This is Vättern

Swedens second biggest lake

It's deep and full of predators

Team Galant are ready to deal
with the giants of this lake

We're doing it with the trolling
legend himself, Rade

He knows every deep edge, school
and hunting areas in the lake

We're getting onboard on Scandinavias
probably biggest trolling boat

Our goal is Salmon, Arctic char
and sea trout

It's really hard to catch all 3 of
them in one single day

3 species and one gigantic boat

And some people who think they
know what they're doing

the lures are in the water
and the coffea is hot

what can possibly go wrong?

they are so beautiful and strong

I've got a great feeling about today

I've never caught a salmon in a lake before

My goal for the day is to catch
my first salmon in a lake

we've decided to head out

It's a great period for salmon so we
aim for that

we rig for salmon and have
arcitc char and sea trout as a bonus

this might be the biggest salmon
boat on Vättern

It's huge

The best time to catch all 3 species
is during winter

when the water is cold

Vättern is 130km long, 30 km wide

and the deepest spot is 128m

a lot of spots for the fish to hide

you need to have the lures in the water
and cover as much area as possible

Let's go now

We'll start with a wobbler on the surface

We just got out here and all of a sudden
Rade rigged all the rods

release it like 220 feet

I'll start at the other side

It's been great fishing from shore
lately

There's been some good reports
the winter has been mild

- How many rods do we have? 12?
- it's 10

we're gonna have 6 rods on the surface

and 4 rods going deeper
2 on each side

we have a counter on these trolling reels

so 220 feet is around 70 meters

Rade has got really good track record

we've caught fish every time we've
been on the water with him

But salmon, arctic char and trout is
hard to cath

we need to have the lures in the water
as quick as possible

we can show you later what
lures we're using

They are strong

The take was really good

so sick, we haven't even fished
for more than 5 minutes

arctic char is one of my favourite fish

they are so beautiful

they are more silver here in Vättern

if you fish them in arctic lakes
they are really red

a beautiful one but not the
most beautiful I've seen

a perfect fish to eat

they need to be minimum 50cm

let's measure this one later but
it's definiltey over 50cm

I've got the knife with me here

Important if you want the best meat

to drain them from all blood

I'll use the Morakniv

let's do it outside the boat

- we don't want to ruin Rades boat
- no we don't want blood everywhere

imagine my first salmon on a lake

I don't want to push it to hard

they can have soft mouth
you need to be careful

a pike, zander or perch you can
just reel them in

The salmon was close to 4kg

and after just 1 hour of fishing
we've caught 2/3 species

the last few year there have been
so many salmon in Vättern

back in the days there where
fewer salmon here

but higher average weight

the worlds biggest salmon caught in
a lake was 20,4kg

and was caught here in Vättern

from shore by Dennis Gustafsson 1997

In that time a salmon even close
to that haven't been caught

But on a good day you might catch
up to 10 salmon

we where not the only ones
fishing just this day

Vättern is the second biggest lake
in Sweden

a popular lake to fish

you can be out trolling like this

but also fish from land and cast

then you need long rods to
cast far out

I can see 10 people here behind us

It's fun when you can vary your fishing

you don't need a boat to fish for salmon

When you're out trolling at Vättern

we have different lures than we're used to

here we have some special lures

I've got 3 different types here

the first one is a spoon

pretty thin and moves a lot

then we have this type

looks like a bleak

try to look like a real fish

as you can see it's bent

It spins when you fish with it

and lure more fish

at last we have this one

It looks really special

it's plastic and weighs almost nothing

it's very irratic in the water

so 3 different lures with
3 different movements

and you can figure out what they
want just that day

during summer you can fish for arctic char
buy fishing them vertically

with often good result

arctic char is the one species
that is easisest to catch

so not a surprise that arctic char
was the first fish we caught

and after that salmon we just need
a sea trout

Sea trout is as you might know
a species that is hard to catch

a bite !

You can easily loose these salmons

You don't want to push them to hard

You can't fight them for to long either

we have 30 meters left

the arctic char in Vättern is one of the few
wild ones still left in Sweden

they are born naturally in Vättern

each fish caught is extra valuable

They like cold and clear water

and are often found on the deep
especially during summer

To protect them there are strict rules

You can only take home 2 chars/person

and the minimum lenght is 50cm

but even though we're happy about
catching arctic char, the clock is ticking

and to reach our goal we really
need to catch a sea trout very soon

You need a lot of gear to go out
trolling here at Vättern

the easiest way if you dan't have
this much gear

is to go out here with a fishing guide

Rade has got 10 different rods

we can have a look at the closest one

this is how it looks like

you need a line counter on it

to be able to know how much line
you have out there

and then a nylon line

the rod is quite short, only 7 feet
a inline rod

which mean that the line goes
inside the rod

so you get the best feeling reeling
in the fish

and less risk of tangle

It's a good idea to go out with a guide
so you learn a lot
