Mentalism, mind reading and the art of getting inside your head

  • Not Synced
    We are all trapped
  • Not Synced
    inside our own heads,
  • Not Synced
and our beliefs and our understandings
    about the world are limited
  • Not Synced
    by that perspective,
  • Not Synced
which means we tell ourselves stories.
  • Not Synced
    Right? So here we are
    in this infinite data source.
  • Not Synced
There's an infinite number of things
    that we could think about,
  • Not Synced
    but we edit and delete.
  • Not Synced
We choose what to think about,
    what to pay attention to.
  • Not Synced
    We make up a story
  • Not Synced
to make sense of what's going on,
  • Not Synced
and we all get it wrong,
  • Not Synced
because we're all trying to navigate
    with our own skewed compasses,
  • Not Synced
and we all have our own baggage,
    but the stories themselves
  • Not Synced
    are utterly convincing.
  • Not Synced
    And we all do this,
  • Not Synced
and a lot of the stories that
we live by aren't even our own.
  • Not Synced
    The first ones we inherit
at a young age from our parents,
  • Not Synced
    who of course have
    their own skewed beliefs,
  • Not Synced
    their own frustrations,
  • Not Synced
    their own unlived lives.
  • Not Synced
    And for better or worse,
    we take all that onboard
  • Not Synced
and then we go out into the world
  • Not Synced
    thinking maybe we have to
    be successful to be loved,
  • Not Synced
or that we always have to put
    other people's needs first,
  • Not Synced
or that we have some big terrible secret
    we couldn't possible tell people.
  • Not Synced
And it's just fiction, it's just stories,
  • Not Synced
and we'd worry a lot less about
what other people think of us
  • Not Synced
if we realized how seldom they do.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
So I feel that magic is a great analogy
for how we edit reality and form a story
  • Not Synced
and then mistake that story for the truth,
  • Not Synced
and I've had a 20-year career in the UK
  • Not Synced
    staging big psychological
    experiments on TV,
  • Not Synced
    and now that's on Netflix.
  • Not Synced
I also have a stage show.
  • Not Synced
I've got my first Broadway show actually
    coming up called "Secret."
  • Not Synced
Just throwing that out there. No pressure.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    That should be this year.
  • Not Synced
And I try to do something new
    with mentalism, mentalism,
  • Not Synced
    which is the dubious art
  • Not Synced
    of getting inside your head.
  • Not Synced
    So there was a heyday
for this kind of stage mind-reading,
  • Not Synced
    which was the 1930s.
  • Not Synced
That's why I'm dressed like this,
  • Not Synced
    in my most un-TED-like garb.
  • Not Synced
And there was an act, an act
    known as The Oracle Act,
  • Not Synced
    and in The Oracle Act,
    members of the audience,
  • Not Synced
as I know you have done,
    would write down secret questions,
  • Not Synced
    the sort of questions
    you might ask a psychic,
  • Not Synced
seal that question into an envelope,
  • Not Synced
and out on the outside of the envelope
    they would write their initials
  • Not Synced
and then roughly where they sat
    in the audience.
  • Not Synced
And then the Oracle, the mind-reader,
would take an envelope one at a time,
  • Not Synced
    he wouldn't open it,
  • Not Synced
but he would attempt to divine
  • Not Synced
    what question was sealed inside,
  • Not Synced
and if he got that right,
he would try and answer the question
  • Not Synced
    for the person too.
  • Not Synced
And the act spread like wildfire.
  • Not Synced
    It's a testament, I think,
    to the seductive appeal
  • Not Synced
    of some powerful figure
    offering you easy, simple answers
  • Not Synced
to life's complex and subtle questions
  • Not Synced
    and anxieties.
  • Not Synced
So thank you all of you
    that wrote questions.
  • Not Synced
    I haven't seen these.
    I know somebody's guarding them.
  • Not Synced
    Someone's collected them up.
Thank you so much. Thank you sir.
  • Not Synced
    I will take those now.
Thank you all of you that did this.
  • Not Synced
    I should say, probably,
a couple of things before I start.
  • Not Synced
    In absolute honesty,
  • Not Synced
first of all I can't see
    through these envelopes.
  • Not Synced
    They are sealed. They are
    thick black envelopes.
  • Not Synced
You'll know if you wrote one.
    I can't see through them.
  • Not Synced
    Secondly, importantly,
I don't know any of you
  • Not Synced
    and nobody is playing along.
    That's not what this is.
  • Not Synced
Thirdly, I don't believe for a second that
I have any special psychological gifts,
  • Not Synced
    let alone any psychic ones.
  • Not Synced
    So let's begin.
  • Not Synced
    Nope.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    OK, this, ooh, nice.
  • Not Synced
    OK, this one's interesting.
    There's a couple here.
  • Not Synced
I will start with maybe this one.
    This one's interesting,
  • Not Synced
    because the writing undulates.
  • Not Synced
There's a sort of an up and down thing,
  • Not Synced
which normally, not always, normally means
  • Not Synced
    that the person doesn't know
the answer to the question themselves,
  • Not Synced
    so it's normally a question
    about the future, right?
  • Not Synced
    That sort of suggests uncertainty.
  • Not Synced
    So I would say it's a lady,
  • Not Synced
    age-wise it's a little difficult to tell
    from this minimal handwriting,
  • Not Synced
but I would expect maybe 30s,
maybe 40s, but let's find out.
  • Not Synced
And a question about the future,
  • Not Synced
    it says, "JN Center."
  • Not Synced
So it's going to be somebody
in this big central section here.
  • Not Synced
If you think this is you,
    if you wrote one,
  • Not Synced
    could you make a fuss?
  • Not Synced
It's a bit difficult for me
    to see in the center.
  • Not Synced
Hi, give us a way. So J,
  • Not Synced
    Jane? Jessica?
  • Not Synced
    Jessica: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    Derren Brown: Which one?
    Jessica: Jessica.
  • Not Synced
DB: Thank you. Just a guess.
Little murmur of approval, thank you?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I'll take it.
  • Not Synced
    All right, so Jessica,
    I won't ask your age,
  • Not Synced
but is it a question essentially
    about the future?
  • Not Synced
    Jessica: Mhm?
    DB: Yes?
  • Not Synced
    Jessica: Yes.
    DB: Yes. OK.
  • Not Synced
All right. So what did we ask?
What did Jessica ask about the future?
  • Not Synced
So am OK with late-30s, early-40s?
  • Not Synced
Jessica: I'll take it. I'm taking it.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    DB: OK, so it's important,
  • Not Synced
    because we ask different questions
    depending how old we are.
  • Not Synced
I think with you this is going to be,
just say, "I'll take it" again.
  • Not Synced
    Just say those words?
    Jessica: I'll take it.
  • Not Synced
    DB: Virginia? You're from Virginia?
    Jessica: Yes I am.
  • Not Synced
DB: So I think this is a lady,
I think this is a lady who wants
  • Not Synced
    to leave Virginia.
  • Not Synced
I think you're looking at plans,
    it's whether or not things
  • Not Synced
are going to come together to get out.
  • Not Synced
    Just show me your hands.
  • Not Synced
Other sides so I can see fingernails?
  • Not Synced
OK, I think you have a farm and it's
    whether or not you're going
  • Not Synced
to sell your farm and get out of Virginia?
  • Not Synced
    Is this right?
  • Not Synced
    Jessica: Absolutely, that's the question.
  • Not Synced
DB: All right. Great. Thank you.
    It's a great question!
  • Not Synced
    What was the actual question?
    What did you put?
  • Not Synced
Jessica: Will I sell the farm in Virginia?
  • Not Synced
DB: Will you sell the farm?
  • Not Synced
All right, so look, it's a great question
if you are pretending to be a psychic,
  • Not Synced
    because it's about the future,
which means I can give you
  • Not Synced
a yes or no on this.
  • Not Synced
    It means nothing.
You have no way of verifying it.
  • Not Synced
And a dangerous thing to do,
and if I say yes or no,
  • Not Synced
it'll just stick in the back of your mind
  • Not Synced
and it can't not start to affect
    decisions you make,
  • Not Synced
so a dangerous thing to do.
  • Not Synced
    However,
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter),
  • Not Synced
yes I think you will sell the farm,
  • Not Synced
because I think you're the sort of person
  • Not Synced
    that in the nicest way
    will get what you want,
  • Not Synced
I think there are things you want,
you tend to focus on them
  • Not Synced
at the expense of other things
    that you know you probably
  • Not Synced
    should be focusing on more,
    would you agree?
  • Not Synced
Educated, you spent a few years in --
  • Not Synced
say yes again, the word yes quickly?
    Jessica: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    DB: No?
    Jessica: No.
  • Not Synced
    DB: California? Berkeley?
A bit of a guess, but...
  • Not Synced
Jessica: I went to Berkeley, yes I did.
  • Not Synced
DB: So it's a yes. Oh, and you've
been to India recently as well.
  • Not Synced
There's just a tiny, tiny little thing
    going on there. Yes? No?
  • Not Synced
Jessica: Yes, I just got back from India.
  • Not Synced
DB: It's a yes from me, I just don't want
to say it like it's written in the stars
  • Not Synced
because it isn't and you need
    to take responsibility for it.
  • Not Synced
Would you accept that as an answer
    to your question, though, yes?
  • Not Synced
    Jessica: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    DB: Fantastic. Have a seat.
Thank you. Let's do another one.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
AH, also in the center? AH.
  • Not Synced
This will be a man, a little older,
maybe late-40s, I would say from this.
  • Not Synced
AH, center, stand up for me
if you think this is you?
  • Not Synced
AH. Hi, let's get a microphone to the sky.
  • Not Synced
    Quick as we can,
    on camera would be amazing.
  • Not Synced
    Oh, look at that! Freeze.
    Don't move. Don't move.
  • Not Synced
    Keep absolutely still.
  • Not Synced
Are you standing, or are you?
  • Not Synced
Man: I am standing. I'm not that short.
  • Not Synced
DB: All right, now you changed that,
there was just something you did
  • Not Synced
    as you got up.
  • Not Synced
Yes or no, have you put something on here,
  • Not Synced
    you're not doing it now,
but you did it as you stood up,
  • Not Synced
to do with your left or your left leg
or your left foot, yes or no?
  • Not Synced
    Just yes or no.
  • Not Synced
    Man: Yes. All right.
  • Not Synced
He was giving us a nice
clear signal as he stood up.
  • Not Synced
All right, I'll try and be quick on this.
  • Not Synced
Put your weight on your lefthand side
    and say "yes" for me.
  • Not Synced
    Man: Yes.
  • Not Synced
DB: Take your hand out of that pocket
and put your weight on the other side,
  • Not Synced
    change hands with the mic
    and say yes again.
  • Not Synced
    Man: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    DB: You have a dislocation
in the big toe on your lefthand side?
  • Not Synced
    Man: Yes.
  • Not Synced
DB: Thank you so much. Great.
Good one! Take a seat. Take a seat.
  • Not Synced
All right, can I get the microphone?
I'm going to change microphone for this.
  • Not Synced
Can I grab a mic up? Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you so much.
    That would be great there.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to change mic because,
  • Not Synced
hopefully you can now still hear me?
  • Not Synced
So I'm going to blindfold myself,
  • Not Synced
and I'm doing this now so I don't
have the clues as you stand up.
  • Not Synced
I can't see where you put your hands.
  • Not Synced
I can't see how you respond
    to what I'm saying.
  • Not Synced
I can't see what the people
next to you are doing either.
  • Not Synced
If they know the answers to the question,
    that's always very helpful.
  • Not Synced
    I won't have those advantages,
  • Not Synced
    but strangely,
  • Not Synced
    this frees me up,
  • Not Synced
and I want this to free you up as well,
so if you didn't write a question
  • Not Synced
but you wish that you had done,
    you can still take part.
  • Not Synced
The point of writing the question
is only that it just kind of gets
  • Not Synced
    a nice, clear, succinct
    wording in your head.
  • Not Synced
So if you can do that anyway, if you
can just find a question in your head,
  • Not Synced
    make it clear and succinct,
    just send it to me
  • Not Synced
and I'll try and do this now
    without anything written down.
  • Not Synced
So just start to form questions
but send me your name as well.
  • Not Synced
    That's important.
  • Not Synced
My name is, whatever that last guy was,
  • Not Synced
and what's strange about me feet,
    or whatever the question was.
  • Not Synced
    So name and question.
  • Not Synced
There is somebody already, I'm guessing
    you're quite near the front,
  • Not Synced
because your name is quite clear.
  • Not Synced
    Feels like you're
in the center at the front.
  • Not Synced
    OK, just, Allan?
  • Not Synced
    Feels like there's an Allan.
  • Not Synced
And you're going to be quite near
the front, vaguely central, I think.
  • Not Synced
Feels like it's coming from right there.
  • Not Synced
    There's like a man, maybe early 60s,
    something like that.
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Yes.
  • Not Synced
DB: Yes. Oh, you've got a mic?
Great, thank you. He's got a mic.
  • Not Synced
Allan, just say "stop" when I get to you
so that I know where you are,
  • Not Synced
    where to face.
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Stop.
  • Not Synced
    DB: You a Capricorn?
    Allan: Yes.
  • Not Synced
DB: So Allan has something in his head.
  • Not Synced
    Now did you hear it,
hear the reserve in his voice?
  • Not Synced
It's going to be something really tricky.
  • Not Synced
    I think with you,
just say "yes" again for me?
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Yes.
  • Not Synced
DB: It's going to be either, no it's not,
  • Not Synced
    it's access, it's a password
    or access to something.
  • Not Synced
Have you got something, just yes or no,
with a password in your head?
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    DB: Like a computer password,
    that sort of thing?
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    DB: Excellent!
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    In that case, I'm going
    to finish on this one.
  • Not Synced
    If I get this right,
  • Not Synced
they're all going to know what it is,
    and millions of people potentially.
  • Not Synced
You will change it, won't you?
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Of course.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
DB: Just say "of course" again?
  • Not Synced
DB: All right. If it's a word,
    I imagine it's a word, right,
  • Not Synced
    just see the password
    written in front of you,
  • Not Synced
    big clear block capital letters,
  • Not Synced
and as you look at it, think for me
of a letter somewhere in the middle,
  • Not Synced
    don't say it out loud,
  • Not Synced
just get a letter in your head
    that's somewhere in the middle.
  • Not Synced
    Have you got one?
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Yeah.
DB: OK, stick with that for me.
  • Not Synced
    Ah, you changed it, OK.
  • Not Synced
    You changed your mind, there.
  • Not Synced
    I think you settled on,
    I think that's a B, yes?
  • Not Synced
    Allan: No, I didn't.
  • Not Synced
    DB: Then it's an I?
    Allan: Correct.
  • Not Synced
DB: Yeah, but you had a B, yes?
    Allan: Yes.
  • Not Synced
DB: Yeah, he changed his mind.
    He changed his mind.
  • Not Synced
    So see it written there.
  • Not Synced
    Just keep saying it
    to yourself in your head.
  • Not Synced
Oh, you play drums, don't you.
  • Not Synced
    Allan: I do.
  • Not Synced
DB: Yeah, just get that out of your head,
get that out of your head,
  • Not Synced
just focus on this one thing for me.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
My job is to sell you a story, right?
  • Not Synced
And I try and do this to all of you,
to get you to pay attention
  • Not Synced
to one thing that I want you
    to find important, ignore,
  • Not Synced
other things that I want you to ignore,
and then join up those narrative dots
  • Not Synced
to tell yourself a certain story
    about what I'm doing,
  • Not Synced
    and this only works because
    we are story-forming creatures,
  • Not Synced
which means we do this every day.
  • Not Synced
We go out into this complex
    and subtle world
  • Not Synced
full of a complex and subtle people
    like you and me, Allan,
  • Not Synced
    and we reduce them
    to these neat characters
  • Not Synced
    that fit whatever story
    we're telling ourselves,
  • Not Synced
    and we say she's insecure,
he's arrogant, they can't be trusted,
  • Not Synced
    and these are just stories
like the story that I can somehow
  • Not Synced
    read your mind.
  • Not Synced
You're thinking of selling your company
as well, aren't you, at the moment.
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Correct.
  • Not Synced
DB: Which is something to do with skin?
    Allan: Yes.
  • Not Synced
DB: Skin care or something like this.
    Allan: Uh, yes.
  • Not Synced
DB: And I think the reason
    why I love doing this
  • Not Synced
is that it reminds me at least to try
and be more alive and alert
  • Not Synced
    to the complexity and
    the subtlety of what's real,
  • Not Synced
    that there's always other stuff
going on that we don't know about,
  • Not Synced
and it means we can get less stuck,
  • Not Synced
we can be kinder to people
  • Not Synced
    because we can recognize
there's always fear behind their stress,
  • Not Synced
    so we don't need
    to meet it as defensively,
  • Not Synced
and we can start to see the stories
    for what they are
  • Not Synced
    and recognize that life
    isn't all about us.
  • Not Synced
    Oh!
  • Not Synced
    Your password, where are you?
Where are you? Where is he?
  • Not Synced
    Allan: Right here.
  • Not Synced
    DB: Stand up for me.
    Your password is "ariboy."
  • Not Synced
    A-r-i-b-o-y? Is that right?
    Allan: That's correct.
  • Not Synced
DB: Then thank you so much.
    Thank you very much indeed.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
