How a 13-year-old changed "Impossible" to "I'm Possible" | Sparsh Shah | TEDxGateway

-
0:32 - 0:34Antitransubstantiationalist.
-
0:34 - 0:35Disproportionableness.
-
0:35 - 0:37Incomprehensibilities.
-
0:38 - 0:40So, what you just heard
-
0:40 - 0:45were some of the eleven longest words
in the English dictionary. -
0:45 - 0:47Such complex words, right?
-
0:48 - 0:53Well, just as these words are complex,
so has my own life been. -
0:53 - 0:56And although seemingly difficult things,
-
0:56 - 1:01such as memorizing long and complex words
and numbers, are simple for me, -
1:01 - 1:03seemingly simple things,
-
1:03 - 1:07such as standing and bearing weight,
are impossible for me. -
1:08 - 1:11That's because I wasn't like
any other newborn baby. -
1:12 - 1:16I was born with osteogenesis imperfecta,
-
1:16 - 1:19a rare, incurable genetic disorder
-
1:19 - 1:22that causes a person's bones
to be extremely fragile. -
1:23 - 1:26So I guess you can call me Mr. Glass now.
-
1:26 - 1:27(Laughter)
-
1:27 - 1:31During my birth I had over 35 fractures
-
1:31 - 1:34and was taken immediately
to the intensive care unit. -
1:34 - 1:37(Beeping)
-
1:37 - 1:41These were the sounds that used
to resonate throughout the hospital, -
1:41 - 1:44because I was desperately
clinging on to my life. -
1:45 - 1:48The doctors gave me
the very bleak prognosis -
1:48 - 1:50that I'd only live for a day or two.
-
1:50 - 1:52But due to God's grace
-
1:52 - 1:57and the support of my parents
and their "never-say-die" attitude, -
1:57 - 1:59I survived.
-
1:59 - 2:00In fact -
-
2:00 - 2:03(Applause) Thank you.
-
2:06 - 2:11In fact, I've had 130 fractures so far
-
2:11 - 2:13in just the first 13 years of my life,
-
2:13 - 2:16and only God knows
how many more will happen. -
2:16 - 2:20I've also had multiple screws
and rods placed in my body, -
2:20 - 2:24so I guess you can call me
Iron Man as well. -
2:24 - 2:27Ironic, am I right?
-
2:27 - 2:30(Applause)
-
2:30 - 2:33But anyways, no more sob stories,
-
2:33 - 2:37because that's not what I want
to talk to you about today. -
2:37 - 2:39Now what do you see
in the slide in the back? -
2:39 - 2:41Can you tell me?
-
2:41 - 2:42[IMPOSSIBLE]
-
2:42 - 2:44Impossible, right.
-
2:44 - 2:46OK. Good.
-
2:46 - 2:48Now, what do you all see?
-
2:48 - 2:49[I'M POSSIBLE]
-
2:49 - 2:51(Laughter)
-
2:51 - 2:53Thank you.
-
2:54 - 2:55Awesome.
-
2:55 - 2:58That's exactly what I want
to share with you all today: -
2:58 - 3:04how I turned the word "impossible"
into "I'm possible" in my life -
3:04 - 3:07by following four simple steps.
-
3:07 - 3:11Step one: Find your passion.
-
3:12 - 3:13Despite the fact
-
3:13 - 3:17that I did live a very rough life
for the first few years, -
3:17 - 3:19God opened a new door to it
-
3:19 - 3:23that would become my passion
and change my life forever. -
3:23 - 3:25And that was music.
-
3:26 - 3:32Music has had a tremendous impact on me,
both physically and emotionally. -
3:32 - 3:35I started singing
ever since I could speak. -
3:35 - 3:39In fact, I even used to correct my parents
when they were singing off-key by saying, -
3:39 - 3:44"Mom, dad. You're not singing right."
-
3:44 - 3:46At the tender age of six,
-
3:46 - 3:50my parents enrolled me
into Indian classical vocal training. -
3:50 - 3:52Much later on,
-
3:52 - 3:55I also started taking
American vocal lessons, -
3:55 - 3:58therefore helping to increase
my versatility as a singer. -
3:59 - 4:03But I found my true calling
as an artist at the age of ten -
4:03 - 4:06when I wrote my first song:
"This love will never fade." -
4:07 - 4:11Since then, I've written 11 more songs.
-
4:13 - 4:17Two: Never hold yourself back.
-
4:18 - 4:19One day,
-
4:19 - 4:22I came across an amazing rap song
many of you may have heard of: -
4:22 - 4:24"Not Afraid,"
-
4:24 - 4:28by none other than Eminem,
also known as Slim Shady. -
4:29 - 4:33This song struck my chords
and was so inspirational to me -
4:33 - 4:35that I could not hold myself back.
-
4:35 - 4:40And I decided that I had to go out there
and make a cover of it myself. -
4:40 - 4:44(Chuckles) Who knew that the boy
with slim chances of survival -
4:44 - 4:47would go on to sing
Slim Shady songs one day. -
4:48 - 4:50But wait, there's more.
-
4:50 - 4:54I didn't just rap the song
like any other person. -
4:54 - 4:57First of all, I'm not a fan of profanity,
-
4:57 - 5:02so I decided to make
my rapper name: Purhythm. -
5:02 - 5:03In other words,
-
5:03 - 5:08I'm clean, no curses,
but I'm still all about the rhythm! -
5:08 - 5:10(Applause)
-
5:10 - 5:12(Giggling) Thank you.
-
5:13 - 5:18I also added my own touch
of Indian classical music to the song -
5:18 - 5:21which is part of a new music genre
that I want to pioneer -
5:21 - 5:23called ragarap,
-
5:23 - 5:26or the fusion
of seemingly polar opposites: -
5:26 - 5:30Indian classical music and hip-hop.
-
5:30 - 5:34I know right now to some of you
the idea may sound completely crazy, -
5:34 - 5:39but trust me, in the end
the result is beautiful. -
5:40 - 5:44To my pleasant surprise, the cover blew
up all over the Internet -
5:44 - 5:47and it became a worldwide phenomenon.
-
5:48 - 5:49I received praises
-
5:49 - 5:52from some of the most famous
celebrities out there, -
5:52 - 5:58and today the cover has gotten
over 55 million views, and counting, -
5:58 - 6:00on all social media sites so far.
-
6:00 - 6:02(Applause)
-
6:02 - 6:04Thank you.
-
6:05 - 6:09And because I decided
that I would not hold myself back -
6:09 - 6:11and instead decide to go out
-
6:11 - 6:13and display my musical talent
to the world, -
6:13 - 6:18I was able to achieve these among
many other achievements -
6:18 - 6:22that I've been very blessed
to have achieved to this day. -
6:25 - 6:29Step three: Help others.
-
6:30 - 6:35Now I've been singing pro bono
for various nonprofit organizations, -
6:35 - 6:40and by now I've helped to raise at least
half a million dollars for them. -
6:40 - 6:42(Applause)
-
6:42 - 6:43Thank you.
-
6:44 - 6:46Yes, that is American dollars by the way.
-
6:46 - 6:48(Laughter)
-
6:48 - 6:50Because I know
we're in India right now, so... -
6:51 - 6:52But I believe
-
6:52 - 6:55that the biggest satisfaction
for all of us -
6:55 - 6:59is when we get to help change
someone else's life for the better. -
6:59 - 7:03Doesn't it give us
such an immense amount of gratitude? -
7:04 - 7:05For example,
-
7:05 - 7:07I was once contacted by a family
-
7:07 - 7:10who had a child
with brittle bones just like me. -
7:10 - 7:14He was about to go into surgery,
and was very nervous. -
7:14 - 7:17But his parents reached out to me,
-
7:17 - 7:21and we had a FaceTime call
which went very well. -
7:21 - 7:22On the day of the surgery,
-
7:22 - 7:26his parents sent us this pic
with a smiling Xavier -
7:26 - 7:29going into the surgery without any fear.
-
7:29 - 7:31(Applause)
-
7:32 - 7:34Thank you.
-
7:36 - 7:39Last but not least: Dream big.
-
7:39 - 7:44None of this would have ever happened
if I had not dreamed big. -
7:44 - 7:46But my ultimate goal as a musician
-
7:46 - 7:50is still to one day perform
in front of a billion. -
7:50 - 7:54Yes, you heard me right -
a billion people one day. -
7:54 - 7:59I want to leave my footprints -
or rather track prints - -
7:59 - 8:04into the sand of legacies so deep
not even a tsunami can erase it. -
8:04 - 8:05And I firmly believe
-
8:05 - 8:09that every one of us here
should strive for such big goals. -
8:09 - 8:12I mean, don't you all want
to be remembered -
8:12 - 8:14when you leave this earth?
-
8:15 - 8:19I also have many plans
for my life in the future, -
8:19 - 8:22especially in my musical career.
-
8:22 - 8:25I want to join an online
bachelor's degree course in music -
8:25 - 8:27at the age of 13,
-
8:27 - 8:31come up with many original albums,
win a Grammy Award one day, -
8:31 - 8:33and most importantly,
-
8:33 - 8:36"sparsh" everyone's hearts
all over the world. -
8:36 - 8:39(Cheers and Applause)
-
8:39 - 8:41Thank you.
-
8:48 - 8:49Oh, thank you.
-
8:49 - 8:52But remember... it's still not over yet.
-
8:52 - 8:53(Laughter)
-
8:53 - 8:55I promise you.
-
8:57 - 9:01Yeah. So, where was I?
"Sparshing" everyone's hearts, right? -
9:02 - 9:06I want to spread the message
that no matter what happens in your life, -
9:06 - 9:10you should never ever
give up on your passion. -
9:10 - 9:14Everyone in this world
goes through struggles of some sort, -
9:14 - 9:15and I know,
-
9:15 - 9:20because I for one have to deal
with constant fractures and lots of pain. -
9:20 - 9:22But I believe
-
9:22 - 9:26that if I can turn "impossible"
into "I'm possible" in my life, -
9:26 - 9:29you can too.
-
9:29 - 9:32If you can believe it, you can achieve it.
-
9:32 - 9:36And I firmly believe
that if you push forward and have faith -
9:36 - 9:40you will make it big anywhere in life.
-
9:40 - 9:41Thank you so much.
-
9:41 - 9:44(Applause)
-
9:45 - 9:49But wait up, before you guys
do a standing ovation, -
9:49 - 9:51it's not over yet,
-
9:51 - 9:52(Applause and Laughter)
-
9:52 - 9:58because I'd like to leave you all
with a very special gift from me to you. -
9:59 - 10:04This is my rendition of ragarap
in Eminem's "Not Afraid" - Purhythm style. -
10:04 - 10:05(Cheers and Applause)
-
10:05 - 10:07So, thank you again.
-
10:09 - 10:12(Music)
-
10:12 - 10:18(Indian classical singing)
-
10:43 - 10:49(Singing) I'm not afraid to take a stand
-
10:50 - 10:56Everybody, come take my hand
-
10:56 - 11:00Walk this road together, through the storm
-
11:00 - 11:03Whatever weather, cold or warm
-
11:03 - 11:06Just letting you know
that you're not alone -
11:06 - 11:12Holler if you feel like
you've been down the same road -
11:12 - 11:15(Rhythmic clapping)
-
11:15 - 11:17(Rapping) Yeah!
-
11:17 - 11:19It's been a ride
-
11:20 - 11:25I guess I had to go to that place
to get to this one -
11:25 - 11:29Now some of you
might still be in that place -
11:29 - 11:32If you're trying to get out,
just follow me -
11:32 - 11:35I'll get you there, I promise
-
11:35 - 11:38You can try and read my lyrics
off of this paper before I lay 'em -
11:38 - 11:40You won't take the sting
out these words before I say 'em -
11:40 - 11:43'Cause ain't no way I'm a let you stop me
from causin' mayhem -
11:43 - 11:45When I say I'm a do something I do it
-
11:45 - 11:47I don't give a damn what you think
-
11:47 - 11:48I'm doin' this for me
-
11:48 - 11:49Forget the world, feed it beans
-
11:49 - 11:51It's gassed up if it thinks
it's stoppin' me -
11:51 - 11:55I'm a be what I set out to be,
without a doubt undoubtedly -
11:55 - 11:57all those who look down on me
I'm tearin' down your balcony! -
11:57 - 12:00No if, ands or buts, don't try
to ask him why or how can he -
12:00 - 12:02From "Infinite" down
to the last "Relapse" album -
12:02 - 12:06He's still frettin',
whether he's on salary paid hourly -
12:06 - 12:08Until he bows down
or he freaks his bowels out of him -
12:08 - 12:11Whichever comes first for better or worse
-
12:11 - 12:13He's married to the game
like a present for Christmas -
12:13 - 12:15but his gift is a curse, forget the Earth
-
12:15 - 12:17He's got the urge
to pull himself from the dirt -
12:17 - 12:19and curse the whole universe!
-
12:19 - 12:24(Singing) I'm not afraid to take a stand
-
12:24 - 12:29Everybody, come take my hand
-
12:29 - 12:33We'll walk this road together
through the storm -
12:33 - 12:36Whatever weather, cold or warm
-
12:36 - 12:38Just letting you know
that you're not alone -
12:38 - 12:42(Talking) For all you hip-hop fans.
If you know the lyrics, sing along. -
12:42 - 12:43Ready?
-
12:43 - 12:47(Singing) 'Cause I just
can't keep living this way -
12:47 - 12:52So starting today
I'm breaking out of this cage -
12:52 - 12:55I'm standing up, I'm a face my demons
-
12:55 - 12:58I'm manning up, I'm a hold my ground
-
12:58 - 13:01I've had enough, now I'm so fed up
-
13:01 - 13:04Time to put my life
back together right now -
13:04 - 13:06(Rapping) It was my decision to get clean
-
13:06 - 13:10I did it for me admittedly,
I probably did it subliminally for you -
13:10 - 13:13So I could come back a brand new me
you helped see me through -
13:13 - 13:15And don't even realize what you did,
believe me, you! -
13:15 - 13:17I've been through the wringer
-
13:17 - 13:19But they could do little
to the peace fingers -
13:19 - 13:22I think I got a tear in my eye,
I feel like the king of my world -
13:22 - 13:25Haters can make like bees
with no stingers and drop dead -
13:25 - 13:27No more beef flingers,
no more drama from now -
13:27 - 13:29Wanna promise to focus solely
-
13:29 - 13:32On handlin'
my responsibilities as a brother -
13:32 - 13:36so I solemnly swear to always treat
this roof like my brother and raise it -
13:36 - 13:38You couldn't lift a single shingle on it!
-
13:38 - 13:39'Cause the way I feel
-
13:39 - 13:41I'm strong enough to go to the gym
or the fitness club -
13:41 - 13:44And go lift a 100-pounder up,
'cause I'm raising the bar -
13:44 - 13:47I'd shoot for the moon
but too busy gazing at stars -
13:47 - 13:48I feel amazing
-
13:48 - 13:54(Singing) I'm not afraid
-
13:54 - 13:56Yeah!
-
13:59 - 14:02Walk this road together, through the storm
-
14:02 - 14:05Whatever weather, cold or warm
-
14:05 - 14:08Just lettin' you know
that you're not alone -
14:08 - 14:11Holler if you feel like
you've been down the same road -
14:11 - 14:13(Music ends)
-
14:13 - 14:14Purhythm!
-
14:14 - 14:17(Cheers and Applause)
-
14:17 - 14:19Thank you so much.
-
14:20 - 14:22Thank you.

Maricene Crus
In 13:15:
I’ve been through the ringer => I’ve been through the wringer
https://genius.com/Eminem-not-afraid-lyrics
Thank you!
Theresa Ranft
Thanks for noticing that, Maricene. I've fixed it.
Maricene Crus
Thank you for the correction, Theresa. ;)
By the way... I think that at 12:19 he repeats the sentence "I'm not afraid to take a stand", not "I'm not afraid to take a chance".
I am not sure, though, because I actually heard "I'm not afraid to take a stance".
In any case, maybe it would be safer to keep both sentences (at 10:43 and 12:19) the same:
I'm not afraid to take a stand.
What do you think?
Thanks again! ;)
Maricene Crus
Sorry, Theresa... another one:
13:45 - I don't give a glance what you think => I don't give a damn what you think...
Thank you
Theresa Ranft
Thanks Maricene! At 12:19 I definitely hear him say "chance" or "stance", but I put "stand" like in the other subtitle to keep it the same, as you said.
I don't know where "glance" came from rsrs! So I corrected this as well.
Thanks for pointing these out.
