The refugee crisis is a test of our character

  • Not Synced
I'm going to speak to you
    about the global refugee crisis,
  • Not Synced
and my aim is to show you that this crisis
  • Not Synced
    is manageable, not unsolvable,
  • Not Synced
but also show you that this is as much
about us and who we are
  • Not Synced
as it is a trial of the refugees
    on the front line.
  • Not Synced
For me, this is not just
    a professional obligation,
  • Not Synced
because I run an NGO supporting refugees
and displaced people around the world.
  • Not Synced
    It's personal.
  • Not Synced
    I love this picture.
  • Not Synced
That really handsome guy on the right,
  • Not Synced
    that's not me.
  • Not Synced
That's my dad, Ralph, in London, in 1940
  • Not Synced
    with his father Samuel.
  • Not Synced
They were Jewish refugees from Belgium.
  • Not Synced
They fled the day the Nazis invaded.
  • Not Synced
And I love this picture too.
  • Not Synced
It's a group of refugee children
  • Not Synced
arriving in England in 1946 from Poland.
  • Not Synced
And in the middle is my mother, Mariam.
  • Not Synced
She was sent to start a new life
  • Not Synced
    in a new country
  • Not Synced
    on her own
  • Not Synced
    at the age of 12.
  • Not Synced
    I know this:
  • Not Synced
if Britain had not admitted refugees
  • Not Synced
    in the 1940s,
  • Not Synced
I certainly would not be here today.
  • Not Synced
Yet 70 years on, the wheel
    has come full circle.
  • Not Synced
The sound is of walls being built,
  • Not Synced
    vengeful political rhetoric,
  • Not Synced
humanitarian values and principles on fire
  • Not Synced
    in the very countries that
70 years ago said never again
  • Not Synced
    to statelessness and hopelessness
  • Not Synced
    for the victims of war.
  • Not Synced
    Last year, every minute,
  • Not Synced
    24 more people were displaced
    from their homes
  • Not Synced
    by conflict, violence, and persecution:
  • Not Synced
another chemical weapon attack in Syria,
  • Not Synced
the Taliban on the rampage in Afghanistan,
  • Not Synced
    girls driven from their school
in northeast Nigeria by Boko Haram.
  • Not Synced
    These are not people moving
    to another country
  • Not Synced
    to get a better life.
  • Not Synced
    They're fleeing for their lives.
  • Not Synced
    It's a real tragedy
  • Not Synced
that the world's most famous refugee
can't come to speak to you here today.
  • Not Synced
Many of you will know this picture.
  • Not Synced
    It shows the lifeless body
  • Not Synced
    of five-year old Alain Kurdi
