Oprah Winfrey Acceptance Speech - 1998
-
1:58 - 2:03We are all beacosn of light for each other.
-
2:04 - 2:08From the beginning, being a colored, then negro
-
2:08 - 2:15then black, then African-American child.
-
2:15 - 2:19Growing up in Mississippi my prayer was, for as
-
2:19 - 2:23long as I could remember, "God use me."
-
2:23 - 2:26"Use me. Use this life. I don't know what the future holds
-
2:26 - 2:30for me. But I know that there is a vision for my life
-
2:30 - 2:35that is greater than my imagination can hold, use me, use me, what would you have me to do?"
-
2:35 - 2:38And that dream, that desire
-
2:38 - 2:41that prayer, brought me somehow to television.
-
2:41 - 2:45And to be able to use this tremendous vehicle of television
-
2:45 - 2:48to go into people's homes, and somehow
-
2:48 - 2:52be able to touch their lives, and be the beacon that Barbara was for me.
-
2:52 - 2:56To be a light of hope and understanding,
-
2:56 - 2:58to share some sense of illumination
-
2:58 - 3:00that maybe sometimes reflects peoples lives,
-
3:00 - 3:04and sometimes opens them up to themselves
-
3:04 - 3:06is the greatest blessing God could have given me.
-
3:06 - 3:11And I want to continue to use television as we become more polarized in this medium
-
3:11 - 3:17I choose to use it in whatever way I can, we can, to make people
-
3:17 - 3:21lead better lives.
-
3:21 - 3:24To lead them to the highest vision possible for themselves
-
3:24 - 3:27That is the goal. I thank you for this award
-
3:27 - 3:31because it encourages me to run on and see what
-
3:31 - 3:34the end will be. Thank you!
