What to Do in Dubai | 36 Hours Travel Videos | The New York Times

  • 0:04 - 0:08
    Dubai, it's a city
    that you come visit.
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    It's young.
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    It's vibrant.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    It's energetic.
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    It's cosmopolitan
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    Everyday you wake up,
    it's sun,
  • 0:16 - 0:17
you can go to the beach.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    (inaudible)
    and beautiful,
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    beautiful parks,
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    incredible architecture.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    Locals in Dubai are
    some of the warmest,
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    friendliest people.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    All people are here.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    The population
    of Dubai are two million.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    More than 92% of these
    are foreigners.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    It's a dream city.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    Anything you can dream
  • 0:37 - 0:39
in Dubai, you can do it.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
    Zaroub means
    the narrow streets
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    or the alleys
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    that Syria, Lebanon
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    and Palestine
    are famous for.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    And there are small
    restaurants
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    in every one of
    those narrow alleys.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
    We wanted to join
    all these
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    small restaurants
    in one spot.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    My favorite dish
    is the shawarma.
  • 1:01 - 1:06
    The meat shawarma
    is a sandwich,
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    wrapped in either saj
    bread
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    or Lebanese pita bread.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    We add pomegranate
    molasses,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    and that's our specialty.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    Other restaurants
    don't use it
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    in their shawarma.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    We were the first
    place in
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    Dubai to really have
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    a restaurant
    in the middle
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    of the industrial area.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    Dubai is very well known
    for its five star hotels,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    and its shopping malls,
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    but not so well
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    known for its food
    and dining scene,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    in a more grungy sort
    of way.
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    I change the menu
    every two to
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    three weeks,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    so that people
    can come and try
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    something new every time.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    Dubai is one of my
    favorite places to eat.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    It's always
    a great atmosphere.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    Everybody was doing
    fusions,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    but we never heard
    of an Arabian fusion.
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    Our food is exquisite,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    our design is
    captivating.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    We deconstructed
    that felafel sandwich
  • 2:01 - 2:03
to form it into a salad.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    We took the regular
    chickpeas in a
  • 2:06 - 2:06
    felafel.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    There's a compressed
    cucumber with it.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    I would love Qbara
    to give an
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    impression that
    the Arabian culture
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    has much more to give
    than what is
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    basically perceived
    by the world today.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    Most of the places
    of Dubai are
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    new and modern.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    So where is that
    tradition of Dubai?
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    It is here.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    We have saffron, spices,
    mixed spices of
  • 2:36 - 2:36
    all kinds, perfumes,
    incense--
  • 2:36 - 2:42
    everything you want
    we have it here.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    If you want to see
    a traditional Eastern
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    city, you come
    to the spice market.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    SPM,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    it's a very dynamic,
    contemporary,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    vibrant art place.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    It all started
    with the private
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    collection
    of Mr. Salsali.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    We do have a collection
    of over 800
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    art works.
    Artists from Iran,
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    European artists,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    and American artists.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    There is a very,
    very vibrant scene
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    going on here.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    And I would love
    people to know that
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    Dubai became the art
    spot of the
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    Middle East right now.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    Dubai taught us
    to be different.
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    Burj Khalifa
    is the tallest tower
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    on earth.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    From the front angle
    you can see the
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    old Dubai, the new Dubai
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    and the new upcoming
    projects in Dubai.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    If you go back
    43 years, all Dubai
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    was just a desert.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    Building the tallest
    tower is not only
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    an achievement,
    it's American.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    Everything in Dubai
    goes bigger {unclear)
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    The biggest nightclub and
    the biggest restaurant
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    and the biggest this
    and the biggest that.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
We wanted to kind of go
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    against the current,
    and we said,
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    you know what,
    why don't we
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    open something small.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    We were actually
    the first open rooftop
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    lounge to open in Dubai.
  • 4:09 - 4:10
    We did a whole
    new signature cocktail
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    menu for this season.
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    One of my absolute
    favorite of our
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    signature cocktails
    is one called Say Yes.
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    Visually stunning.
    It comes
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    with this ice bowl,
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    which has a rose petal
    frozen into it.
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    I've never met anyone
    who doesn't like it.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    2013, we inaugurated the
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    music hall of Dubai.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    The idea is to bring
    culture
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    to nightlife.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
On the stage of the music
    hall, you have
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    more than 12 bands
    per night,
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    each band
    only performing for
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    10 to 12 minutes.
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    It's a unique world
    night.
  • 4:46 - 4:50
    In one night,
    flamenco, Cuban music
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    jazz, rock,
    Oriental music.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    We are shifting
    from different worlds
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    within 2 to 3 minutes.
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    I like the people
    to feel that they
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    travel in space
    and in time
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    Pacha is one of
    the largest nightlife
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    brands in the world.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    We change
    our entertainment team
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    every 8 weeks or so.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    So we have everything
    from singers to
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    dancing acts,
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    to jugglers,
    to aerial acrobats,
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    that kind of stuff.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    But we do have
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    other aspects to
    us as well.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
    We've got a very
    popular roof terrace,
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    which has great views.
It's a great place to be.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    It's a very very fun
    atmosphere.
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    Very vibrant.
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    Full of people
    who are generally
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    happy and here
    for a good time.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    Dubai is a cultural
    hotpot really.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    There's just so much
    to do here,
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    so much to see.
  • 5:39 - 5:40
    You could spend
    a lifetime and not
  • 5:40 - 5:45
    get everything done.
