Cow-Calf Corner: Calving Kit Preparation (1/21/17)

  • 0:03 - 0:05
    (upbeat music)
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    - As we approach this
    spring's calving season,
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    I think it's a good idea to
put together what I call a
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    calving kit.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    All the equipment that we're
going to need in the situation
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    where we first find that
first two year old heifer that
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    needs some help this spring.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    Part of that calving kit,
I think should be a calving
  • 0:30 - 0:35
protocol, a plan, if you will,
    for your family, neighbors,
  • 0:37 - 0:41
hired hands that might be around
that will be helping when a
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    particular cow or heifer
    needs some assistance.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
On that protocol, I think it's
    very, very important that we
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    have phone numbers for the
    large animal veterinarian in our
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    area, perhaps his cell phone
    number, numbers of relatives
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    and neighbors that might
    be willing to help us
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    during the calving season.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
As I put together my calving
kit, I'm going to start with a
  • 1:04 - 1:09
    plastic bucket, or perhaps
    even a stainless steel pail
  • 1:09 - 1:12
something that I can put all
    of these important pieces of
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    equipment in one spot.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
And I'm going to locate that
bucket in an area that everyone
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    in the family knows where
it is and can reach it.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
In the bucket, of course, we're
    going to put our obstetrical
  • 1:25 - 1:28
chains and I like to use chains
    rather than straps because
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    we can get those things
    clean and disinfected.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
And we want to do that in between
  • 1:34 - 1:36
each time that we use them.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    And of course, those
    chains need the handles.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
So make sure you've got those located
  • 1:40 - 1:42
and have them in your calving kit.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    Obstetrical sleeves, plastic
    disposable sleeves are very,
  • 1:48 - 1:53
very handy so that you can get
try to keep yourself as well
  • 1:53 - 1:55
as the cow from getting infected.
  • 1:55 - 2:00
Making sure that as you use
    these things each time when
  • 2:00 - 2:02
you're held In a cow or
    heifer that you replenish that
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    supply.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    So that they're you're ready
the next time is very, very
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    important.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
Have a bottle of the tincture of iodine.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
This is what's going to be
necessary to dip the navel of
  • 2:14 - 2:19
    that maybe calf and spread
around the the navel area so that
  • 2:19 - 2:24
he has a less likely chance
    of getting an infection
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    due to that naval opening.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
    A lubricant is always important
    whenever you're working with
  • 2:30 - 2:34
a cow or a heifer in the case
    of delivering the calf, right.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    So same situation with
    artificial insemination or preg
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    Checking.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    You can buy commercial
    lubricants, but quite frankly one
  • 2:41 - 2:45
that works just as well as
    a non detergent dish soap.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
You can buy these at any of
    the local grocery stores.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
That bottle cost me less than
$2 and will go a long way
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    towards getting through this
    calving season as a lubricant.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    It'll really work well.
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    And of course, you probably
    want to including several old
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    towels bath towels that have
already been used up around the
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    house.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    And if your spouse doesn't
    like that particular idea, go
  • 3:09 - 3:13
ahead and get a roll of paper
towels and stick in so that
  • 3:13 - 3:17
you can clean that area around
the back end of the cow or
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    the heifer before you start
    to do the examination,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    reduce the likelihood of
    introducing some pathogens
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    into her reproductive tract.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    Some simple things that you
probably want to also keep in
  • 3:31 - 3:35
mind is to have a flashlight
    included in your calving kit.
  • 3:35 - 3:39
A good one, one that you can
find that cow or heifer out in
  • 3:39 - 3:42
a lot that's down in the throws of labor.
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    And can because you're probably
going to do quite a little
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    bit of this at night.
  • 3:47 - 3:51
    And of course, spare batteries
    are very, very important
  • 3:51 - 3:54
because you don't want to go
out there at 2am and find out
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    that the batteries are getting
weak and you have to go back
  • 3:57 - 4:00
to the house to try to locate
some new batteries in order to
  • 4:00 - 4:03
go and search for that cow or
    heifer that need your help.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
Last on our list is something
that one of the popular press
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    magazines last year, called
one of the six most important
  • 4:13 - 4:16
items to include in our calving kit
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    for ranchers all across America.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    And that was a publication
    that we wrote here at
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    Oklahoma State University called
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    "Calving Time Management
    for Beef Cows and Heifers",
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    and everyone in your
    operation should review it
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    before the calving season begins.
  • 4:31 - 4:36
I think if you'll do that, you
    can help improve the chances
  • 4:36 - 4:40
    of saving more calves this
    spring and helping that bottom
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    line as we take those
    valuable calves to town
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    the following fall.
  • 4:44 - 4:49
You can go to the Sun Up website
    that's sunup.okstate.edu,
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    look under show links, and
you'll find the link to download
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    this very important document.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
Well, I hope this gives you
some idea of what I might
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    include in a calving kit.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    And that way that you'll
    be ready for this upcoming
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    calving season.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    (upbeat music)
