Kids! Say NO WAY To ZOO DAY!!!
-
0:00 - 0:01Hi there!
-
0:01 - 0:03If you’re a kid...
-
0:03 - 0:06and you love meeting really
cool animals in real life -
0:06 - 0:08and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?
-
0:09 - 0:11then this video is
for you! -
0:15 - 0:19Hi it's Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome
to another vegan nugget. -
0:19 - 0:23I’m so excited to finally be making another
video just for you. -
0:23 - 0:27We’ve covered a LOT so far in my videos
for kids, like why we don’t drink milk, -
0:27 - 0:35eat meat or eggs or honey or wear wool, how
you can be a superhero by being vegan, how -
0:35 - 0:39fish have feelings, and we’ve even heard
from real vegan kids! -
0:39 - 0:40Whew!
-
0:40 - 0:43That’s getting long.
-
0:43 - 0:47You can watch all of those videos later if
you want linked there and in the video description -
0:47 - 0:48below.
-
0:48 - 0:51Now just like in my other videos I promise
that I’m not going to show you anything -
0:51 - 0:56scary, that I’ll tell you the truth no matter
what and that I won’t talk down to you, -
0:56 - 0:59cause you’re probably smarter than us adults!
-
0:59 - 1:01Today we’re going to talk about the zoo!
-
1:01 - 1:04If you’re like me, you love animals.
-
1:04 - 1:10And the idea of getting to meet amazing animals
like lions, giraffes, elephants and monkeys -
1:10 - 1:12face-to-face is pretty exciting!
-
1:12 - 1:16What’s even better is that adults think
it’s a great idea too. -
1:16 - 1:22A lot of kids go to the zoo with their family
or friends, or in school on a class fieldtrip. -
1:22 - 1:24So why would anyone not want to go to the
zoo? -
1:24 - 1:28Well, there are a number of reasons why vegans
don’t go to the zoo. -
1:28 - 1:33If you don’t know already, being vegan means
you don’t eat animals or anything that comes -
1:33 - 1:38out of them like milk, eggs, cheese, or honey
or wear anything from their bodies, like wool -
1:38 - 1:40or leather or silk.
-
1:40 - 1:42Now this may be a little confusing at first.
-
1:42 - 1:47I mean if vegans love animals so much, why
wouldn’t we want to go see them? -
1:47 - 1:53Well, being vegan isn’t just about not eating
or wearing animals—it’s also about not -
1:53 - 1:55using them for our entertainment.
-
1:55 - 2:00So it’s actually because of how much we
love animals that we don’t go to the zoo. -
2:00 - 2:03Let’s go over some of the reasons together!
-
2:03 - 2:07While there are some pretty horrible zoos
out there where all of the animals are in -
2:07 - 2:11really tiny cages, you may have seen zoos
where the animals seem to have a lot of space -
2:11 - 2:13to move around.
-
2:13 - 2:18But what may seem like a whole lot of room
to you and me can still be really small for -
2:18 - 2:19them!
-
2:19 - 2:23In nature, some animals, like elephants, will
walk for miles every day. -
2:23 - 2:28And birds will migrate thousands of miles
every year, with one bird called the arctic -
2:28 - 2:34tern, flying up to 90,000 kilometers, or nearly
56,000 miles. -
2:34 - 2:37That’s more than going around the world
two times! -
2:37 - 2:43When you look at it that way, even the biggest
cages at the nicest zoos look really, really -
2:43 - 2:44small.
-
2:44 - 2:48Just imagine being stuck in the same room
day after day after day. -
2:48 - 2:53I’m sure that even if you had the coolest
toys, sooner or later, you’d start feeling -
2:53 - 2:54a little crazy!
-
2:54 - 2:57And that’s just how the animals feel.
-
2:57 - 3:02Only it’s not a day or two—it’s every
single day for their entire lives. -
3:02 - 3:07If you’ve ever been to a zoo, you may have
seen tigers, or panthers walking back and -
3:07 - 3:14forth, or elephants swaying side to side,
monkeys climbing up and down again and again, -
3:14 - 3:17or other animals doing the same motions over
and over and over. -
3:17 - 3:22This is something called zoochosis, which
basically means these animals are going crazy -
3:22 - 3:24from being locked up.
-
3:24 - 3:29We’ve talked in other videos about how animals
have feelings just like you and me, even if -
3:29 - 3:32they express them in ways we may not understand.
-
3:32 - 3:37Well, they can also get depressed, anxious,
and even become psychotic when they are in -
3:37 - 3:42really stressful situations, just like you
or I would. -
3:42 - 3:47Some animals in zoos were trapped in the wild,
taken away from their family and home. -
3:47 - 3:48Imagine how scary that would be!
-
3:48 - 3:54Now you may be wondering, if zoos are so bad
for the animals, why do so many people support -
3:54 - 3:55them?
-
3:55 - 4:00Well, lots of people think zoos are a fun
place where kids can go to learn about animals -
4:00 - 4:01and nature.
-
4:01 - 4:05I have an entire video about zoos and education
that you can watch later here, but from what -
4:05 - 4:10we’ve already talked about, you can see
why this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. -
4:10 - 4:16I mean going to the zoo to learn about animals
and nature is like riding in bumper cars to -
4:16 - 4:17learn how to drive!
-
4:17 - 4:21Either way, you’re not going to really get
the right impression! -
4:21 - 4:25People also say that zoos are important because
of their conservation programs. -
4:25 - 4:29You see, a lot of different kinds of animals
are in danger of going extinct—and some -
4:29 - 4:31already have.
-
4:31 - 4:35Humans have destroyed their homes, polluted
their habitats, and hunted them until there -
4:35 - 4:37are only a few left.
-
4:37 - 4:40Now I’m sure you know that if you hurt someone,
or if you’ve done something wrong, it’s -
4:40 - 4:44important to take responsibility and try your
best to make it better. -
4:44 - 4:48Well that’s what conservation programs are
about—they help these animals repopulate, -
4:48 - 4:52meaning grow in numbers, so that they don’t
disappear forever. -
4:52 - 4:57This is of course a very important thing for
us to do, but zoos are just not the place -
4:57 - 4:58to do it!
-
4:58 - 5:02These animals need to be as close to nature
as possible, so that when the time comes, -
5:02 - 5:04they can return to the wild.
-
5:04 - 5:09Just like you and I won’t learn much about
how animals act in nature at a zoo, neither -
5:09 - 5:11will the animals born there!
-
5:11 - 5:16We can help endangered animals without sticking
them in a cage for people to look at. -
5:16 - 5:19The sad truth is that zoos are businesses.
-
5:19 - 5:24I know I’ve said this before in a lot of
my videos for you, but so many times, the -
5:24 - 5:30strange and even really awful things adults
do is because of money. -
5:30 - 5:33And I’ll be honest, it can be hard not going
to the zoo if it’s one of your favorite -
5:33 - 5:34things!
-
5:34 - 5:39But I know you’re old enough and smart enough
to know that just because you want something, -
5:39 - 5:42doesn’t mean it’s okay to hurt someone
else to get it. -
5:42 - 5:48This is something we adults are usually pretty
good at teaching, but not at all something -
5:48 - 5:49we’re good at doing!
-
5:49 - 5:54Sometimes the best way to love animals is
to leave them alone to be animals! -
5:54 - 5:58You can still learn all about them in their
natural habitat, and much better than you -
5:58 - 6:00could in a zoo!
-
6:00 - 6:04There are so many books, TV shows, and movies
that bring you all over the world to see all -
6:04 - 6:06kinds of amazing animals!
-
6:06 - 6:11You can even still meet some of them in real
life at places like farm animal sanctuaries. -
6:11 - 6:15I’ve included links on the blog post for
this video to help you find places to meet -
6:15 - 6:18animals and how to learn more about them!
-
6:18 - 6:23You can be a friend to the animals all over
the world when you say NO to zoos! -
6:23 - 6:27And just like we talked about in my video
about being a superhero, when you don’t -
6:27 - 6:31eat animals either, you’re also helping
the environment, so they can stay in their -
6:31 - 6:33homes where they belong.
-
6:33 - 6:35Not in cages or enclosures.
-
6:35 - 6:37But with their family.
-
6:37 - 6:38Just like it should be.
-
6:38 - 6:39Now that’s pretty amazing.
-
6:39 - 6:42I hope this video was helpful.
