What is ISO? - Video Production Training

  • 0:00 - 0:03
In this video and be telling you
everything you need to know about.
  • 0:03 - 0:07
ISO. What it is, what it ain't,
    and why it's so important.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    It's coming up.
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    Hey, everyone.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
Steve here from learn online video.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    And today we're talking ISO.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
This is going to be a crash course in ISO, so
if you're new to camera operation.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
By the time you finish this video,
you will have a really good
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    understanding of what ISO is.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
So what is is so well, in a nutshell,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
it is your camera's sensitivity to light.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
The higher the ISO, the more light
    you let into your camera.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
The lower the ISO, the less light
    you let into your camera.
  • 0:43 - 0:48
The higher the ISO, the brighter
the image, the lower the ISO, the darker the image.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
So if you're shooting some very bright
light outside on a sunny day,
  • 0:52 - 0:56
then you won't need to let as much light
    into your camera.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    So choose a lower ISO.
  • 0:58 - 1:03
    But if you're shooting somewhere
dark, like inside or outside at night,
  • 1:03 - 1:06
then you will need to let more light
    into your camera.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    So choose a higher ISO.
  • 1:09 - 1:14
Now, as a general rule, you want to keep
your ISO as low as possible.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
And this is really, really important
    because the higher the ISO,
  • 1:19 - 1:23
the more grain you will add to your image
    or digital noise
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    or in layman's terms,
the worse your image will look.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
Here are some video shot at one.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    It's a nice, clean, crisp.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
And here is some video shot at 5000 ISO
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    horrible, grainy and awful.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
Not the look we're going for.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
Now, these two videos were opposite
    ends of the scale,
  • 1:45 - 1:49
but hopefully that will give you a good
    understanding of how increasing your
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    ISO too much
can affect the quality of your image.
  • 1:53 - 1:57
So in an ideal world, you will only ever
shoot at 100 or 200 ISO.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
This will guarantee a nice, clean,
    crisp image,
  • 2:00 - 2:03
but it won't always be possible
    due to lack of light.
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    Now, in order
  • 2:04 - 2:08
to be able to control your air
so you will need to shoot in manual mode.
  • 2:08 - 2:13
If you're shooting in auto mode,
then your camera will decide the ISO for
  • 2:13 - 2:16
you, which, if you're just starting out,
may not be such a bad idea.
  • 2:16 - 2:20
    But I strongly encourage you
to start shooting in manual mode.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
You want to be in control of your camera,
    not the other way around.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    So we're really just scratching
the surface of video fundamentals here.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
