    I started "Only Boys Aloud"

    just coming up for two years ago,

    because I come from
    the South Wales Valleys

    from a small community
    called New Tredegar.

    And
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    when I was growing up,
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    it was a very proud part of the world,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    with a lot of industry,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    with a lot of ambition,
  • 0:30 - 0:34
    with a sustainable economy.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    In the middle of the '80s,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    that was basically taken away
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    when the industries collapsed
    for a variety of reasons
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    and left an enormous void
  • 0:46 - 0:50
    in the middle of the part
    of the world that I call home.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    Consequently,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    there are huge problems of unemployment
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    in the South Wales Valleys,
  • 0:57 - 1:02
    and all of the problems
    that come with that also.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    The biggest, I think,
    and the most destructive,
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    is a lack of aspiration.
  • 1:08 - 1:14
    And I wanted to use singing
    to encourage lads from this area
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    to aspire to be something.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    So our strapline is "inspiring to aspire."
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    I believe most passionately
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    in the transformative power
    of community singing,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    because in our increasingly virtual world,
  • 1:30 - 1:35
    we have fewer and fewer opportunities
    of coming together physically,
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    and interacting with fellow human beings.
  • 1:38 - 1:44
    So "Only Boys Aloud"
    is designed to encourage these lads
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    to leave their Xboxes,
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    to leave Facebook,
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    and come together.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    Of course, Eric Whitacre has very famously
    with his fabulous virtual choir
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    done this online.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    But I passionately believe
    that there is no substitute
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    for getting together
    and having a damn good sing.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
    The tradition of male choir singing
    is very prevalent in South Wales.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    We still have a proliferation
    of male choirs,
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    but they are getting older,
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    and there is an argument
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    that male choir singing
    is irrelevant now.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    I completely disagree with all of this.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    I believe something that unifies anybody
    as choral singing does
  • 2:20 - 2:25
    is increasingly more needed
    in our world today.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    "Why boys?" is something
    I often get asked.
  • 2:28 - 2:34
    Well, because of the very strong tradition
    of male choirs in Wales.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    That's first and foremost.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    Also there is a huge disparity
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    between the number of boys
    who choose to sing
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    and the number of girls
    that choose to sing.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    And I think that's a problem generally,
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    but in a very masculine
    environment, like South Wales.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    Although I have to say,
    in South Wales, ma'ams rule.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    It's a very matriarchal society,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    but at the same time, there are
    lots of pressures on boys
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    not to do something
    that isn't seen as "macho."
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    So with "Only Boys Aloud,"
    we started 10 choirs,
  • 3:05 - 3:09
    predominantly in rugby clubs,
    around the South Wales area,
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    covering a nine-hundred-square-mile area,
  • 3:13 - 3:18
    where the idea is that no boy
    is fewer than 15 or 20 minutes away
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    from his local rehearsal.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    So these choirs enrich
    their individual communities,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    but we also bring them together
    to do large-scale events,
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    and we have about half of them here today.
  • 3:32 - 3:36
    Well, over 200 lads
    between the ages of 14 and 19
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    have engaged with "Only Boys Aloud"
    in the last two years.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    And I'm delighted to say,
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    with the support of the Welsh Government
    and the Principality Building Society,
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    back in Wales,
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    we are able to look forward to a future
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    where we've signed an agreement
    for three years of sponsorship,
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    because I believe this work
    is absolutely fundamental,
  • 3:55 - 4:00
    especially as young men are often blamed
    for the problems in our society.

    I think the lads on stage here will prove
  • 4:05 - 4:09
    that, far from problems,
    there is so much good
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    and there is something very beautiful
  • 4:11 - 4:16
    about boys coming together
    and just singing.

    It was supposed to be
    a big surprise revealed

    when we lifted the curtain,

    and there were loads of them there.

    But you all saw the rehearsals
    so that's gone out of the window.

    Can I introduce firstly our two soloists,
    who are going to sing the first piece.

    One of the things we want to do
    is we want to move the choir forward,

    but we also really respect our roots,
    and where we come from.

    And that's why the first song
    we've chosen to sing this afternoon

    is a song called "Calon Lan,"
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    which really is a prayer for good heart,
  • 4:50 - 4:55
    because the words say, "a good heart
    can sing all day and all night."

Description:

In 2000, Tim Rhys-Evans set up a Welsh male voice choir called Only Men Aloud, a contemporary take on the Welsh choral tradition. Eight years later, it was voted the nation's favourite choir when it won BBC 1's Last Choir Standing. In 2010, as part of his mission to safeguard Welsh singing traditions, and to keep choral singing alive in the communities in which it first developed, Tim formed Only Boys Aloud. It's open to all boys between the ages of 14 and 19, without audition, and there are now nine separate choirs, in nine South Wales towns. Together they form Only Boys Aloud. Mentored by the adult members of Only Men Aloud, part of Tim's mission is to inspire the boys in other areas of their lives and one way he does this is by providing unique performance opportunities, such as TEDxObserver.
