Tropical cyclones are powerful, rotating storms that form over warm ocean water. They build strength through rising moist air and heat released during condensation. The Coriolis effect causes them to spin—counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, clockwise in the Southern. These storms weaken over land or cool water but can still cause severe wind and flooding.
