1:25 - 1:30
    conclusion
that we should, to grow numerically, avoid
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    putting
too hard of an accent on certain ideas.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
Affinity is not the same thing as friendship.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    Of
course the two do not exclude each other,
  • 1:41 - 1:45
The search for affinity occurs on an interpersonal
    level.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
It is not a collective event, a group affair,
    where
  • 1:48 - 1:51
it is always easier to follow than to think
    for oneself.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
The deepening of affinity is evidently a matter
    of
  • 1:54 - 1:58
thought and action, but in the end affinity
    is not the
  • 1:58 - 2:02
strictly about carrying out an action together,
    but rather a
  • 2:02 - 2:05
starting point from which to then pass to
    action.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
It is true that the search and the
deepening of affinity require a lot of time
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    and energy,
and that therefore it is not possible to generalize
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    it to
    all comrades.
  • 2:14 - 2:19
The anarchist movement of a country, of
a city or even of a neighbourhood cannot become
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    one
    big affinity group.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
It is not about enlarging different
    affinity groups with more comrades,
  • 2:25 - 2:29
but to make possible the multiplication
    of autonomous affinity groups.
  • 2:29 - 2:34
The search, the elaboration and the deepening
of affinity leads to small groups of
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    comrades that know each other,
share analysis and pass together to action.
