Educating girls - BBC News

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    In India, three million girls
    are not in school.
  • 0:05 - 0:08
That's one in three girls aged 10-14.
  • 0:08 - 0:12
But 'Educate Girls' is changing that.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    The prevailing mindset is
  • 0:19 - 0:23
that my goat is an asset
and my girl is a liability.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    And it's really about
    changing that mindset.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    My name is Bhagwanti.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
Before I go to school, I have
    to do the housework:
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    cook meals, wash up,
    take the goats to graze.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
Sometimes I clean the house too.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    First and foremost,
in every village where we enter
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    we find a community volunteer.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    Our volunteers are young,
    they're educated, they're passionate.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    They themselves really
    want to see a change.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
They go door-to-door, and they find
every single girl who's out of school.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
Then, they actually sit with the community
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    and make community-based
    enrolment plans
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    for bringing these girls
    back into school.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    Community volunteers or 'Balikas'
    work with village schools...
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    to ensure they are safe
    and have girl's toilets.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
They also help tutor the girls.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
So, then our 'Team Balika' volunteers
    come inside
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    the government school classroom
  • 1:29 - 1:32
and they run a remedial in Hindi,
    English and Maths
  • 1:32 - 1:34
to make sure that all the children
    - girls and boys,
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    are actually achieving
    the learning outcomes required.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    It's about every single girl
    coming to school.
  • 1:45 - 1:49
    It's about every single girl
    contributing to the changing world.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    It's about every single girl
contributing to the change in the family,
  • 1:54 - 1:58
and it's about every single girl
    contributing to the changes
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    in community at large.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
We are talking about better health,
    better income.
  • 2:03 - 2:08
We are talking about better education,
so it's for every single child.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
There's like 50, 60 per cent of the girls
    in Rajasthan who are married
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    bellow the age of 18.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    Nationwide that, child marriage
    the percentage is very high.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
A lot of the children also,
    about 10-15 per cent
  • 2:24 - 2:26
that are married below the age of 10.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
I was married off by my parents at 14.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
I was studying in 8th standard.
    The boy's parents had agreed
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    to continue my studies but
as soon as my exams results came through
  • 2:35 - 2:39
they backed off from their promise.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
Neelam is one of the 10,000 Balikas
    at Educated Girls.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
They have helped two million children.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
I want to become a teacher after studying
    and teach other girls
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    because when you are educated
    you have courage,
  • 2:56 - 3:00
can stand on your own feet,
    find a job
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    and support your family financially.
  • 3:04 - 3:08
Every extra year of school can boost
    a woman's income by up to 20%.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
In the last 10 years, I'm really proud
to say that we have found
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    and brought back to school
    150,000 out-of-school girls
  • 3:14 - 3:19
    that are now connected
and are attending school and learning.
