Kids! Say NO WAY To ZOO DAY!!!

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    Hi there!
  • 0:01 - 0:03
    If you’re a kid...
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    and you love meeting really
    cool animals in real life
  • 0:06 - 0:08
and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    then this video is
    for you!
  • 0:15 - 0:19
Hi it's Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome
    to another vegan nugget.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
I’m so excited to finally be making another
    video just for you.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
We’ve covered a LOT so far in my videos
for kids, like why we don’t drink milk,
  • 0:27 - 0:35
eat meat or eggs or honey or wear wool, how
you can be a superhero by being vegan, how
  • 0:35 - 0:39
fish have feelings, and we’ve even heard
    from real vegan kids!
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    Whew!
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    That’s getting long.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
You can watch all of those videos later if
you want linked there and in the video description
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    below.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Now just like in my other videos I promise
that I’m not going to show you anything
  • 0:51 - 0:56
scary, that I’ll tell you the truth no matter
what and that I won’t talk down to you,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
cause you’re probably smarter than us adults!
  • 0:59 - 1:01
Today we’re going to talk about the zoo!
  • 1:01 - 1:04
If you’re like me, you love animals.
  • 1:04 - 1:10
And the idea of getting to meet amazing animals
like lions, giraffes, elephants and monkeys
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    face-to-face is pretty exciting!
  • 1:12 - 1:16
What’s even better is that adults think
    it’s a great idea too.
  • 1:16 - 1:22
A lot of kids go to the zoo with their family
or friends, or in school on a class fieldtrip.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
So why would anyone not want to go to the
    zoo?
  • 1:24 - 1:28
Well, there are a number of reasons why vegans
    don’t go to the zoo.
  • 1:28 - 1:33
If you don’t know already, being vegan means
you don’t eat animals or anything that comes
  • 1:33 - 1:38
out of them like milk, eggs, cheese, or honey
or wear anything from their bodies, like wool
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    or leather or silk.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
Now this may be a little confusing at first.
  • 1:42 - 1:47
I mean if vegans love animals so much, why
wouldn’t we want to go see them?
  • 1:47 - 1:53
Well, being vegan isn’t just about not eating
or wearing animals—it’s also about not
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    using them for our entertainment.
  • 1:55 - 2:00
So it’s actually because of how much we
love animals that we don’t go to the zoo.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
Let’s go over some of the reasons together!
  • 2:03 - 2:07
While there are some pretty horrible zoos
out there where all of the animals are in
  • 2:07 - 2:11
really tiny cages, you may have seen zoos
where the animals seem to have a lot of space
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    to move around.
  • 2:13 - 2:18
But what may seem like a whole lot of room
to you and me can still be really small for
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    them!
  • 2:19 - 2:23
In nature, some animals, like elephants, will
    walk for miles every day.
  • 2:23 - 2:28
And birds will migrate thousands of miles
every year, with one bird called the arctic
  • 2:28 - 2:34
tern, flying up to 90,000 kilometers, or nearly
    56,000 miles.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
That’s more than going around the world
    two times!
  • 2:37 - 2:43
When you look at it that way, even the biggest
cages at the nicest zoos look really, really
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    small.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
Just imagine being stuck in the same room
    day after day after day.
  • 2:48 - 2:53
I’m sure that even if you had the coolest
toys, sooner or later, you’d start feeling
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    a little crazy!
  • 2:54 - 2:57
And that’s just how the animals feel.
  • 2:57 - 3:02
Only it’s not a day or two—it’s every
single day for their entire lives.
  • 3:02 - 3:07
If you’ve ever been to a zoo, you may have
seen tigers, or panthers walking back and
  • 3:07 - 3:14
forth, or elephants swaying side to side,
monkeys climbing up and down again and again,
  • 3:14 - 3:17
or other animals doing the same motions over
    and over and over.
  • 3:17 - 3:22
This is something called zoochosis, which
basically means these animals are going crazy
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    from being locked up.
  • 3:24 - 3:29
We’ve talked in other videos about how animals
have feelings just like you and me, even if
  • 3:29 - 3:32
they express them in ways we may not understand.
  • 3:32 - 3:37
Well, they can also get depressed, anxious,
and even become psychotic when they are in
  • 3:37 - 3:42
really stressful situations, just like you
    or I would.
  • 3:42 - 3:47
Some animals in zoos were trapped in the wild,
taken away from their family and home.
  • 3:47 - 3:48
Imagine how scary that would be!
  • 3:48 - 3:54
Now you may be wondering, if zoos are so bad
for the animals, why do so many people support
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    them?
  • 3:55 - 4:00
Well, lots of people think zoos are a fun
place where kids can go to learn about animals
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    and nature.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
I have an entire video about zoos and education
that you can watch later here, but from what
  • 4:05 - 4:10
we’ve already talked about, you can see
why this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
  • 4:10 - 4:16
I mean going to the zoo to learn about animals
and nature is like riding in bumper cars to
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    learn how to drive!
  • 4:17 - 4:21
Either way, you’re not going to really get
    the right impression!
  • 4:21 - 4:25
People also say that zoos are important because
    of their conservation programs.
  • 4:25 - 4:29
You see, a lot of different kinds of animals
are in danger of going extinct—and some
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    already have.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
Humans have destroyed their homes, polluted
their habitats, and hunted them until there
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    are only a few left.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
Now I’m sure you know that if you hurt someone,
or if you’ve done something wrong, it’s
  • 4:40 - 4:44
important to take responsibility and try your
    best to make it better.
  • 4:44 - 4:48
Well that’s what conservation programs are
    about—they help these animals repopulate,
  • 4:48 - 4:52
meaning grow in numbers, so that they don’t
    disappear forever.
  • 4:52 - 4:57
This is of course a very important thing for
us to do, but zoos are just not the place
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    to do it!
  • 4:58 - 5:02
These animals need to be as close to nature
as possible, so that when the time comes,
  • 5:02 - 5:04
they can return to the wild.
  • 5:04 - 5:09
Just like you and I won’t learn much about
how animals act in nature at a zoo, neither
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    will the animals born there!
  • 5:11 - 5:16
We can help endangered animals without sticking
them in a cage for people to look at.
  • 5:16 - 5:19
The sad truth is that zoos are businesses.
  • 5:19 - 5:24
I know I’ve said this before in a lot of
my videos for you, but so many times, the
  • 5:24 - 5:30
strange and even really awful things adults
    do is because of money.
  • 5:30 - 5:33
And I’ll be honest, it can be hard not going
to the zoo if it’s one of your favorite
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    things!
  • 5:34 - 5:39
But I know you’re old enough and smart enough
to know that just because you want something,
  • 5:39 - 5:42
doesn’t mean it’s okay to hurt someone
    else to get it.
  • 5:42 - 5:48
This is something we adults are usually pretty
good at teaching, but not at all something
  • 5:48 - 5:49
    we’re good at doing!
  • 5:49 - 5:54
Sometimes the best way to love animals is
to leave them alone to be animals!
  • 5:54 - 5:58
You can still learn all about them in their
natural habitat, and much better than you
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    could in a zoo!
  • 6:00 - 6:04
There are so many books, TV shows, and movies
that bring you all over the world to see all
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    kinds of amazing animals!
  • 6:06 - 6:11
You can even still meet some of them in real
life at places like farm animal sanctuaries.
  • 6:11 - 6:15
I’ve included links on the blog post for
this video to help you find places to meet
  • 6:15 - 6:18
animals and how to learn more about them!
  • 6:18 - 6:23
You can be a friend to the animals all over
the world when you say NO to zoos!
  • 6:23 - 6:27
And just like we talked about in my video
about being a superhero, when you don’t
  • 6:27 - 6:31
eat animals either, you’re also helping
the environment, so they can stay in their
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    homes where they belong.
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    Not in cages or enclosures.
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    But with their family.
  • 6:37 - 6:38
    Just like it should be.
  • 6:38 - 6:39
    Now that’s pretty amazing.
  • 6:39 - 6:42
I hope this video was helpful.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
Let me know what you thought in the comments
and if you have other things you’d like
  • 6:45 - 6:47
me to cover, feel free to tell me!
  • 6:47 - 6:51
If you liked this video, do give it a thumbs
up and share it around to help other kids
