  • 0:05 - 0:08
    Oh, Oprah. Wondrous Oprah!
  • 0:09 - 0:12
There are the only possible words
  • 0:12 - 0:16
that could follow what you just saw that can follow Maya Angelo.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
Ladies and gentlemen, the Lifetime Achievement Award
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    to Oprah Whinfrey!
  • 0:23 - 0:34
    (Applause)
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    Well
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    Thank you. (breathes out)
  • 1:09 - 1:15
This is, ah, this is certainly one of life's full circle moments for me.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    Because it's so true
  • 1:20 - 1:23
We are all beacons of light for each other.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
And I'm grateful that Barbara Walters was there
  • 1:27 - 1:32
for me to see that beacon of light. To become all that I could be today.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
Thank you, Miss Barbara. Thank you.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
I want to thank the Harpo Family,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
And I want to thank the King World Family.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
I want to thank everybody who has nurtured me.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
Who stood in the gap for me.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    Stedman, you're the sweetness man.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
With the greatest integrity. Thank you for helping me to be
  • 1:54 - 1:58
everything that I am and all that is to come.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
Thank you, Gale. Thank you, Maya.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
Thank you, all. You know, when I...from the beginning,
  • 2:04 - 2:09
from the beginning, being a colored, then Negro, then black,
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    then African-American child
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    (laughter)
  • 2:14 - 2:17
Growing up in Mississippi, my prayer was,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
for as long as I can remember,
  • 2:20 - 2:24
"God, use me. Use me. Use this life. I don't know what the future
  • 2:24 - 2:28
holds for me. But I know that there is a vision for my life
  • 2:28 - 2:31
that is greater than my imagination can hold.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
Use me. Use me. What would you have me to do?"
  • 2:34 - 2:40
And that dream, that desire, that prayer, brought me somehow to television.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
and to be able to use this tremendous vehicle of television,
  • 2:44 - 2:48
to go into people's homes and somehow be able to touch their lives
  • 2:48 - 2:51
and to be the beacon that Barbara was for me.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
To be a light, a hope, an understanding.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
To share some sense of illumination that maybe sometimes reflects
  • 2:59 - 3:03
people's lives and sometimes opens them up to themselves,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
is the greatest blessing God could've given me.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
And I want to continue to use television as we become more polarized
  • 3:09 - 3:15
in this medium, I choose to use it in whatever way I can, we can,
  • 3:16 - 3:19
to make people lead better lives.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
To lead them to the highest vision possible for themselves.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    That is the goal.
  • 3:25 - 3:27
I thank you for this award.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    Because it encourages me
  • 3:29 - 3:31
to run on and see what the end will be.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    Thank you!
