Jamal speaking Tachelhit | Berber language (Berbers) | Wikitongues

  • 0:25 - 0:29
My name is Jamal I was born in Morocco,
  • 0:31 - 0:35
I came to the US to further my education
  • 0:35 - 0:39
I came here when I was about 24.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
To be honest when I first came here I was so scared
  • 0:49 - 0:53
because back then I didn’t know anything about the US.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
Anyway I came for educational purposes, I got married here, I met my wife here, started my career
  • 1:01 - 1:05
and now every summer I go to Morocco
  • 1:06 - 1:10
I have sisters that live in Austria
  • 1:13 - 1:16
They are married there and live there
  • 1:19 - 1:23
I am currently in a city called pensacola in florida,
  • 1:23 - 1:27
the beach is not that far.
  • 1:29 - 1:38
This town is small and beautiful and good for those who want to raise a family, those who don’t like crowded places and places with a tons of traffic
  • 1:40 - 1:53
A lot of people know about the existence Berbers, or Amazigh,We call, them Amazigh in our language. Berbers exist a lot in Morocco, we have Chelouh people, Rifi people,
  • 1:55 - 2:00
they also exist in Algeria, Tunisia and even Libya,
  • 2:04 - 2:08
you find them mostly in Morocco
  • 2:10 - 2:14
you find them mostly in Morocco
  • 2:15 - 2:19
Some of them only speak Berber.
  • 2:20 - 2:26
Many people when they hear about Morocco they think it is an Arab country,
  • 2:27 - 2:33
but those who speak Berber outnumber those who speak Arabic
  • 2:34 - 2:45
Morocco doesn’t really have Arabs but rather Berbers who became Arabized and forgot their identity , those who basically forgot their history after the coming of Islam
  • 2:48 - 2:56
Many of those Berbers, forgot the Berber language and started using Moroccan Derija
  • 2:57 - 3:06
but the number of Berbers is very large, the number of those who speak Tachelhit is estimated to be more than 10 millions in Morocco
  • 3:07 - 3:11
but they now have a big issue which the arabization of Morocco
  • 3:17 - 3:27
the government doesn’t do much for Berbers because it only encourages arabic but Berbers
  • 3:29 - 3:33
and their language is not very well taken care of
  • 3:34 - 3:40
When I have kids I will teach them Berber in order to speak it because it is who we are, it is our identity ,
  • 3:40 - 3:48
it is not only a language, it is our origins, our culture, our traditions
  • 3:52 - 3:57
It is who we are, If you don't speak Berber anymore, then you have nothing left
  • 4:00 - 4:10
Many people tell me that Berber sounds like German or polish or even Russian to them sometimes
  • 4:12 - 4:18
the RIFI Berber is a bit different from Tachelhit though
