Gun control and risk research in the US

  • 0:00 - 0:09
In 2009, 11,495 people were shot and killed
in gun-related homicides in the US.
  • 0:09 - 0:15
In comparison, there were 173 gun homicides
in Canada in the same year,
  • 0:15 - 0:19
30 in Australia, and 18 in the United Kingdom.
  • 0:19 - 0:25
    Of these 11,495 unlawful killings,
  • 0:25 - 0:31
234 of them were children 14 years of age or younger.
  • 0:31 - 0:38
Understanding why these deaths occur and how to
    prevent them requires more research
  • 0:38 - 0:43
into the risks and benefits of gun
ownership and use in today's society.
  • 0:43 - 0:50
In 1996, the leading US federal research agency
addressing gun deaths and their prevention
  • 0:50 - 0:54
was given an effective cease and desist order.
  • 0:54 - 0:59
Language was introduced into the agency's appropriations
    bill that stated:
  • 0:59 - 1:06
"none of the funds made available for injury prevention
and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • 1:06 - 1:12
may be used, in whole or in part, to
    advocate or promote gun control"
  • 1:12 - 1:19
Under this clause, it is unlawful for the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • 1:19 - 1:24
to fund research that is perceived as promoting
    gun control in any way.
  • 1:24 - 1:29
This clause remains in place to this day.
