the health of the ocean -

0:22 - 0:25or actively restoring
habitats and species. -
0:25 - 0:29Our aim is to get back
to intact, thriving marine ecosystems -
0:29 - 0:32in rude health
and at their full potential. -
0:33 - 0:35Rewilding not only secures a future

0:35 - 0:38for a whole host of marine species
and habitats, -
0:38 - 0:40but these new marine powerhouses of life
-
0:40 - 0:43can help us deliver
our climate change objectives, -
0:44 - 0:45healthy ecosystems,
-
0:45 - 0:48fix and store huge amounts of carbon.

0:49 - 0:53Left alone to thrive,
areas of rewilded sea -
0:53 - 0:56can provide benefits to fisheries
and the communities around them, -
0:56 - 1:00replenishing stocks and creating
nurseries for key species, -
1:00 - 1:03for all of us, for generations to come.

1:07 - 1:10Serious ambition is urgently needed,
and at scale. -
1:11 - 1:15We talk about saving nature,
but this is about nature saving us. -
1:16 - 1:19We can't go on simply undermining
the very fabric of the system -
1:19 - 1:21that ultimately supports us.

1:22 - 1:25We need to think big, and act now.
-
1:25 - 1:26We are now entering
-
1:26 - 1:30the United Nations decade
of ecosystem restoration. -
1:30 - 1:31This is our moment.
-
1:31 - 1:34It's time for us to rethink
how we do things. -
1:34 - 1:37Working together better
across governments, -
1:37 - 1:40industry, environmental bodies,
and academia. -
1:40 - 1:44Protecting our coasts
and supporting fisheries. -

1:48 - 1:51From oysteries to mangroves,
-
1:51 - 1:52from America to Africa and Asia,
-
1:53 - 1:56restoration successes
are happening all over. -
1:56 - 1:59Marine restoration really does work

1:59 - 2:01and we're getting better at it
all the time. -

2:03 - 2:06We've made a good start,
exciting things are happening, -
2:06 - 2:09and we've learned
that every sea and coast can benefit. -
2:09 - 2:14♪ (epic music) ♪

2:15 - 2:17Rewilding is seriously underfunded
-
2:17 - 2:20and not yet taken seriously in politics.
-
2:20 - 2:23It's an essential for everyone.
-
2:23 - 2:27We need the ocean thriving
and punching at its full power -
2:27 - 2:29if we are going to revert
planetary disaster. -
2:29 - 2:32Today, wild marine protected areas
-
2:32 - 2:35cover six per cent
of global ocean surface. -
2:35 - 2:39Fully protected areas
are less than one per cent. -
2:39 - 2:42Many of them have no adequate
enforcement at all. -
2:42 - 2:45We must overcome barriers to collaboration
-
2:45 - 2:48and provide some freedom to innovate,
-
2:48 - 2:52improving processes and regulations
to make rewilding possible. -
2:52 - 2:54The future of our vital ocean
-
2:54 - 2:57depends on what we do
in the next few years. -
2:57 - 3:00There is a huge potential
to achieve something amazing, -
3:00 - 3:03bringing the life back to oceans
as it used to be. -
3:03 - 3:05All of this is doable.
-
3:05 - 3:08We must just get together
and make it happen. -
3:08 - 3:10Let's all work together, in partnership,
-
3:10 - 3:12to restore the marine environment.
-
3:12 - 3:14This is a wonderful opportunity,
-
3:14 - 3:18for practitioners, regulators and funders
-
3:18 - 3:19to come together,
-
3:20 - 3:22to raise our collective ambition,
-

3:23 - 3:25and rewild the sea.
