Cardi B & Nancy P Take On Trump While Unpaid Workers Crowdfund | The Daily Show

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    It is now day 27
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    of the longest shutdown
    in American history.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    Funding for low-income housing
    is in danger.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    School lunches
    are facing cutbacks.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
And things have gotten so bad
    that Air Force One
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    is now being operated
    by Spirit Airlines.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    (laughter)
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    Poor Melania. She always pays
    for Trump's sins.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Look at her.
She's like, "This is not best."
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    Anyway, as you know,
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    800,000 government employees
have not been paid, all right?
  • 0:27 - 0:30
The U.S. economy is at risk
    of sliding into recession,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    and now, even most concerning,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    the shutdown is even affecting
    the world of hip-hop.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    Native Bronxite Cardi B
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    now weighing in
    on the government shutdown.
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    Hey, y'all,
I just want to remind you
  • 0:41 - 0:44
because it's been a little bit
    over three weeks, okay?
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    It's been a little bit
    over three weeks.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    Trump is now ordering,
    as in summonsing,
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    federal government workers
    to go back to work
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    without getting paid.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    I know a lot of y'all don't care
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    because y'all don't work
    for the government
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    or y'all probably
    don't even have a job,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    but this shit
    is really (bleep) serious, bro.
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    I feel like we need
    to take some action.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    I don't know what type
    of action, bitch,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
because this is not what I do.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    But, bitch, I'm scared.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    That is the most
    amazing thing ever.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    (cheering and applause)
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    That is so dope.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
Like, how cool would it be
    if Cardi B
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    somehow ended the shutdown,
    right?
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    Like, we find out
that Trump is a major fan
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    because "Bodak Yellow"
    is his favorite song
  • 1:26 - 1:28
and also the color of his hair.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
Like, that would be so insane.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    And I will say this,
    if there's one woman
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    who Trump won't end
    the shutdown for,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    it's Nancy P.
  • 1:36 - 1:37
Because, a couple of days ago,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    she wrote a letter
    asking him to postpone
  • 1:39 - 1:41
his State of the Union address,
    right,
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    in light
    of the government shutdown.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    And after two days--
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    learning how to write,
    I assume--
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    the president wrote
    a letter back.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    President Trump, moments ago,
    cancelling
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's
    overseas trip
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    to Brussels, uh, Egypt,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    and the war zone
    that is Afghanistan
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    hours before the speaker
    and her congressional delegation
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    were set to leave,
    uh, saying, in part,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    "In light of the 800,000
    great American workers
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    "not receiving pay,
I am sure you would agree
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    "that postponing
    this public relations event
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    is totally appropriate."
    He goes on to write...
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    (reading):
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    -Ooh...
    -(booing)
  • 2:17 - 2:19
You can feel Trump said it
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    like it's the worst thing
    he could think of.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
"If you want to fly commercial,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    ah...!"
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    That's hardcore though, right?
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    Cancelling her flight
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    right before she's about
    to take off.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    That's like the complete
    opposite of a romantic comedy.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Like, I imagine Trump
    ran through the airport like,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    "Nancy! Nancy, wait!
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    "Nancy!
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    There's something
    I have to tell you."
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    And Pelosi was like,
    "Yes, Donald?"
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    He's like, "Nancy,
  • 2:44 - 2:47
get the (bleep) off the plane."
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    (applause)
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    Now...
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    (cheering and applause)
  • 2:52 - 2:55
Now, to be fair to Trump,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    Nancy Pelosi's letter
was a little bit snarky, right?
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    But it's crazy that Chump--
    Trump's GPS
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    never takes him
    onto the high road, right?
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    'Cause he's just like,
"Okay, Nancy, you want to play?
  • 3:05 - 3:09
    Well, you're messing
    with the queen bitch now."
  • 3:09 - 3:12
But, look, Cardi B is right.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    Something needs to be done,
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    because the government
is not doing its job right now,
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    and everyday citizens
    have decided to step up.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    REPORTER:
    As the shutdown drags on,
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    some are getting desperate.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    Hundreds of furloughed
    federal workers
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    turning to GoFundMe,
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    pleading for help
    to pay the bills.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    Some are dipping
    into their savings.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    They're relying on credit cards,
    even setting up GoFundMe pages.
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    REPORTER:
    The National Park Foundation
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    has launched a campaign
    to collect emergency funds.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    REPORTER 2: About 1,800
    campaigns are raising money
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    to help with rent, groceries,
    student loans and more.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    Yes, government workers
are being forced to use GoFundMe
  • 3:47 - 3:49
to try and make ends meet.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    For more on how people
    are coping with the shutdown,
  • 3:51 - 3:54
we turn to a man who gets
shut down at bars all the time.
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    Michael Kosta, everybody.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    (cheering and applause)
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    People are...
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    people are using crowdfunding
    to survive.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    Right? Some government workers
    are even raising money
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    to help take care
    of national parks.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
-What-what do you make of this?
    -Yeah.
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    Well, I-I think it's great,
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    especially about the parks.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
I leave a lot of trash there
    on the weekends.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    I didn't know
    that you go camping.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    I don't.
I just take my trash there.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    I mean, why?
    Where do you put yours,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    on the curb,
where a lawyer could find it?
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    (chuckling):
I mean, you crack me up.
  • 4:28 - 4:32
    I'm all for crowdfunding to
    help people during the shutdown,
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    because I love helping people.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    And more than that,
    I love playing God.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    You know, sure,
    Coast Guard, firefighter,
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    I'll throw you a hundo,
    but not you, TSA inspector.
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    Not until I get
    my prescription shampoo back.
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    I picked up
    something pretty nasty
  • 4:47 - 4:48
when I was throwing my garbage
    in the woods.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
You know what I'm talking about,
    right?
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    (laughter)
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    No. Um...
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    look, federal workers
    shouldn't have to depend
  • 4:56 - 4:58
-on charity to do their jobs.
    -Mm-hmm.
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    I-I don't think that's right.
    I mean, it's nice
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    that people are stepping up,
    but this isn't sustainable.
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    Well, it could be sustainable,
    Trevor.
  • 5:03 - 5:06
If everybody just donated to the
    services that they cared about,
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    then we wouldn't
    even need government.
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    (chuckles)
    Worried about national security?
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    Donate to the military.
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    You want to help kids?
  • 5:13 - 5:16
I don't, but give to education.
  • 5:16 - 5:20
    Want to support a handsome,
    high-quality entertainer?
  • 5:20 - 5:22
You can send me money on Venmo.
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    I'm MichaelKostaTheComedian-4.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    Dash-four?
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    So there's three other
    MichaelKostaTheComedians
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    -on Venmo?
    -No, they're all me.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    -I just keep forgetting
    my password. -Ah, I see.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    Okay, but-but, Michael,
    here's the thing,
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    -widespread charity can't fix
    government's issues, -Yeah.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    because you can't guarantee
    that you'll have enough money
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    -to pay for everything
    that you need. -Okay.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    So, what if some people
    don't want to contribute?
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    Well, don't get your dimples
    in a twist, T-bone, okay?
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    We'll make a rule.
    Everybody has to give
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    at least a little something
    based on their income.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
    Uh-huh. And-and so...
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    -so we require people
    to donate money. -Yeah.
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    But how do we know
it's going to the right places?
  • 6:01 - 6:03
Man, you sure do love questions,
    huh?
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    I'll t... I'll tell you what,
  • 6:05 - 6:06
we'll hire people to figure out
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    where all the donation money
    should go,
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    and then I don't have
    to think about it.
  • 6:09 - 6:13
    Any other issues,
    Trevor No-casio-Cortez?
  • 6:13 - 6:15
Yeah, I just... I just have one
more. I just have one more.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
    Okay, deciding where the money
    goes is a big responsibility...
  • 6:18 - 6:21
-Mm-hmm. -...so how do we decide
who'd be in charge of it all?
  • 6:21 - 6:24
It's easy. We-we ask the public
    who they want in charge,
  • 6:24 - 6:27
    and then whoever gets
the most picks gets the job.
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    And every few years,
    we ask again.
  • 6:29 - 6:33
    Michael, you-you realize
    you're describing a government.
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    Fine. If-if that's what
    you want to call it,
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    then let's try this government
    thing, and worst-case scenario,
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    if it doesn't work,
    we'll shut it down.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    There's where we...
    Michael Kosta, everyone.
